    Thank you so much! This is precisely what I've been looking for. I was beginning to think all chicken keepers that wanted to share their knowledge lived in the frozen north. We're moving to the GA/SC line and I had no idea how to help them beat the heat. Thanks again!

    If you have an ice maker in your fridge, put a shallow pan in the shade. Add ice cubes every now and then keeping melting ice cubes and the cold clean water in there during the hottest part of the day.

    I'm in Oklahoma so we've been getting similar temperatures. I've been adding electrolytes to their water and freezing it over night. I add ice cubes to their other plain water. Mine are only 7 weeks old so they don't like treats a whole lot yet but we've been offering them frozen watermelon and strawberries. We also have a mister that we set up for them. So far they seem to be fairing pretty well. Yesterday the heat index was 108 and they survived so yay!

    we have high temperatures but only in the low 90s but we have ridiculous humidity. Also, the temperature doesn't drop at night during the summer like it does elsewhere....speaking of Miami. So, I wonder how high humidity effects them. Great info!!

  • @joansmith3492

    Beautiful healthy looking birds! Good tips. I also live in the DFW area. I keep 2 fans going for my birds in the summer. I started putting a frozen blue ice thing under a piece of old tile and they actually use it. I also have a shallow pan of water in the shade for them to stand in (I haven't seen them use this yet). I used misters one year but I don't think the hens liked it and the misters clogged up within days. I also think that locating the coop/run in the shade is an absolute must.

    • @bmarsh011
      @bmarsh011  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I have talked with others that do the shallow pan of water too. Ours don't like fans. I like the tile idea, I've seen someone do that for rabbits in the coop tour we took. East Dallas Urban Backyard Chicken Coop Tour

    • @joansmith3492
      @joansmith3492 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Brandon Marshall I bet that's where I saw it! I don't put the fan directly on the roost either but I use them to keep a cross breeze going through the coop and the run. I have little silkie chickens and I think they take the heat pretty good.

    • @HoneyHollowHomestead
      @HoneyHollowHomestead 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, I guess that answers my question. I was wondering if a mister would work for them in your area. It's useless in mine, we are normally very humid. But we are having a really mild summer so far this year. Here it is, August 10, and I have NO a.c. on!! That is unheard of for these parts! However, as this is not the norm for us, I am building my new hen house and run in a nice shady area.

  • @loonypics6938

    Try covering the coop roof's with aluminium foil, it will reflect a real lot of the heat away. This DOES WORK !. To fix it, use GOOD quality double sided tape. Or you can use 1\2" cotton bandage or sim' and fix with drawing / picture pins. !.

It wont really work, I have hunter dogs and one has killed so many baby chicks and ducklings (We dont train them) We have disciplined our dogs (No we dont freaking smack them until they collapse) but we do put the (dead) chicken in a bag or something and not hard but we shove it into their face and shout. Yes ig its mean but its not abuse since they dont get hurt, Muzzles are also an option
      Dont get us wrong, We love our dogs so much but we dont want them killing other animals so

    The top of the chicken has a crown, much like the hat worn by the ancient man after the adult ceremony. Therefore, first of all, the chicken is actually very gentle and very "wen"! Secondly, everyone knows that chickens are fighting. From ancient times to the present, there is no shortage of cockfighters. The forks behind their claws are like an ancient weapon, so the second virtue of chicken is "wu"! What is related to Wude is the "courage" virtue, because the chicken is not only aggressive, but also very brave. Many ancient people have always worn a cock-like hat to illustrate that they are a warrior. Then, people who have raised chickens may know better, that is, chickens do not eat alone. After the owner throws food, they always shout and greet each other and eat together. This kind of behavior that pays attention to morality and morality is called "benevolence"! Finally, we all know that the cocks report on time every day, they keep their promises, and stick to the morality of the letter as "trust"!

    So i have both a question and a comment;
    1. Comment- awesome! Thanks for the info, this will be a good help! We are going from California’s 70 degree weather to Austin’s 100 degree so thank you.
    2. I believe you live inside a city, big or small, what kind of permission did you have to apply/get from HOA (if applicable in your area) or from city officials? Anything will help. We want to have a nice garden and chickens in Austin. I wanted outside Austin but that is not feasible so what do I have to do to keep Austin weird?
