  • *Camera tested on 1.53* Update: It actually seems that the 10 is using a discrete DAC. See here. www.androidcent... HTC created an awesome phone! I was skeptical at first but it has proven itself to be one of the best phones released this year! HTC is BACK! I created this review quickly, so any other questions you have I will have to answer in other videos.

      +Erica Griffin The pink tint has to do with the glue used on the screen, it fades with time. If you got the time, you can read about it on XDA, some users have reported it to be almost completely gone after a week of use

      +Erica Griffin Two questions; don't u like a 15'' screen better!! if it was just as light? and maybe u can do a review on a 'real' ultra-book hackintosh for video editing; i recommend the dell XPS because it has a full gaming-laptop class CPU and glass track-pad........ or a hackintosh version of the razor like u mentioned.

    The "equalisation settings" actually control how the speaker works: theatre mode -> stereo speakers, music mode -> mono low-high separation.

  • @scootosan
    @scootosan 8 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    I had the M7 and from what I saw in the M8 and M9 there was no need or desire to upgrade. I am glad they did NOT go with a finger print button o the back (what about using it with a protective case(?). The Speakers were an issue with me as to the rumor of losing the duel fronts. But I am ok with this set up and you should check the custom set up for Headphones/Ear buds too. And I am fine with not having Inductive Charging, removable Battery and extreme water resistance. This camera is a big improvement over the predecessors thankfully. I can live with this device for the next 3+ years easily.

      +PhantomAct no you should like I go for good camera and great display on Samsungs phone and end up with everything else like shit.
      lags everywhere, hideous UI, disasterous build quality, always on service, display go brighter and dimmer by it's own(not on autobrightness, but obviously he thinks he is :D ), latest get software updates, terrible sound....
      worse call quality on flagship I have ever expirienced....
      when I think of Samsungs phones they are nothing but good camera phone with great display so you can watch that photos, for everything else is just pure crap.
      Hmm why I didn't buy some Canon Dslr or something like that I wonder?

    • @mladenradinovic2290
      @mladenradinovic2290 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +PhantomAct from day one, every, but EVERY caller complained that I sound like I call from speaker or like from the barrel, Phone was 3 times on repair, they said it's normal to be like that :D
      I suspect that I will buy Samsungs shit phone soon.
      Call problem was big problem for me on S6, but on S5 and S4 where all the other problems to.
      I think that Samsung just can't make good PHONE, Tv,Camera or something like that maybe, but Smartphone don't!!!
      Ironic is that Samsung is my favorite brand in Home electric merchandise.
      Phones are just shit

      I'm from Croatia, using only flagship phones from Iphone, Samsung and Htc-s.
      After Iphone 4, I didn't return back because Apple is falling behind, but in Android world HTC is far mor superior as complete phone in every way exept for the camera and display department.
      That's where Samsung is in my opinion the best, and in marketing ofcourse :D

    • @100subsnovideos9
      @100subsnovideos9 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mladen Radinovic you're not making any sense because the S7 Edge kills it in battery life as well, so that checks display, camera, and battery performance, so that only leave software which I know it excels in. You're of the minority who says it isn't so

    Great indepth review!!
    About the stereo or not speakers. It seems like they are stereo, but that they both have different frequency ranges. The left has probably removed low frequencies and the right probably can't emit high frequencies. But there's enough overlap to have a centered feel to it, but probably somehow feels muffled on the right, like you said. That's the only explanation I can think of.

    I can't wait to see your in depth review of the G5!

  • @cynvision
    @cynvision 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks for a review showing this phone was not a terrible choice. I had a budget constraint and wondered a long time when I picked it as the lesser evil replacing my G4. It has been working as you describe and I regret not seeing this review earlier this year. Maybe it's a bit late for HTC 10 but the descendants of this design might have these issues I've experienced using the phone. It hasn't been a "bad" phone; you just have to be ready for "different." And to the point that I went from USB micro accessories(LG's choice in 2014) to USB C (HTC's choice in 2016) which necessitated a extra hidden cost to my phone replacement. And add to that inconvenience that big box stores will not carry accessories for a Verizon brand phone and you start to get more education in how the cell phone industry works. It wasn't quite the issue with the LG at the height of the G4 introduction, but HTC is another matter. This is the red-headed stepchild of phones. I might budget in the future to be able to afford something less locked down by a cell service provider. But live and learn. My next buy might be in the Samsung series popular when that day comes for the pure enjoyment of being able to buy a screen protector at the corner store.
    One thing not mentioned was HTC's quirkyness about the LED indicator. Going from G4 to HTC 10 you lose a multi-colored, pulse-capable LED. I got used to that on the G4 for hints of what message was coming in. It worked rather well for a quick view of whether to actually turn on the phone but I couldn't risk the same motherboard death of a LG a second time, so no G5 for me. The red green LED on the HTC 10 was a let down that I would only have understood if I was not in a panic to replace my dearly enjoyed and totally dead by defect G4. The duo color is pretty useless to me, seemed a pain to work around with software, and being on steady while charging left me less than thrilled in trying to darken my bedroom at night. I quickly snipped some electrical tape over it and done without. Now, you did not go into the glass specs on this phone. Others did and I think it's another got-ya to be prepared for when switching to HTC. I dropped this phone from waist height on cobbles without an aftermarket screen protector the first week and got myself a long scratch on the glass. Oh boy, did that mishap sell me on screen protectors. Too bad the Verizon dealer was out of protectors the day I was sold the phone at the 2018 phase-out price. I thought after my two year stint with a G4 with a pristine glass protector I'd be safe with what was supposed to be 7 on the Mohs scale glass, but no. Phones seem like toast, landing jelly-side (glass) down. Walmart entry cobblestone scratched up the replacement for the dead G4. And maybe I have the "chunky" case to thank for getting away without a broken screen. But it has had me wondering if they're truthful about the glass specs.
    The resulting dent in the case has not dislodged the USB receptacle (yet) (another widespread fault of the G4 I had avoided) and a lot of baby-care helped the phone survive working as an outdoor plant merchandiser. But not without a few other rainy days worrying about keeping it dry and grit away from the screen. Wifi strength was about as good as the G4. But a few wifi dead spots plagued me at some stores when using it as my price scanning hand-held for the job. It has some kinds of lag that frustrated me from my transition away from the G4 and only after half a year I don't cuss at the phone for being the way it is because of how HTC chooses to implement Android's features. One of them being the constant GPS location ping while taking pictures. Not a fan of going around my patio taking pictures and having it query the location over and over with an audio alert of location updating.
    The other concern with the phone is this phone gets stupidly warm when on a call and charging. (Which your review pointed to when gaming.) But unfortunately you cannot really test this in a phone store. I had noticed the warmth when charging when I got the phone home and know to charge it uncovered for this reason. Late this summer I was on a call and charging it in my car and it got hot to the rate that I didn't like my ear up on it while on the call. To the rate only the G4 achieved when taking video outdoors. With only a thin plastic back case in place. I begin to think the metal has a heat sink purpose to being used by HTC on this big battery phone. It hasn't yet shut off during a call but how warm it gets has me wondering if it someday will. Maybe that's the direction things are going; no one actually makes a long call on a phone. But us who do may have to keep an eye on the HTC 10 for being a bit too toasty. For sure I'm going to ventilate it out of my bag when I go answering other calls on a Bluetooth earbud.

    Hi, Erica. The lens flare you mentioned at 20:44 is actually due to smudges on the lens, that causes light to refract that way. This tends to happen on pretty much every camera. If you wipe the lens clean and try it again you won't see those light streaks.

    Just some clarification, it's actually a custom DAC made by HTC according to androidcentral. They contacted HTC directly and asked them! Nice Video though! We bother you because you're one of the best!

  • @EricaGriffin
    @EricaGriffin  8 ปีที่แล้ว +35

    ***Hey Guys, Android Central has shed some light on the DAC situation: **www.androidcentral.com/htc-10-audio-testing-boomsound-evolved**. I have looked all over the interwebs and everything has pointed to the 10 having the s820 DAC. It seems that it is actually a discrete one "We use a discrete DAC (not one on the SoC) in addition to the amp and have done a ton of PCB engineering to insure the best possible signal-to-noise ratio. Credit to HTC engineering, not off-the-shelf components."***

    • @burso83
      @burso83 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Flo Shaban there is a catch to it tho, which no one mentioned in their reviews. In order to be able to format an SD Card as internal storage you need an UHS Speed Class 3 SD card according to the phone. That means if you want to go big (128GB) you'll be looking at cards priced between £100-£200 depending on the transfer speed

    Thanks for the in-depth, honest review. Having been steadfast HTC since HTC One S, it's great to see them continually improve and experiment. Sad to hear the device still suffers from heat issues (PvZ2 turns my phone into a nice hand warmer). And I'm both excited and reserved to hear the new speakers perform.
    Your side-by-side comparisons of the cameras give me a lot to think about when deciding between this and the S7 Edge; first time I've considered Samsung as a real contender. Since I take plenty of videos and pictures of my daughter and family with the phone, I may need to deal with the Samsung TouchWiz weirdness.
    Speaking of launchers: can you do a review of launchers? What are your thoughts on the Google Now Launcher? It's evolved to a point where it's now a viable substitute for Sense, and I've been using it to great effect. Perhaps replacing TouchWiz with Google Now Launcher will be the solution.

This is going to be my phone when I upgrade next month and I can't wait to get my hands on it! I think it would be interesting to see how the camera compares to the Iphone 6S or LG G5, as we all know the S7 is generally assumed to be the best, but how does it compare to the rest?

      +Aaron Crawford I have had all HTC phone since the EVO when we went from the M7 to the 8 we loved it and than we went to the M9 and weren't too happy and hated the camera. Wasn't worth the upgrade. I have always had HTC and love Android and knew Samsung was great also and we decided to change and we got the S7 Edge cause of the bigger battery and screen. We love it and the camera is the best even the front for selfies. I still love HTC and hope this phone does well. But I love the S7 Edge and the features and gestures it does. I use S Health and not my fitbit anymore. But I am still reading reviews and hoping I made the right decision. And I think I did.

I like HTC still and I have a Nexus 9 tablet. I hope this brings HTC back. Only downside to my 7 Edge is the sound sometimes but it's ok everything else is great about the phone. I hope those with the HTC 10 enjoy it. To me it's Android and not an Iphone so their both good HTC and Samsung.

Whenever I try to type on phones with on-screen keys, I find myself accidentally hitting the home button instead of the space key on a fairly regular basis. Superb video review. Can't say I agree with you on the S7 being the best front facing camera for video, unless you really are that yellow! HTC have delivered a really great phone this year.

    • @EricaGriffin
      @EricaGriffin  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh no it certainly doesn't win overall, I was talking about OIS. The HTC got the white balance correct. I prefer the HTC cameras in many ways! They have ways to go for improvement but I think they can do it! It rate it one of my favorite smartphone cameras!

      +Erica Griffin I have both the s7 edge and HTC 10, and I think the HTC nailed the front camera, hands down. For the back camera, the s7 doesn't have problems focusing.

    • @mattxdillon
      @mattxdillon 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Any suggestions for a name camera wise I prefer the s7. It's quicker to open up, and takes faster shots with better focus. I'm sure if you messed with pro mode on the HTC, you can replicate some S7 shots. It's just harder to get them initially sometimes. The HTC is the first phone I've ever had that took bad pictures in ideal conditions. Even after the update. Phone wise, I got the HTC because I like the design and HTC sense over the glass back of the s7 and TouchWiz. Everything else on the HTC seems more than capable of matching the s7 in benchmarks. One thing I would consider is the amount of bugs out of the box with HTC so far... My WiFi isn't working right, as well as many others.

    HTC 10 is amazing! and one of the best things about HTC is their simple Android format. no added in settings like Samsung and apple. you don't have to search the whole phone to find the simplest setting. not to mention the camera and speed are amazing too!

    10 is great but since I used both HTC 10 an S7 Edge (exynos), it's clear that the S7 is more refined and allround. Better screen, camera and battery life compared to the 10.
    The 10's only advantage is the loudspeaker and internal AMP, and thats it in my opinion. 24bits DAC is nice but for who. Most won't hear the difference unless you play lossless audio. Real audiophiles are using external and better DAC's. But it's a nice feature.
    Okay, less bloat is also nice from HTC but I also like touchwiz features like multi window or customizable quick toggles for instance.
    Only reason I can think off is when you don't want a Galaxy or when you are a HTC fan like my brother 😀

    • @ChanTheNoob
      @ChanTheNoob 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Garret141076 The build quality and software are the main reasons I got the 10. I just can't stand the glass construction and (subjectively) ugly skin of the S7. I'm also not a huge fan of AMOLED, since every AMOLED device I've owned has burned in pretty badly. To be honest, this year's flagships are pretty neck and neck. Most of the advantages between them are pretty subjective.

    Thank you Erica for another great review, really having a hard time deciding between this phone, and the Galaxy s7.
    I really dislike software navigation bar, and try to avoid it on any new phone I buy so that's why these are my two main contenders, but others are welcomed.
    I sold my iPhone 6s Plus and really liked going back to iOS, but it just didn't cute my needs, such as adding music on the fly.

  • @MatthewMoscotto
    @MatthewMoscotto 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    The 10 and the S7 are the best flagships of the year so far. The LG G5 is a flawed beast. Also.. the 10s performance is so fast and fluid that it makes the S7 look laggy. Great 72 hour review Erica and let us know how the phone runs when you download the new OTA that was released. I believe it's software version 1.53 that was released.

    These HTC phones are know in the past for camera issues relating to the Zoe features always running causing burn in on the camera from overheating. If disabled in time it can save the lens module but if not it has to be replaced. I've seem some comments similar on all of the previous models. Wonder if this one will suffer the same.

    it's weird that you think that HTC M9 speaker is better than the HTC 10 since Juan Bagnell from Pocketnow did a video comparing the two and letting us vote for which phone sounds better and HTC 10 won with a landslide.
    For me HTC M9 was a bit louder but overall the HTC 10 sounded better.

      +Aaqib Bora I own both and I will say the M9 used to sound better but over time, it's gotten much quieter and more distortion prone. The 10 is excellent at the moment, but I have a feeling a similar thing will happen.
      And before you say it, yes I've made sure there's no dust in the speaker holes.

    • @batistajericho4281
      @batistajericho4281 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Aaqib Bora I have watched several reviews. if you just watch the Pocketnow video by Juan Bagnell namned ''Pocketnow Poll: Best Boomsound? HTC 10 or One M9?'' listen to both the HTC 10 and HTC M9 sound samples then you can make your own judgement.

    what I think would have been cool is if they left the on screen buttons. I like to customize them anyway, and maybe integrated the fingerprint reader onto the unlock button kinda like the z5. leaving room for the classic stereo boom sound. I'm a little nervous about this new setup. but I am going to give it a try.

    Firstly, I'm on the fence about upgrading from the One M9. I don't like the thought of upgrading after just a year, but the battery and camera on the M9 have me a little uncomfortable. Obviously the DAC is a huge improvement, but are the camera and battery improved enough to warrant an upgrade?

    That is odd (about the speakers). I too would've guessed that it would be mono just with a high pass crossover on the earpiece unit and a low pass on the bottom one. Interesting.
    Does it sound legitimately nice and full for music listening when positioned in a corner of a desk against a wall (for best audio reflection)?

    Hey +Erica Griffin not sure if you read my post in a previous upload but for some reason I can't view any of your videos higher than 480p. Is that the quality that you're uploading now? Or is something up with the TH-cam app for Android because it seems to only be happening with your channel and older videos of yours that I was able to view at 1080p now only show me 480p as an option.

    The sound is optimised for headphones. Americans don't get the great HTC headphones with the package so seem to be oblivious to the fact that a small decrease in volume because of the front speaker setup as compared to previous versions of HTC is no big deal. Get some decent headphones then comment. You will be amazed.

    The HTC 10 is a really nice phone but I feel like it costs $200 more than it should be. Especially with competitors like the ZTE Axon 7 and One Plus 3. HTC doesn't really have the name to charge Samsung or Apple prices for a phone like this.
