Good stuff. Talking more about “music theory” of alt rock seems super useful. Almost anyone who likes this music and likes guitars is probably trying to write their own songs. As an example, people always chat about sonic youth as if all they did was make noise. But there is a very clear set of scales and chords they relied on.
Yeah definitely. From my own experience I know enough that I know what chords are in a key and different ways to play them etc but then I find when putting things together I’m always drawn to certain voicings and progressions subconsciously which makes it sound like ‘me’. I’d think maybe it’s the same for other bands?!
Damn this is a very high quality content man. Straight to the point, without unnecessary stuff in-between, good examples, easy, clean, useful. Subscribed right away! Keep it up dude!!!
Thank you for show these progressions, as a 51 year old metal head and one who love every track off Siamese dreams. Mayonnaise has always had a hold on me and one of my favs as well!
Technically progressions should work, regardless of where you start, as long as you stay in key. For a major key, regardless of what you start with, the pattern is WWWHWWH I ii iii IV V iv VII Eg C Dm Em F G Am B But if you're not sure how to read your fretboard, then this pattern works: WWWHWWH W = whole note = skip a fret H = half note = next fret If you move down a string (up to D string) its always going down a four (eg I to IV) With that, as long as you know your barre chords, you're good to go
There was a band years ago called Plagal Grind, which is where I first heard of the I - IV interval, but essentially knew it as the Velvets / Lou Reed, Spacemen 3, Spiritualized et al. The last one sounds like Beach House, with that slight melancholy. EDIT fav chords at the moment: Hotline TNT "Stampede". Catchy, intriguing, disconcerting. And 3 guitarists.
@@thesethingsmakenoisesgrab some poppy chord changes from David Bennett piano. You start getting the groove over the pattern, but then he'll throw the next song up. You do a slower take on the chords and your accent is easier to catch...forgive, I speak Americanese.

Oh sh*t, I just realize that I've heard October Drift even before I found your channel! I saw an Instagram ad, or something... From recording of an album. Cool!
@@thesethingsmakenoises Yes, I like what you do. It's not retro music, it's not just heavy-ish grunge, the music is pretty melodic too and the songs as compositions are pretty darn good!
Great video but I think it's worth mentioning that Mayonaise isn't a V iii I but a I vi IV. The Eb chord is the tonal center, and the minor chord in the middle of the progression is a minadd9 chord, which you wouldn't usually expect from a iii chord in your typical major scale. The use of b7 (Db) over the Eb chord I'm pretty sure is just some mixolydian modal mixture, not necessarily implying that it's supposed to literally be a dominant 7th chord, which is what you'd expect of the V.
That jag sounds so good with the p90s - is it a refinished blacktop? I've been thinking about picking up one of the new player ii's and fitting it with jag sized p90s
Jesus Dude, your chords are so fracking hard. CRAMP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. I have arthritis, so i struggle with complex chords and the 'press' and 'slide'/'switch' interchange (if that makes sense). but cool vid dude

Hey, thanks for the video, but I've got one question (which might be an obvious one, but...) - how do you find chords that sound good together? Like, you pick some chord for "I" and then some other for "V", what is the logic here? Also, why is some chord - chord V and not I? Thanks :)
The funny thing is, recently I started working on a song that has the Mayonnaise chord progression. It felt too close, so I went V-iii-IV in the verse.. I'm not done with that composition...
@@thesethingsmakenoises I will! It will take some time to finish and I'll possibly post it on TH-cam. I've got a good fuzz sound made with distortion pedals, but as we all know, cool guitar tones don't make good songs haha!
It’s a Chinese modern player. I really love it. I use the same 11-48 that I use on my jazzmaster, I’ve actually got a video coming up about gauges next week!
Play a chord and change the 3rd or 5th or even both or just the root with 3rd and 5th in tact. Very ergonomical 😂 This is how I sorta learned to play keys...I confess I am a synthesizer nerd. Speaking of overdrive pedals...have you heard the Ibanez 850? Sounds like a fuzz.
It’s weird. I use most things f those chord progressions just from fooling around on the neck. Your ears just tell you where to go. Just ordered a super weirdo from JPTR. How does the wallow compare to the ehx op amp?
Yeah I’m the same now actually I sometimes have to deliberately get away from it haha. Ooooo awesome!!! Yeah I love the op amp, I’ve actually swapped it out for the Warlow now though! I find the rat channel combined with the muff channel gives me even more mids
