"The Creator" Is the Best of the Worst.

  • The Creator is either the worst good movie of 2023 or the best bad movie.
It's like great software that's operating on janky hardware. But it failed to lift itself above “average” in large part due to ham-fisted dialogue that’s written to spell out the motivations of otherwise hazy characters as they make their way through a pretty enigmatic fictional world.
The finer details though, the actual Sci-Fi concepts behind the world of The Creator and the robots that occupy it, unfortunately, not as strong.
The real shame of The Creator is that a lot of the best stuff in it is lifted from far superior works of fiction. Don’t get me wrong, there’s a few intriguing original concepts in The Creator but most of them are unfortunately only touched on momentarily, primarily used as plot devices, and then left vaguely defined only to never be revisited.
This movie is rife with nebulous concepts that could benefit from just a little bit of context or at least some explanation.
It’s what makes The Creator such a frustrating movie. It sails on the creative winds of the great sci-fi that’s preceded it while attempting to introduce mind-bending concepts of its own to the genre.
But unlike those sci-fi classics that inspired The Creator, this movie’s original ideas are nothing but illusions that fade the moment you approach them with even simple intellectual curiosity.
As much as I wish The Creator was a cleaver new entry in Sci-Fi, it’s not. Its derivative. Don’t get me wrong, I actually kind of like this movie. There’s some good stuff going on it. A fascinating setting, meaningful themes, an entertaining plot. But it’s burdened with an overabundance of bland characters, writing that’s as clunky as some of the robots featured in it, and inconsistent stakes that consistently undermine the sense of danger in key moments.
It’s not a bad movie by any stretch of the imagination, especially if you’re just looking for something to satisfy a Sci-Fi craving but chances are you’re not going to remember it a week later either. Which is why I recommend catching it for free eventually when it’s available. It’s average and flawed but at least it’s not another reboot, sequel, or “product based” movie THAT the studios are churning out like chicken nuggets these days.

Good film but it broke my mind how nomad would be at so many different places in the world at once as well as it being both in space and in atmosphere at the same time.

As much as I love Denzel Washington, John David Washington is simply a bad actor. He is as bad as he was in the TENET.

Really I think this movie falls into the category of "the more you think about it, the more frustrating it gets" since the potential is there but the hamfisted imagery and messages along with little to no context story-wise just pull you out of the movie. I was waiting for them to explain things more until I realized at the hour 50 mark that I wasn't going to get any answers to things that REALLY could've used some more explaining. Quite a shame, I hope they learn from the criticism.

I had a really similar experience. I was having a pretty good time until it started to dawn on me that most of my questions weren't going to get answered. Lots of missed potential. Maybe we get a "Cyberpunk Edge runners type" spinoff series, if we're lucky.

"As much as I wish the creator was a clever new entry in sci-fi, it's not" Seriously though, I genuinely feel like this movie has a strong base and could have easily been THE sci-fi film of the year, at a time when many sci-fi movies are just either "meh" or straight up bad. But nope, it's another movie you just kinda have to shut down your brain to somewhat enjoy.
May I add, NOMAD is many things and a "space station" is not one of them, like I get that many soft sci-fi writers don't quite understand what an orbit is but bruh, that thing literally flying like an airplane and hovering like a zeppelin that ain't no space station, it's more like a flying weapons platform that is somehow able to hover outside of the atmosphere.

@@BluntPlunkReviews For sure. And ultimately all of this is subjective so it's awesome tat people love it. It's a great thing that this movie got made and I hope that this is indicative of a larger trend of mid budget Sci-Fi coming back that puses the industry as a whole to embrace creativity.

Doesn’t alfy just temporarily shut off nomad to stop the missiles launch so the explosive Denzel jr sticks to one of the missiles can explode? And start a chain reaction of missile explosions of all the other adjacent missiles. Didn’t think it was a self destruct mechanism there. Oh wait who cares.

Also, we can see in other scenes like the Tank one that the U.S. does very well without NOMAD in many cases. NOMAD is usually used after the ground troops finish their work.
The U.S. military in the movie wanted to get the location of the AI bases. And NOMAD fired on them before it was destroyed.
Ignoring the question “why is it the missiles rely on NOMAD to detonate or locate their targets?” (Modern day missiles don’t rely on this; why do future missiles do)
Why is everyone celebrating NOMAD’s destruction? Sure the battlestation is gone, but the U.S. knows the location of the AI bases anyways. They can just load up a bunch of space bombers and bomb the crap out of them anyways.
The AI are still going to lose.

@@BluntPlunkReviews Yeah, for me there were even scenes which could be cut entirely, didn't add to the plot/flow, and there was one which was even confusing - the scene where colonel badass grandma "interogates" the sexdoll. It was too late into another action and the "information" was incomprehensible. Just frustrating.
Overall I kinda enjoyed it (just watched and opened your review), visually it was awesome. Wish more this grounded style be more mainstream.
