Homemade edibles are notoriously overdosed. My brother in law had sworn off edibles after an experience that was super dissociative for him. @@jaytaylor7740 Because it was the only way I felt at peace when tripping. I tried doing it with friends, at a concert, alone at home, the beach...but I always felt some underlying anxiety, even though they were mostly good trips. Once I started going to the woods, it felt so perfect, I knew it was the only way for me. Now mind you, I have social anxiety so your situation might be different. But even if you do it with a guide, nature would be best.
i listened to james fadimans advice: "dont do shrooms if u have any doubts about doing them, also don't do them if u feel like u need to do them"... stuck to those guidelines and ive had 5 amazing as fuck mushroom trips!!!
I've had the experience Sam Harris describes of not having enough of a psychedelic putting you in an unpleasant space. I tried to take a small portion of an 111ug tab, hoping to kind of "work my way up" to 111ug over a couple of sessions. A few hours in, I just took the rest. It was like a never ending come-up: anxiety, uneasiness. Yuck.
Just some advice , sometimes you might see what you dont want to and once youve seen what you don’t want to , you are ready for a cosmic journey .. i had allot of anxiety on my third or fourth trip on shrooms but after a few hours i felt great once again being my self .. i hope n wish you all the best :)
Later in the podcast (after the 1 hour point) he explains that they don't want a later manic episode that would have happened with or without the use to be incorrectly attributed to the use. It's about having a scientific sample.
I find it unfortunate that you chose to include this portion of the discussion on youtube, rather than the part focusing on the idea of the separate co-existing selves. Not because I don’t think this first portion is interesting (and doubtless valuable to some people), but because I thought the latter portion would be more useful to more people (I think a number of the people I know might derive benefit from listening to it, but now I have no means with which to share it). Either way, thanks for a great interview!
7 grams of mushrooms is my personal favorite dose. In my experience, the larger the dose the less likely you are to have a "bad trip". My theory is that "bad trips" come from that lasting bit of reality you still have on lower doses. Higher doses make reality go out the window and you don't have the experience of tripping out from a perspective that's still somewhat grounded in reality. If that makes sense lol
Dr. Timothy Leary did group sessions. These don't really work. If you're going to do it , do it alone. Yes there will be fears but you need to check them out. Stay with it. No guides , no leaders , none of that. Standalone.
shrooms, or the effects of taking it, has had some awesome effects for me personally. that rare piercing the ceiling of the damp dark room and seeing what is actually outside - beautiful really. When it wears off the paralyses just hits in again. That connection between seeing what is outside the room and the freedom/beauty/tranquillity that comes with it, while in "reality' being in the damp room is... the challenge. Anyway, high a.f on shrooms and having one of those great times. When the stuff wears off and the window closes again. Fml. 😂🤣
at times on the ride its almost like having adhd. all the noise - u dont want to force anything, but still you want to get "somewhere". A lot of noise and constructed filters to pass by before that can happen, but time is the issue. never enough time to make the ride last, to see the sights and find what needs finding.
I think it's a bit naive to say having done a lot of different variations of substances isn't useful. In fact I think it's more useful than going deep with only a couple of them. Each one tells you its own lies and pulls you in some direction that you may think is good for your life, but might not be ideal - or even good - after all. Go too deep in one direction and you're stuck in a tunnel of the biases one of them produces. Also not even just different types of psychedelics! For example Ketamine has done more self-therapy for me in realistically guiding my life in a helpful direction than anything else.
.. it seems to me that psychedelics might catalyze a resonance among the trillions of subatomic particles in our bodies, so that everything works better.
I’m not a full subscriber but just in case, Sam how do we know other creatures are conscious other than they physically appear similar to us? Is this an assumption? Does this affect the moral landscape?
Who is "us"? Why draw the line there and not at you vs any other possible instance of consciousness. Consciousness seems to correspond to states of my brain, so it's natural to assume that other brains have corresponding consciousness. Also consciousness seems to be about whatever information is present or processed in a location. So I'd assume that places in which information is condensed might produce consciousness.
I don't agree that MDMA isn't a psychedelic. It certainly is, it is just a very weak such and you need a high dose to experience it for a short while. But when you focus on it with your mind you can get to the same place as you do on LSD for instance. If I close my eyes I can get to a +100ug LSD space on just 40mg of MDMA. But then of course I have to focus and that is not really what you are supposed to with psychedelics. It should force you there, not allow you to get there.
@@tomwellington2046 i should have had a disclaimer. Don't do a hero dose if you are unfit for it.. my comment was for those who are going to take the substances anyways. One could interpret your comment as if you were discouraging someone with a damaged mind from doing the things they could do to fix it...like a heroic does perhaps.

Yeah that was easy to misunderstand but , the " they" he's referring to are the psychology professors he was interacting with. Those people are the ones who didnt know about LSD yet. And FYI, LSD wasn't discovered in 1938. Thats only when it was 1st synthesized. It actually sat on a shelf for 5 years before ever being tested in any way or consumed by humans. April19th 1943 was the day of discovering its effect. Before that nothing was discovered about it in any way.
I love James ability to easily define ego death. I think his comments on DMT and chasing experiences(while some people do do this with negative connotation) are a little back-handed though considering his occupation-even if he himself has had the ephinany moment.
In my limited experience, I found LSD to be a lot easier to avoid bad experiences or headspace. I heard the analogy of being strapped to a rocket, mushrooms you have little to no control over the direction of the rocket, whereas LSD you can shift the direction relatively easily. That’s been my experience. LSD definitely is a different vibe and experience to mushrooms but not as ruthless IMO.

I figure I will soon go to a nice lake or other natural setting, and take the plunge. I hope my reaction will be, "Boy, I wish I had done this years ago." Once I figured out the only way I could trip was alone in the woods, I got up to 10g of mushrooms spending the day in a state park. It's always been both revealing and cathartic. Nothing to bug out about unless you can't face the truth about yourself.
You are alone, among many... peace Michael

Great book recommendation ❤
Eat 7g of mushrooms. Never a bad experience

Later in the podcast (after the 1 hour point) he explains that they don't want a later manic episode that would have happened with or without the use to be incorrectly attributed to the use. It's about having a scientific sample.
Basically they're not considered stable enough to bother working with in any clinical situations.

If that makes sense lol

shrooms, or the effects of taking it, has had some awesome effects for me personally. that rare piercing the ceiling of the damp dark room and seeing what is actually outside - beautiful really.
One important point that James misses as to why choose psilocybin over lsd is availability. You can grow your own.
I'd love to live in the USA where you can just walk into an acid dispensary and choose between strains of LSD.
@@bellezavudd lol. I really want LSD or MDMA.
Loved the episode
I think it's a bit naive to say having done a lot of different variations of substances isn't useful. In fact I think it's more useful than going deep with only a couple of them.
Each one tells you its own lies and pulls you in some direction that you may think is good for your life, but might not be ideal - or even good - after all. Go too deep in one direction and you're stuck in a tunnel of the biases one of them produces.
Also not even just different types of psychedelics! For example Ketamine has done more self-therapy for me in realistically guiding my life in a helpful direction than anything else.
This was great!!!
Sam, please do a podcast with Yanis Varoufakis
Interesting that he’s not used mdma etc but I do understand … apparently he just doesn’t need to .. everyone is different
Is it possible to do this without ingesting these?
.. it seems to me that psychedelics might catalyze a resonance among the trillions of subatomic particles in our bodies, so that everything works better.
I’m not a full subscriber but just in case,
Sam how do we know other creatures are conscious other than they physically appear similar to us? Is this an assumption? Does this affect the moral landscape?
Who is "us"?
Why draw the line there and not at you vs any other possible instance of consciousness.
Consciousness seems to correspond to states of my brain, so it's natural to assume that other brains have corresponding consciousness.
Also consciousness seems to be about whatever information is present or processed in a location. So I'd assume that places in which information is condensed might produce consciousness.
Did you say podcatcher?
I don't agree that MDMA isn't a psychedelic. It certainly is, it is just a very weak such and you need a high dose to experience it for a short while. But when you focus on it with your mind you can get to the same place as you do on LSD for instance. If I close my eyes I can get to a +100ug LSD space on just 40mg of MDMA. But then of course I have to focus and that is not really what you are supposed to with psychedelics. It should force you there, not allow you to get there.
Uh...that's actually neurotoxicity. Do your homework.
@@randall2158 No it is not. There isn't even any proven neurotoxicity from MDMA and from R-MDMA it is not even hypothetical.

‘They had not discovered LSD at this time’
Albert Hoffman discovered LSD in Switzerland in 1938...check your facts please.
Yeah that was easy to misunderstand but ,
the " they" he's referring to are the psychology professors he was interacting with. Those people are the ones who didnt know about LSD yet.
And FYI,
LSD wasn't discovered in 1938.

Interesting. My experience has been the opposite! This shows how different medicine effect us all.
Please invite James Lindsey on your podcast/youtube channel to discuss Critical Theory and it's impact on our culture (Climate Justice, Social Justice, Black Lives Matter, Antifa, ....). I agree with James' assessment in that it is very negative and may be catastrophic to our western culture.
