Hey guys 🤪
Hope you enjoyed that one, let me know if this was helpful in any way!
Also check out my Lightroom pastel film presets here - geni.us/ccUXB
I am surprised at the results you got out of your 90 F2 It is one of my sharpest lenses right on par with me 18 and 33 1.4 Maybe I am lucky and have a great copy. Maybe yours is the Monday first build one? Thank you for the video. I have shot over 100K photos on the xt5 I do agree the AF could be a bit better in groups and events. I have been using manual focus a bit in these situations. Although I do not and would not shoot a wedding. Way to much work and long day for me. LOL
The Viltrox 27/75mm f1.2 lenses may be heavier like full-frame lenses, but in my opinion it can be worth it for those times you need full-frame-like images. 40/112mm f1.8 equivalent is not half bad and about as shallow of depth of field as I ever want. Also those photos of the gentleman with the Porsche are amazing.
A Porsche plus a male model is always a good set 😊
Yeah I agree but I’m wanting to be able to use primes for street photography, and I don’t want to use a heavy set up, but maybe I’ll keep it
Thank you for your honest video. Very well put, love your reasoning.
As I like longer focal lengths a bit more, I also shoot on the Viltrox 75 1.2, but it also is a quite heavy lens.
Yeah that lens would be fun to shoot on
For me the 56mm f1.2mk2 is king! i use this quite a lot for my weddings and basically 80% of the time for all my Portraits, it also has a close focusing ability which is great for those close up scenarios.
Awesome mate, Thanks for sharing!
Great vid, nicely balanced content. Subbed! Funny you should mention the 18 and the 33 f/1.4 lenses. Bought the first (it’s fantastic) and plan to buy the second. With these 2 lenses, you can cover a lot of ground. And like you, I hardly ever shoot beyond 50mm.
Oh thanks man, glad where on the same page in terms of focal lengths
Hey man, Like your content. Would love to see some more BTS of you shooting with the models.
Yeah I guess I’ve been slowly showing less and less BTS, but my Korea video there was heaps.
I’m gonna do “A day of portraits in Bali” so that will be a full BTS/vlog video
Agree who needs a full frame. That's why I shoot with a bigger cropper, the Fuji GFX. I wanted to do a side by side with XT5/56mm f1.2 and GFX100s/110mm f2 but need to get hold on the XF stuff. Maybe I rent one of these days.
Oh yeah medium format let’s go
Hello! Well, by no means is the XF 90mm F2 any soft. It is, despite of the 80mm Macro and maybe the new 18mm, the sharpest of Fuji‘s lenses, already at F2. Not only my conclusion of using all the mentioned lenses, but thorough reviews claim the same. Nice photos you have takes with your X-T5.
yeah i expect more from a heavy and expensive lens, im coming from full frame so i notice APSC lenses flaws!
Fuji lenses have disappointed me with how inconstant they are!
Did you find any autofocus improvement with the latest firmware update for the X-T5 ? Great vid and appreciate the use of the Viltrox lens to show them in real world use!
No not really just a tracking box for video, being able to transfer raw files is a plus
Most protog can go around with aps-c sensor, just have to stop comparing with full-frame and get the right tool for the right job :)
100% Crop sensors slap
Great Video
hey gerard! do you use narrative select to cull? if so do you get a consistent amount of 10 focus rating?
Yeah I do, it’s a great software. I mostly get 8 or 9 with some 10s
The 90mm was 6 or 7 same with the 16mm
Is there anything else you don't like about the Viltrox 27mm besides the size? Optically it seems sharper and colors look great, but yeah most people complain about the size. To me, the size is not that important because xt5 is already quite big and if I wanted something smaller I'd go for x100vi.
No complaints about the viltrox 27mm, if I’m supper picky the hood could be better like the viltrox 13mm
Credible, candid post appreciated, Gerard. If we are to be “spoiled” then “seriously spoiled” is the way to go.😊
As point of reference for portrait work IQ requirements, what’s the largest image size you’ve needed? My sense is that image size would be a key factor in choice of sensor size.
What’s the largest and smallest form factor you’ve used for portraiture?
Yeah, I’ve encountered Fuji “back focus” and “false focus flag” issues - even for single point (non-subject detect) images. Persistent Fuji issue.
Cheers!
The “false focus flag” is a good way of putting it, you think you have it in single point mode, but then you find out you missed.
The image size for me doesn’t really matter as I don’t print my work to big, but my clients do from my A7iv so maybe I should do a test

Yeah that 90mm is also a different render to the 33 and 18mm, makes editing harder
Like you said about the autofocus, I think they are one camera away from Sony and canon
Im here just for the model in the thumbnail 😃 JK, your videos are always good! Fuji is just price gouging these days. I sold my mirrorless gear and went back to A mount, CCD sensor Sony cameras with the excellent Minolta lenses from the 1980s. Not only is the whole system with camera and 4 lenses cheaper than just one budget mirrorless lens, the look of my portraits have a ton of character you dont get from modern camera and lenses. Clients have loved the more vintage and filmic look, so it's a win/win. I agree with pretty much everything you said here.
Ahahah not the I’m here for the thumbnail 😂.
Yeah this is way I shoot film, get that clean digital look plus the nostalgic film look
Heyaaaa, what will you prefer, fuji xt50 or lumix s9? 🙈
Xt50, as it has a mech shutter. I think you also get a better deal on the XT5 second hand than buy the new xt50
Interesting about the 90mm. Seems to usually be one of Fujis sharpest lenses ever even at F2. Were you using a hood? Seems like that might have been why the colors and rendering looked different.
Yeah to be 100% brutally honest, I think most FujiFilm users here on TH-cam don’t have that much experience with good lenses. There’s so much more to a lens than how sharp it is!
Things like consistent colour, clean bokeh, chromatic aberration ghosting and flare control the list goes on!
But yeah I didn’t use the hood, it was pretty soft light so it wouldn’t have made a difference.
If the backlight was strong then yeah for sure 👍
Does it support cfexpress type B card?
Hey again, still a no just SD
Sony a7CII or Fuji X-T5 for traveling? 😊
Well they are basically the same size, and the sigma f2 primes are amazing so I would say the a7cii on paper but I prefer the user experience of the XT5
@@gerardneedham yeah, agree. I have the Sony a7III with two heavy zooms and the Fuji X100V. I love the image quality of the Sony more but it's so heavy and so boring to use so I almost never take it with me... I also like Fuji for the colors and experience but x100v is not enough for traveling...it's more of an everyday camera. So I'm thinking about selling everything and either getting the Sony a7cII + 24-50 f2.8 or 20-70 f4 for traveling and a couple of primes for everyday carry OR the Fuji X-T5 (or even X-T50) + 16-80 f4 or Sigma 18-50 f2.8 and a couple of primes as well. Can't really decide. Sony has better specs, especially the autofocus, but the Fuji has a better experience (film simulations, dials, shutter sound etc). The A7CII is smaller itself but the lenses are usually bigger and more expensive. On the other hand, the X-T5 is also not that compact for an APS-C camera...
The lens hood MUST be used for the 90mm lens. That's why your photos are soft with this lens. I say this based on my own experience.
Yeah that would help, but it was pretty soft over cast lighting, cheers for the tip the person who I borrowed it off didn’t have the hood, I always use hoods on my lenses
Tip .
Pick one eye
Zone and more sensitive
Noted
If the Fuji X-T5 was a bit more compact with a better grip, a better EVF and a bit lower price, then it would have been close to perfect.
XE5, thats want you want!
@@gerardneedham X-E5 do not exists and the X-E series do not have any grip !
XT5 af is very buggy, hopefully they will fix this via firmware updates
Yeah it’s 90% there for portraits
im sure any camera sensor can do the trick under the right situations. I prefer the full frame as a personal preference. Looking for a second camera for everyday shooting and a crop sensor is fine
Yeah I also prefer using full frame, but my Sonys are so boring to use ahahaha. Crop sensor is great for fun and that’s about it hahaha
@@gerardneedham I enjoy my Nikon camera! 🙃
I suggest selling the 90mm and get the 80mm macro
Oooo that could be the way to go
sexy people, fantastic skin tones 🤙
Skin tones on point with Fuji
0:45 Please stop with those annoying fake autofocus confirmation sounds.
Oh I quite like it 🙃, but I can see how it’s annoying! It is the sound from the XT5 tho, I recorded it
