It sucks but the only way to fix it is to release the physical version of a game months after digital. Not all companies are going to delay a game multiple times if there are issues unfortunately.
It sucks that GameStop left my country almost 5 years ago at this point. I used to enjoy shopping there, especially the buy 3, get 2 deals. Thankfully, in Finland, we still have decent mom-and-pop stores that are always fully stocked, and you can find some gems there. It's kind of funny that here, the equivalent of Target (I think?) is the best way of getting even the smaller releases. Even though they're a large corporation, they just keep on selling these small indie titles for some reason- and for a really good price too.
Happened to me with Ys Nordics. Popped in to see if they had a copy on the day of release and they had pre-order copies only. Had to wait a week to get a copy.
Just got Slitterhead on the PS5. It's from the creator of Silent Hill, Siren and Gravity Rush and the music is composed by Silent Hill composer Akira Yamaoka. The game was heavily censored on the R3 Asian version even though it says 18+ on the box. The sex and nudity is gone from the game and some of the blood is black and dark red instead of red. I wonder if the U.S version of the game is censored. Hopefully you can make a deep dive if you ever pick the game up. Avoid the Asian Region 3 and the Japanese version at all cost. From what I saw on the forums on social media, the German physical version is uncensored.
I'm about to call it quits with the PS5. I'm not a fan of Nintendo either. I just don't enjoy newer games anymore. Got the PS3 out of the closet recently and I was really enjoying it. I like angry meathead Krators in the old God of War games. The new dad of war babysitter edition doesn't appeal to me.
Same. My PS5 is used to play PS4 games. I bought an old Ps2 and have been enjoying those games more. The stories seem better and more fun. The only game I've enjoyed on the Ps5, outside of "remasters," was Robocop: Rogue City.

Big issues 1. Unfinished games 2. Unlockable content in video games behind paywalls/increased grinding to unlock things, to get you to pay. 3. The ability to fix a video games problems post launch is like hiding your mistakes of a finished product. Sometimes, when games put a lot of updates, it creates a confusing experience. When there is 20 updates for a single game you can't even have a conversation with other people that played the game because they played it during different updates. So the experience isn't even the same. 4. No confidence in digital games always being available. If I purchase a game I need to always be able to play it. 5. The lack of a game rental market also provides distorted views of what people actually want. Most people don't have a choice and have to pay full price and Game developers think because people are buying the games when it comes out that must be what they want.

Couldn't tell you the last time I entered one of those places. It's not like the ancient days when you had Babbage, Funcoland, EBGames and so on. Even used game stores tend to not have a whole lot of stuff predating PS2. Minus World had a whole bunch of stuff, up to and including 3DO games but that place is an hour north of here.
Publishers don't give a fuck about shipping a complete game because buyers don't give a fuck about buying an incomplete game. Game patches may be available beyond directly downloading them from the console's servers, sure, but who's to say other sites that host patches as a backup will be online forever?
I recently been back to collecting PS3 games from my Game Xchange store/eBay and was able to pickup some great titles for the system.. I picked up Silent Hill Downpour, Mafia 2, Dead to Rights Retribution, God of war 1-3, Ninja gaiden Sigma, Dragon Age Origins & Dantes Inferno 🔥 🎮 its been a great time collecting and playing on the system again...
That's right Reggie, the price of these games, they should be fully beta tested and complete, no DLC and patches. It should all be complete. Also IMHO I think the games should back to carts but the type of roms made to last. But not like the Evercade carts. Evercade carts actually contain SDFLASH memory and it is not a ROM, they are read and written to in order to save the game, which means the memory is being written to and not just read. Also they simply aren't made for longevity, like Snes, atari, nes, geneis type carts are made. I don't buy any of the new consoles, I only put my money into my comptuer, and on it I have practically any game I can ever want. If a game company creates a new console with ROM carts and longevity in mind which games were fully tested etc, then and only then I would be interested in them again, to me that would be worth spending my money on. Persona 3 Reload and the new Ys game are great… I played Robocop on my PC.. there just isn’t enough PS5 games and it shows. My GameStop had 1 preorder for Horizon ZDR, & we got 3 copies. Also if you think that’s a lot of PS4 games for a GS, you should see my store in the STL suburbs, LoL. We also have triple the amount of XBox games as the store in the video.

Yah it’s definitely hot and miss at GameStop I’m in Canada and microplay is your best bet for niche market games. They typically get a bit of stock of every title. Also do preorders too
Most GameStops now will not get anything but pre-orders anymore unless it's Call of Duty, Mario, Zelda, etc. Nobody shops there anymore for games, just systems and accessories and gift cards. I think the reason for that is more to do with GameStop teaching their customers that they never have anything, rather than no one wanting to buy the games. They killed their own business model after the pandemic by abandoning physical games.
The Nintendo Wii was the last great game console. Games were properly finished before being published, with no patches. Almost no DLC. Loads of great games, most of which are super cheap these days. Wiiware. Emulation. GameCube compatible. I know some people don't like the motion controls, but I like them. (Ok it had a lot of shovelware, but it also had plenty of classics).
I’m at the point where I don’t have to play anything as soon as it comes out no matter the hype. I’ll wait for the definitive edition or greatest hits version with all the patches and dlc on disc.
I wish AAA would either wait or re-release a complete edition after a year or two so they are archival copies. The mail-order releases, indie, & a lot of Japanese games seem to be a LOT better about this.

I'm not a fan of day 1 patches, of course if the game requires it then it requires it but I agree with you in the sense that when I open a box on a physical product I expect it to be complete, finished, the full experience on disc.
In today's world, physical editions should at least be released one or two months after digital. They need to have patch or two. Good examples are Alan Wake 2 (a bit longer period though) and Black Myth Wukong.
they are but they are called "special, ultimate, or collector's" edition. they are normally released a yr later. i rarely buy games on day 1 with a few exceptions
I had a feeling I was going to find something interesting this trip to store. Years ago I got the Tales of Vesperia collections edition for $14.99 because GameStop values collectors editions of standard games as trade in.

The day one patches have always been a mixed bag for me. If the patches are updates to fix smaller issues like minor frame rates or subtitling and such I'm okay with. The major issue I have is when a game comes out extremely glitched and broken like Assassins Creed Unity and they expect gamers to just accept that sort of quality and wait for a patch to fix the issues later on. Unfortunately Ubisoft has not learned their lesson as Assassins Creed Mirage and Star Wars Outlaws both came out with extremely awful performance quality and once again gamers were expected to just wait until Ubisoft released a patch to fix those issues.
No Reggie you are not wrong in thinking this way about alot of games needing day one patches. It's a disgusting practice. I also pre-ordered Daymare 1994 but for ps5 and it was broken when I put it in. I could have just done an update but I sent it back to the publisher for a refund. Ofcourse they excused it. We must stand up to this behavior!
Physical media, all physical media, may not really come back until all the people who vehemently defend digital and streaming realized that hey've been hoodwinked. But even then will it be too late?

Day one patch is NOT OK. It's exhausting to have to check online if the game is fully playable raw from the disc. Because if it's not, I don't want it.
I don't buy digital. When a game goes gold, it's supposed to mean it's complete and ready for public sale but that meaning got throw out when digital came along. Games should be complete on the disk and be playable offline. Devs/publishers of today couldn't survive if they had to put out a finished games like back in PS2/PS1/N64/SNES, etc.

Honestly you are missing something. Games used to be released with tons of bugs AND NEVER GOT PATCHED. BioWare games especially are loaded with serious game-breaking bugs that were never fixed. Bethesda games too. I for one am glad that bug fixes exist. I remember before the Internet THERE WERE NO BUG FIXES.
I'm happy that patches exist as well, but now it feels like they are being used as a crutch and we are the beta testers. Games have been released in broken states in the past with no patches to fix them I agree, but with how far we come today, you think they would test the games out especially before it gets to a physical format.

Jedi Survivor physical is a 100+gb download...the entire game must download 😅, if it ever goes offline you cant play it from that disc its just not on there...OH YET you have to have the disc(with nothing on it) in the system to play 🤣🤣 i should have just bought digital, then wouldn't have to put it in...They made it stupid to own the physical version of that for sure in multiple ways
a day 1 patch is reality of modern physical releases. for me, if the patch is larger than 1 GB i will start complaining. anything less than 1GB i can live with. if the patch is bigger than 1 GB i don't consider it a physical release.
The major fear if game consoles and even movie studios go all digital next gen and later on in a few years as that it takes away a major portion of control from gamers and game owners and movie/music customers as they'll have no real physical ownership of their games/movies/music anymore. Seriously look what Sony did in Europe and none of the customers could really do anything except maybe cancel their subscription but the money they paid for their digital purchases was apparently nonrefundable so they got doubly !@#!. If the next game consoles are digital only then that's it for this gamer though thankfully it looks like Nintendo plans for the Switch 2 to still be a physical game console so if the worst happens then looks like Nintendo may be getting a huge number of new customers later on.
It might happen to ps 6, so it makes sense to buy several back up ps5, update them regularly. I consider doing it if the money permits. At the same time building huge collection ps4/5 games that are complete.

I just don't really buy new games anymore. The PS5/Series generation has been awful all around for both gaming and physical game ownership. FPS games are all pushing some sort of agenda either woke, LGBT+ garbage or something similar. Sony own IP's and to some extend Microsoft ones are so watered down in gameplay and difficulty to try and include as many people as possible to play them that they just are not fun. The difference for example The Last of Us on PS3 or even the PS4 remaster Vs TLOU Part I oh gosh it's bad. FPS as a genre is dead more or less as it's now all live service when it comes to this genre. Gaming back on the PS3 was just better and most of the times the game is fully on the disc you buy which is nice. There were even releases of complete editions of games even if they did not win GOTY which was super cool! Especially if you were a collector. I will never stop collecting and playing my PS3 and PS4 because with how PS5 has set the tone for the future of modern gaming I am not here for it.
The PS3 & Ps4 are still far superior than the PS5 when it comes to game titles & fun factor.

The PS5 is so boring. I’m just using it for PS4 games, TV shows, and anime at this point. It’s basically just my RPG box other than that lol.
Genuinely only exclusive I've used it for is ff7 rebirth and Returnal, and I've certainly gone out of my way to see what else is out there

On physical media now in days I always wait and see if it’s complete on disk if it is, I’ll buy. If not, I’ll wait for a $10 sale!🤷🏽♂️ Digital foundries Reddit etc.. really good on telling you if it’s complete or not.
This is one of the main reasons I stopped buying physical media for Xbox with its smart delivery this generation.
I'm not a fan of day 1 patches, of course if the game requires it then it requires it but I agree with you in the sense that when I open a box on a physical product I expect it to be complete, finished, the full experience on disc.

In today's world, physical editions should at least be released one or two months after digital. They need to have patch or two. Good examples are Alan Wake 2 (a bit longer period though) and Black Myth Wukong.
they are but they are called "special, ultimate, or collector's" edition. they are normally released a yr later. i rarely buy games on day 1 with a few exceptions

@ that’s what love about GameStops is the pricing on SOME stuff. They have increased the cap on rare games to $119 but if you can find rare ps1 games then it’s a win.

The day one patches have always been a mixed bag for me. If the patches are updates to fix smaller issues like minor frame rates or subtitling and such I'm okay with. The major issue I have is when a game comes out extremely glitched and broken like Assassins Creed Unity and they expect gamers to just accept that sort of quality and wait for a patch to fix the issues later on. Unfortunately Ubisoft has not learned their lesson as Assassins Creed Mirage and Star Wars Outlaws both came out with extremely awful performance quality and once again gamers were expected to just wait until Ubisoft released a patch to fix those issues.

No Reggie you are not wrong in thinking this way about alot of games needing day one patches. It's a disgusting practice. I also pre-ordered Daymare 1994 but for ps5 and it was broken when I put it in. I could have just done an update but I sent it back to the publisher for a refund. Ofcourse they excused it. We must stand up to this behavior!
Physical media, all physical media, may not really come back until all the people who vehemently defend digital and streaming realized that hey've been hoodwinked. But even then will it be too late?

Day one patch is NOT OK. It's exhausting to have to check online if the game is fully playable raw from the disc. Because if it's not, I don't want it.

I don't buy digital. When a game goes gold, it's supposed to mean it's complete and ready for public sale but that meaning got throw out when digital came along. Games should be complete on the disk and be playable offline. Devs/publishers of today couldn't survive if they had to put out a finished games like back in PS2/PS1/N64/SNES, etc.

Honestly you are missing something. Games used to be released with tons of bugs AND NEVER GOT PATCHED. BioWare games especially are loaded with serious game-breaking bugs that were never fixed. Bethesda games too.
I for one am glad that bug fixes exist. I remember before the Internet THERE WERE NO BUG FIXES.
I'm happy that patches exist as well, but now it feels like they are being used as a crutch and we are the beta testers. Games have been released in broken states in the past with no patches to fix them I agree, but with how far we come today, you think they would test the games out especially before it gets to a physical format.

Jedi Survivor physical is a 100+gb download...the entire game must download 😅, if it ever goes offline you cant play it from that disc its just not on there...OH YET you have to have the disc(with nothing on it) in the system to play 🤣🤣 i should have just bought digital, then wouldn't have to put it in...They made it stupid to own the physical version of that for sure in multiple ways

a day 1 patch is reality of modern physical releases. for me, if the patch is larger than 1 GB i will start complaining. anything less than 1GB i can live with. if the patch is bigger than 1 GB i don't consider it a physical release.
It's all one big hustle with these gaming companies to make more money😢.
I feel like this gen as much as many are released incomplete some still are. But next gen will end that sadly. I feel digital will dominate next gen.

The major fear if game consoles and even movie studios go all digital next gen and later on in a few years as that it takes away a major portion of control from gamers and game owners and movie/music customers as they'll have no real physical ownership of their games/movies/music anymore. Seriously look what Sony did in Europe and none of the customers could really do anything except maybe cancel their subscription but the money they paid for their digital purchases was apparently nonrefundable so they got doubly !@#!. If the next game consoles are digital only then that's it for this gamer though thankfully it looks like Nintendo plans for the Switch 2 to still be a physical game console so if the worst happens then looks like Nintendo may be getting a huge number of new customers later on.
It might happen to ps 6, so it makes sense to buy several back up ps5, update them regularly. I consider doing it if the money permits. At the same time building huge collection ps4/5 games that are complete.

I just don't really buy new games anymore. The PS5/Series generation has been awful all around for both gaming and physical game ownership.
FPS games are all pushing some sort of agenda either woke, LGBT+ garbage or something similar. Sony own IP's and to some extend Microsoft ones are so watered down in gameplay and difficulty to try and include as many people as possible to play them that they just are not fun. The difference for example The Last of Us on PS3 or even the PS4 remaster Vs TLOU Part I oh gosh it's bad.
FPS as a genre is dead more or less as it's now all live service when it comes to this genre.
Gaming back on the PS3 was just better and most of the times the game is fully on the disc you buy which is nice. There were even releases of complete editions of games even if they did not win GOTY which was super cool! Especially if you were a collector.
I will never stop collecting and playing my PS3 and PS4 because with how PS5 has set the tone for the future of modern gaming I am not here for it.
