Of all the big rock songs... Bohemian Rhapsody, Stairway, Achilles Last Stand, Hotel California, Comfortably Numb, Time, Hey You, Echoes, Tunnel Of Love etc I think Bat Out Of Hell has the most impressive guitar arrangement. The song is kind of made up of several songs but doesn't sound contrived like, say, Bohemian Rhapsody, larger than life, like a comic book super hero, fun stuff
I used to think that the sound effect was done and the guitar solo was another take. If you listen carefully, Todd does the motorcycle thing and the guitar does a metermorphosis into the guitar solo. What a genius to do it all in ONE TAKE!! Perhaps Todd IS God!!
Ditto he passed away 2 days go so gutted was brought up by Meats music since I was 5 by my late mum and Jim so funny to true genius Jim n his motorcycle 😂🤣
Actually, the Classic Albums DVD was a couple years before this interview. Classic Albums features not just Jim but Meat, Todd, Ellen, Karla, Rory, and Max.
I drew a picture of Michael Schenker in front of two Marshall stacks on my folder in high school. It said "Schenker Rocks". This beautiful girl that sat next to me in home room took my folder and wrote on it "Todd Rocks Harder" lol. Great memory of a cool event right there.
BTW : distortion and/or overdrive + lots of echo/delay + bottleneck slide (that's the basic but you can experiment with more). Start at the bottom and slide up to rev ; start with bass strings and bring in higher ones for highlights; and pay no attention to what notes you are playing just FEEL that motorcycle.
Nope, no bottleneck slide, the grunt of the "engine" starts lower than possible on standard tuning You start with the tremolo totally slacking the strings and work up from there (just before the lyrics kick in again, you hear him work the whammy bar a few times)
"With Todd...anything's possible..." That says it all. Why is he backing Meatloaf again? Perplexing! "is it a Yamaha, a Kawasaki or a Harley davidson?" LMAO!
Rest in peace you absolute legend.
Mourning with you. What a gifted individual.
todd's guitar work is fantastic on bat out of hell, a very underrated musician!
"How can you do it with your guitar?"
He's Todd F***in' Rundgren, that's how!
i could here jim stienman talk about the bat out of hell album for hours and never get bored.
You can! Search for "Jim Steinman - 2003 Interview - Disc 1" and "Jim Steinman - 2003 Interview - Disc 2" on TH-cam.
@@erikmchatton It's STILL not enough! I wish he was here in 2023 with a podcast...can you imagine?
"With Todd...anything's possible..."

What a great combo, Jim , Meat, & Todd. Jim's songwriting skills are remarkable.
More proof that TR has always been underappreciated for his guitar skills.
He's categorically (not just because he's a Software Developer as well) a hero of mine quite literally!
Just saw Todd play live last night. Hearing that guitar tone in person is indescribable.
RIP Jim your music is immortal
That is one of the most wonderful studio stories I ever heard! Man, to have been a fly on the wall during the Bat Out Of Hell sessions...
R.I.P. Mater... We love you.
Incredible imitation of Todd. Perfect

Anybody who has TR working with them on their record is lucky as hell.
Great line, “I thought he was going to stop for gas.”

What an awesome insight to this fantastic record!
Love todd, love jim. Met jim and met todd. Two geniuses.
Lucky you 👍✌️❤️
Finally he mentions Todd!!!
OMFG!!!! This is hilarious!!! TR at his best - and Steinman admitting it??? They are BOTH the reason Meatloaf had his success!!!
I'm laughing at all these stories of Jim Steinman. He is soooo funny.
Ditto he passed away 2 days go so gutted was brought up by Meats music since I was 5 by my late mum and Jim so funny to true genius Jim n his motorcycle 😂🤣
Steinman and Rundgren. 1 more fucking time please!
I am SHOCKED that no one has put Bat Out Of Hell on Broadway yet. I better fucking get on that
OzzyOscy And it's amazing. Check it out if you get the chance
RIP, funny and very talented guy.

Funny stuff
Non leaded or diesel?
Karla DeVito. In addition to appearing in the videos, she toured with Meat Loaf in 1977-78.
... with Todd, anything is possible. It's been 40 + years I suppose but remember around '73-74 "Todd is God" was graffitied around quite a bit.

I thought that Todd's guitar work on BooH was fantastic, especially the solo on the title track, but yes the motorcycle part was also incredible.
I always thought Todd hit the motorbike spot on until now but now I know different because his "Harley" sounded like a Kawasaki to me.
+Twirlyhead hahah
Oh, I forgot to ask, do you want a Yamaha, a Kawasaki or a Harley Davidson? ;-)
I so love this sequence! Would be great to meet Jim again someday.
Todd Rundgren is a fucking genius!!
Developed what I think was the first software for a video input card I think too, he's a software developer of course as well :)
I never knew this was a guitar let alone Todd. 6:00 into the song. Damn....
its from a series and the name is meat loaf:classic albums.wel there where i saw the interview
I thought this would be about Todd's playing style. I kind of forgot about this song.

Does anyone know if he used Strats or Les Pauls or what on Bat Out Of Hell?
he used a Fender Mustang
I bet it would have sounded awesome if he DID stop for gas.
