Correct. The safeties that have been put into place by Audi on the stock ECU are not enough to save the engine when things go wrong on a tuned engine. This is why we inject additional custom code onto the stock ECU for more safeties. We prefer this approach as we are looking for long term reliable solutions opposed to dulling the knock sensors to make power which is common practice on this platform.

The CEPA/CZGB engines are using an iron block, the material of the block is nothing to do with the strength of the engine, unless you are at a power level where you are cracking the cylinder walls (1200-1500hp) it is not the reason behind majority of the engine failures on this platform. The aluminium block engines are actually better for high horsepower applications as they have 6 bolt mains for crank support, which the iron block engine does not. The turbochargers are different and the facelift turbochargers are capable of a lot more power and spool way faster than the older engine/turbos ever could. This is one of the reason why we are seeing a lot more failures. With the old engine, you could get away with a lot as it didn’t make enough power on stock turbos in the first place and the spool was slower. So everyone could get away with poor tuning as the setup was a lot more forgiving. With the facelift engines, margin for error is extremely low which is why safeguards had to be put in place to monitor the engine management system constantly and notify the driver.
How much is a stage 1 engine rebuild please I’m looking to buy a stage 2 ttrs and now I’m worried what happens if it fails. The car has been tuned by wrench studios so I would presume they know what there doing it terms of protecting the engine.
Pre facelift engines don't make anywhere near as as much power in stock form as the facelift engines, the material of the block is not relevant at these power levels. The material of the block only becomes a weakness when you re over 1200hp.
So, if i am understanding you correctly do many ECU remaps do away with the stock engines management ability to put the vehicle into "limp mode" upon detection of misfires, fuel issues etc ??
It is worse on the DNWA engine. Is is even more sensitive to knock than the DAZA engine, combined with poor tuning as all the copycat tuners are applying DAZA ignition, fueling and boost settings onto the DNWA when it can’t take it as it is using a different exhaust camshaft.
They are not as powerful and have a pretty good knock control system from factory, so they get away with poor tuning and poor maintenance which is why we don’t see as many failures. 500hp is the reliable safe limit for that engine from our experience. When hybrid turbos are fitted to that engine it also delays the spool which makes it easier on the engine!

I have a 2019 RS3 with 50k miles I just bought. I have been wanting this car for a very very long time. I just purchased the car 3 days ago and had it checked out by a performance shop that checked everything including compression which was good. All they said was there was a very little bit of oil on the spark plugs and a small oil leak in the back but nothing major. So I bought it. It is an IMS710hs RS3 with a UNI ECU /TCU non built motor tune currently on E85. It runs great! loud and fun, I don't push it too hard. I did however just watch your video. Especially just now purchasing this and I am not made of money. I wanted to ask how I can keep this car running and safe? What do I need to do for someone not just made of money? I want to have this car running strong for a long time. How can I protect the engine. I am in Miami, so I can't obviously come to you guys. Thanks so much for your time
Very ballsy. Any e85 tuned rs3 even on stock turbo are damn near the limits on stock motor. Everytime you do a pull roll into it and don’t go WOT until 3500-4000 rpm’s but I definitely recommend building that motor up with that bigger turbo.
How much for ECU/TCU tune Stage2 or 3? Are you able to remote tune/street tune? I live in the USA. The only fuels I have available are 91acn which is the minimum fuel I can run. As well as E85 year round. How would multi-map run on my RS3? Would we tune for 91acn,E30,E60??? In 2 more months my RS3 will be rebuilt. I’m building Stage1 motor build similar to what your shop offers. Seeing that you know what your doing with these engines. I’m seriously considering switching to Gt-flasher. Lmk. Thank You.
In the nicest possible way that was not a nice watch😢As the owner of a 2021 TTRS running full stage 2 set up it’s deeply worrying. Had 2 stage 2 RS3’s previous to TTRS but zero issues spread over 4 years of ownership 🙏🏻
Understandable, nobody cares about something like this until it happens to them and it is happening. Every single day. These three cars were tuned by the same company, some ran for a few months some ran for 2 years. The calibrations are not directly to blame but it is the dynamic environments that the cars are in.

Thank you very much for the kind words, they are still reliable, in stock form 😁 we are now reaching a time where turbos are far too capable in stock form and they can easily exceed the strength limitations of the engine itself!
Turbo technology has come a long long way, these faster spooling setups are risky business! I bet if this engine was using a turbo that had a slower spool we wouldn’t see half the issues we are seeing with them at the moment due to bad tuning.
Great diagnosis skills, intelligence and logic built up from experience! Clearly explained with examples too. I would take my car here given the depth of knowledge this guy shows. Really good to see.
What kind of safeguards do you have for injector failures? Are your safeguards any different than the unitronic software safeguards? Keep up the good work with the videos!
We have never lost an engine going lean in our 4 years of tuning them. Our engine safeties pick up failing injectors months before they actually fail and melt a piston.
@@InfinitPerformance that’s amazing. How does the software alert you of an issue with an injector or coil pack for instance? I’m contemplating switching over to your software.
@@davidrojas9633 we have had safety algorithms in place for 3 years now and we have not had a single engine failure since. When an injector, coil pack or spark plug is getting weak it notifies the driver by flashing the EML as the engine starts making heavy knock corrections. It also simultaneously switches you back to a safe map to protect the engine and will not let you switch out until you have the issue addressed. This is why we are able to offer 3 year warranties on every engine we build. We are also looking into offering warranties with our tunes on stock engines for the 8Y platform.
What about if it logs misfires in 3 cylinders during the high idle cold start but when the revs come back down it runs smooth. New plugs, coil packs, good compression, a bit off with the leakdown

Thanks for the great info. You have a new subscriber 👍 Worked on a few RS3’s myself and always tell customers not to go for the cheapest tunes they can find. Can’t understand how you can spend so much money on a car and skimp in the tune / supporting mods. Ones I worked on had: •Unitronic stage 1 / 2 ECU map - 93 octane. Was on the 95 octane map if they were running ethanol (Paired with a P3 gauge to monitor) •Unitronic TCU map •Unitronic carbon intake and elbow •Unitronic Intercooler • Downpipe with decat Paired with Motul 8100 X-Clean+ oil and OEM filter Not saying Unitronic is the best / only go with them etc. Just delt with them and they have “safe tunes” Not dyno happy tuners chasing numbers with huge torque spikes. Hell, my girlfriend has a RSQ3 and that’s staying stock while it still has warranty 😂
Thank you for the kind words! As I said, maintenance is key. If you are choosing to tune your engine you are responsible to stay ontop of it. If you don’t have our safeties, over service your car. Datalog it regularly. Service intervals should be halved. If you are running E85, I would advise injector servicing every 20k miles. E85 is tough on injectors.
Another thing that is also happening in the uk is engine failure due to cars fitted with mileage tampering devices, oil quality degrading far past its lifespan and causing a condition known as LSPI.
Well this definitely makes me anxious about my rs3 😂 already replaced the failed transfer box at 43k miles… and I haven’t even mapped it yet! 😢 really helpful info. Might have to pay you a visit soon 😇
Remember, maintenance is key. That transfer box is a sealed for life unit on RS3’s up till 2020. But on the RS3 8Y and RSQ3 2020+ which use the same transfer boxes they are a service every 20k item.
Great video and very informative. I have a 2018 TTRS which is stock but looking at tuning but I track my car every month. Is it possible your safety features would work even though I am tracking the car regularly? Thanks 👍🙏
Is this only true of tuned RS 2.5TFSI engines? Are standard / stock engines reliable? or is this all RS 2.5 TFSI engines which will have issues? Thanks
There is a reply to this question earlier on in the comments section bro. Just keep on top of your maintenance and you should be fine on a stock engine.
Quick one regarding your comment that it’s not torque bending these rods bud, are you saying it’s ignition timing ? Or more particularly too much advance ? Would 1.8/1.9 bar at 2800rpm be safe as long as you don’t have too much advance ?
Over 1.5bar is not safe at that low of an rpm. Look into something called LSPI too. When these engines knock, peak cylinder pressure goes through the roof and that’s what bends rods. The stock turbocharger on this engine is an animal, it can build a lot of boost very quickly, 2500-3500rpm is a danger zone where boost should not be over 1.5/1.6bar. We often see 2.1 bar from other tuners in this RPM zone. Everyone thinks it’s okay to ramp in the boost as fast as possible but it is just not safe. The stock knock control systems on tuned cars are simply not enough to save this engine when things are not running optimally. This is why we commissioned our safety algorithms.
@@InfinitPerformanceif both well maintained which one from your experience you think is better…I mean which can handle more power if it’s getting tuned by someone like you???
@@spurouuu5713the B58 is way more of a solid engine compared to the the daza especially when you start tuning them both. The RS3 is just a ticking bomb.
probably, and timing. most EU/UK tuners map these on good fuel and run quite a lot of timing down low and also numb the knock sensors by 15-20% >. So when you have a bad batch of fuel, pop goes the engine.
@@VuBeClanI datalogged the software on every engine that failed over the last 4 years, usually it is a boost spike particularly at 2500/3500rpm or running 18/19 degrees of ignition up-top on 99 octane fuel with the knock sensors muted, wastegate pinned and engine showing no knock corrections is what kills the engine.
@@InfinitPerformance I believe this has happened to me. My rs3 threw a rod on the higway, in a high gear going slowly. I had just filled up so it may have been slightly worse fuel than usual. The car was running a revo stage 2 tune
Brilliant use of tech/ idea, long term whos going to care about a few diagnostic sessions and minor parts replacement if it saves that large lump sum bill for an engine rebuild. Especially if you have the money to run an RS
Great video. Not an Audi, but I've got an M140i and after watching this video I can safely say I have no plans of ever mapping it. Seems a daft to risk when it can ruin your engine so easily. It's not like these cars fall out of christmas crackers is it. Also +340hp in a hatchback is already silly power for public roads when you think about it!
@@medicineman7461What do you think the limit is on this motor? While I don't drive an Audi with this engine management tech, I've own many 2nd and 3rd Gen 5cyl putting out upwards of 650hp and never had an engine failure.
Stage 1 map on these should be fine ( hate calling them stage but it's what most know) The main issue is intake temps more than anything so popping on a upgraded FMIC is a good shout also though stage 1 doesn't really require hardware mods. Also a TCU tune is a good idea so it's more inline with the uprated torque the engine is producing. But I think beyond that is when you could be pushing the engine and hardware more towards it's limits. I've seen people bolt on turbos and be fine running 600+BHP. So it also comes down to mechanical sympathy. Don't floor the car while it's still not warmed up fully and do regular oil changes and servicing. Audi seem to recommend oil changes every couple years but I rather do once within a year atleast. Depends on the miles done as if i did 7k miles then oil change.
Interesting watch , just shows that stock is enough for these motors anything more and they’re prone to some gremlins , I’m a B9.5 owner completely standard and performance is just perfect , if these owners want more then they need to look at alternatives
Cars are capable of producing more power, if done correctly. Many factors get neglected and don’t get taken into consideration when adjusting software, therefore causing failure.
The arms on the rocker valves. The needle bearings fail in them, we have rebuilt a few that have had this failure. Stay ontop of your oil servicing is the best advice I can give to prevent. Stick to 8k service intervals, strictly!

Pre facelift engines don't make anywhere near as as much power in stock form as the facelift engines, the material of the block is not relevant at these power levels. The material of the block only becomes a weakness when you re over 1200hp.
@@InfinitPerformancewhat are you on about there’s about 10bhp difference
So, if i am understanding you correctly do many ECU remaps do away with the stock engines management ability to put the vehicle into "limp mode" upon detection of misfires, fuel issues etc ??
Same issue for the opf aswell??
It is worse on the DNWA engine. Is is even more sensitive to knock than the DAZA engine, combined with poor tuning as all the copycat tuners are applying DAZA ignition, fueling and boost settings onto the DNWA when it can’t take it as it is using a different exhaust camshaft.

We don’t see anywhere near as many issues with the 1.8/2.0 MQB engines.
My rs3 is 2019 one, I removed opf
Can the rs3 handle a pop and bang map? Or the car pieces will break soon?
Does the s3/gti have these issues?

Lmk. Thank You.

Understandable, nobody cares about something like this until it happens to them and it is happening. Every single day.

Thanks for the great info. You have a new subscriber 👍
Worked on a few RS3’s myself and always tell customers not to go for the cheapest tunes they can find. Can’t understand how you can spend so much money on a car and skimp in the tune / supporting mods.
Ones I worked on had:
•Unitronic stage 1 / 2 ECU map - 93 octane. Was on the 95 octane map if they were running ethanol (Paired with a P3 gauge to monitor)
•Unitronic TCU map
•Unitronic carbon intake and elbow
•Unitronic Intercooler
• Downpipe with decat
Paired with Motul 8100 X-Clean+ oil and OEM filter
Not saying Unitronic is the best / only go with them etc.

Yes they would, if at any time the car is unhappy it will automatically switch to a safe map and flash the EML to notify you :)
If you keep ontop of maintenance you will not have any issues :)
Is this also dangerous for forged rods?
@Infinit Performance Have you ever thought to sell your safety tuning software to all this companies?
Their egos are too big to acknowledge or address the problem, denial works better
Do you guys have much experience with bmw b58 tuning ? And are there safties maped in like with the DAZA tuning?
The b58 engine is not as weak as a DAZA when things go wrong
@@InfinitPerformanceif both well maintained which one from your experience you think is better…I mean which can handle more power if it’s getting tuned by someone like you???
@@spurouuu5713the B58 is way more of a solid engine compared to the the daza especially when you start tuning them both. The RS3 is just a ticking bomb.
Really appreciate this rs3 specific knowledge, keep it coming!
More to come!
So is this likely high boost at low rpm "lugging" causing detonation? (For the 1st RS3)
probably, and timing. most EU/UK tuners map these on good fuel and run quite a lot of timing down low and also numb the knock sensors by 15-20% >.
So question is who is tuning these around Glasgow ??
These are not Scottish cars 😊 90% of our client base is English.
So basically the bolts backed out causing the rod to bend.
Have never seen the bolts back out on these engines, peak cylinder pressure causes the rod to literally buckle!
great video mate do you find any issues with ST's ...ive just bought a puma ST and its got 12,000 on the clock
Don’t have any experience with this platform, sorry!
Brilliant use of tech/ idea, long term whos going to care about a few diagnostic sessions and minor parts replacement if it saves that large lump sum bill for an engine rebuild. Especially if you have the money to run an RS
Exactly! Maintenance on these cars goes a long long way.
Piston lands collapsed?
Great video. Not an Audi, but I've got an M140i and after watching this video I can safely say I have no plans of ever mapping it. Seems a daft to risk when it can ruin your engine so easily. It's not like these cars fall out of christmas crackers is it. Also +340hp in a hatchback is already silly power for public roads when you think about it!
The problem is pushing the engine to its limits, this is where you start to walk the line
@@medicineman7461What do you think the limit is on this motor? While I don't drive an Audi with this engine management tech, I've own many 2nd and 3rd Gen 5cyl putting out upwards of 650hp and never had an engine failure.
B58s map so easily and make great power. Plenty are running 6-800 on stock everything except inj, turbo, fp. Its a monster. I had one :)
Surely a bore scope would have seen the scoring prior to dismantling?
It would have, but the metal in the oil filter told us everything we needed to know :)
Brother looks tired of all the rs3s lmao. Great vid
I have a b9 rs5, any issues known with them?
The arms on the rocker valves. The needle bearings fail in them, we have rebuilt a few that have had this failure. Stay ontop of your oil servicing is the best advice I can give to prevent. Stick to 8k service intervals, strictly!
