I have both pens. When I ordered them, I thought I liked the Metropolitan better, but after using them for a while, I think I prefer the Safari. Nice video.
That's funny, me too! I think the Lamy glides better on the paper. But now I have the kaweco and it's so cute it has a special place in my heart. (note that it also write well, I'm not only liking it because of the cuteness)
I really like all those older models, I think it's all about how it's design. I think the Lamy Safari and the Kaweco Sport are my two favorite designs. Would you have any other pens like that you would recommend me?
+SweetLittleCarrot Difficult. I think the Safari/AL-Star is somewhat unique, at least in Germany. The wide variety of colors and limited editions every year make it not only a good workhorse but also highly collectible (I think I have a dozen of them)
actually you can refill your cartridges with different colors of ink after usage. You can easily do it with a syringe and a needle. I think on Brian Goulet's channel he also talks about using this method as well :)
Enjoyed your video. I've already ordered a Metropolitan and it's supposed to be here tomorrow. Excited! I do intend to buy a safari too. Lol....Melissa
Thank you for posting this informative video between the two pens. I have purchased a Pilot Metropolitan in Red after watching this video. Keep up the good work with all your fountain pen videos. Wish you all the best!
I have both the Pilot Metropolitan and the Lamy Al-Star, which is the metal version of the Safari. Recently bought a Lamy Studio with an EF nib and I'm in love.
The Pilot Metropolitan was my first fountain pen. I hardly ever use it anymore(I think I have close to 30 fountain pens now!) but it still holds a place in my heart.
Caroline, I only possess one of those pens - the Lamy Safari special edition, 'All Black'; kinda like stealth scribes, & I would agree, the Safari is an extremely robust implement; very durable, solid nibs (mine is a Broad); an Every Day Carry, (amongst others) that goes everywhere with me. I cannot say I am hugely fond of the Metropolitan - I have other Pilot's, but the one I always reach for in that brand, is my 78G - an older pen, certainly, but the quality is very apparent as soon as you pick it up, yet similarly to the Metropolitan, relatively inexpensive. I have used the Pilot model - a friend lent me theirs - but I am still undecided on whether to purchase same. That is one, vibrant shade of pink !! Bit too bright for me - I'll stick with my stealth colour. I think the Metropolitan also comes in a slightly subtler hue, as well - so I'd elect something a little more toned down ;D Great comparison - let's have more of these, please :D
Thank you for the comparison between the two pens. I do have the Pilot Metropolitan and love it! I have not yet tried the Lamy but I will now. Take care!
I'm thinking a lot in getting into the fountain pens and i think i'll start with the Pilot, thanks for sharing your point of view. I know this is a bit off topic but i wanted to say that you have a beautiful smile and a sweet voice =)
My favourite inks. Lamy Turquiose, Watermans Serenity Blue and Diamine Ancient Copper. Most reliable ink which helps keep your pens clean is Quink Blue -black. Schaeffer Black. Boring but cheap and good. Diamine Inks are really good and you can get sample bottles to try out.
They are way different, at least in the US. The Pilot Metropolitan MR series is just a designation for certain design features, and they are metal. The Kakuno is fatter, plastic, has no clip and definitely a starter pen.
I have a question which is better for beginners the safari or the metropolitan since people say that the metropolitan feels a bit smoother at the beginning but after a while the safari seems to be more smooth any suggestions?
there are 3 series of metropolitan fountain pens, the classic series with 3 colors, Animal series 4 colors and retro series with 6 colors, the rose gold one is from the the retro series.
The Pilot Prera is nice too, maybe a little more expensive at around $35-$40, but I think it writes as nice as some high end pens I tried at pen stores or events.
I've been thinking about getting one. I think the cream Prera looks really good. But I've been buying a few platinum pens and I really like them. So my next decision would have to be between a prera and a Procyon.
@@SweetLittleCarrot the comment you replied to is about 6 months old. I’ve since splurged on a lot more higher end pens. If you are going to spend as much as a Procyon costs, may as well check Amazon, get a Platinum 3776 or Sailor Pro Gear Slim for approx $100, with 14k nibs. You won’t regret it!!
@@geslinam9703 Ha ha, yes, I hadn't checked my comments in a long time. I have been eyeing the sailor pro gear slims. But in CAD$ they are closer to 200$... One day, I just got into mechanical keyboards, so I'm going to enjoy the pens I have for now.
I'm confused between parker frontier & lamy safari... I want a fountain pen that can be used for rendering too... Will parker frontier do... As its cheap & I've never used a fountain pen before... So 1st want to know how to handle a fountain pen...
The first thing you need to know, it not to put as much pressure on you pen than you would do with a ball point pen. Other than that, you'll find that it's much easier to use than you might think. Tell me how you like it when you get it! 😊
I may add to her already outstanding advice that in your case it would be a good idea to start out with cheaper pens, like the Pilot Petit1 and Platinum Preppy, both of which cost around $3-5, and are actually very good. That way you will know if you really like FPs, and then work your way from them to the better ones.
Hi, great video. I bought both the Lamy Safari (and the Vista and the Alstar) and the Pilot Metropolitan and they are not bad. I would like to suggest the Platinum Plaisir mainly because you can swap the section with a Platinum Preppy, so I have now got a Plaisir with an extra fine (0.2) Japanese nib. All you have to do isunscrew the sections between the two.
Hi Peter (I had not seen your comment) I got into the platinums since then. It all started with a preppy and I now have one plaisir and the three cool or crystal depending on where. They are definitively my favourite pens at the moment.
My lady friend liked my yellow safari with its 1.1 Lamy nib and a bottle of Lamy Turquoise ink. So of course I gave her both. I prefer my Green Retro pop Pilot metropolitan with the 1.0mm cm stub nib. I use Seitz Kreuznach Palm green ink in it. Nice. We are two happy people now. I love Pilot pens and have just dropped £150 on a a pearly white Decimo with a Medium 18k Rhodium plated gold nib and I am very happy. I use it with Iroshizuku murasaki-shikibu ink. I don't need any more pens now. Nice informative videos. Lamy nibs are really easy to swap. Ef to 2.9mm I think. Do a Pilot Decimo video. Get your loved one to buy it for you
am planing to improve my handwriting and probably pick up cursive along the way. I've been thinking of getting a fountain whihc is between this two. Would you suggest getting a fountain pen first of just practise with a normal pen first?
that's a fast reply! yeah i guessed so too but can't really decide to go for the LAMY or the metropolitan. Since in my country its around 100 bucks for the LAMY and about 50 for the pilot.
Allen Chong If you did not buy anything yet get a platinum preppy and test it if it is good (it is a cheap but good fountain pen) and you got used to it eyedropper convert it or buy better fountain pen

Hi, sorry for the late reply, I havent checked my comments for a while. I would say that the variation in the safari nibs is quite big. I have very mediums fine nibs. In general, German nibs are bigger than Japanese nibs so that's one thing to also take into consideration. Hope that helps :)
