This is such a great video! I so agree with your point that YA often tries to be a genre it is not. For example, Six of Crows is a great book, but like hell it is about teenagers and or for teenagers. And lots of YA is just thinly veiled erotica, and no shade on it, but kids as young as 13 can pick up them basiced on the pretty cover, and idk they are a bit too young for it, yakno? The Worst Witch tho!! I never read the books (they were never translated into my language) but I watched a TV adaptation in early 00s and loved it! Absolutely amazing series with wonderful stories. And I also really agree with your frustration about reviews. Why would people write it was a great kids book and then give it 3 stars? Because it didn't cater to them? Well it sure would cater to a 10 years old child and they'd give it a million stars if they could.
this!!! i understand wanting to log every book you read on goodreads, but if the book is not made for you and you didn’t enjoy it, there’s no reason to leave a subpar rating just because you were not the target audience. when i read middle grade books for nostalgia’s sake, i neglect to rate them unless i truly love the book to this day (often this occurs with the slightly more mature books, like percy jackson or neil gaiman’s graveyard boy), and i think that should be the standard. i feel like the largest issue with goodreads’ rating system is that many people neglect to acknowledge the intended audience of what they read. great video! 💞
That was a good insight. Not just regarding books but a lot of reviews in general whether it's for stores or restaurants are not always based on what matters to that specific thing per se which doesn't always make a review or the rating applicable but still impacts the overall rating of that place. With this specifically, it is odd the things people took points off for. At the end of the day, 3.9 stars or 4 stars ain't bad but without those, it could've probably been closer to 4.5 stars.
Yess, is like if i went and read "five children and it " as an adult and leave a bad review. I loved that book as a child because IT WAS FOR CHILDREN. So it would be unfair to rate it as an adult.
I think i understand your point but part of what makes great reviews is people explaining their reasoning, it would be worse if they just put a 3 star review no comment. I also believe when it comes to buying books for kids, if a parent knows what Goodread is, it will understand that what makes a great 5 to 6 books isn't the same as a good book for all audiences and would look up additional resources. Goodreads might need a difference between professional and user review like metacritic or maybe an age bracket recommendations, that will also help recognize review bombing. Your comment of young adults wanting to adults felt so on brand that it was amazing, your point even if I disagree are very important and would like to watch more of your content ❤.
People have wildly inconsistent standards for how they rate things and it bugs the crap out of me too 😂
