Thank you so much! We aren't happy about the infestation, but we also want to handle it in a way that isn't going to cause problems for us when we harvest. The last thing we want to do is take away value from the vegetables we are consuming, and we think this is a good way to prevent that. Thank you so much for watching! We really appreciate your support. Have a great rest of your weekend!
Aphids are the most annoying pest in the garden Diatomaceous Earth is my go-to product for pest control, I also mix it in water, applying with a spray bottle .. Great information Thank you
I have my pepper plants indoors and aphids are just starting to increase. The DE after several days have absolutely no effect on aphids on top of leaves. It is also hard to treat the undersides of the leaves since the DE won't stick.
what I have done is to mix some DE with water and spray both sides. After a month, I could see that the wet spray seemed to have worked about 90 % . Not to completely rid them but has controlled them. Only issue is I sprayed several times and the leaves are whitish
I'm in a house with no screen doors, so the owner hung one of those hanging screen doors from Walmart. Great but ,at the bottom, it's not real tight against bugs. So I laid a couple inch wide strip of borox.I just bought diatomaceous earth with calcium bentonite. Is there a difference in diatomaceous earth?
Hello, and sorry for the very late reply. It looks like the calcium bentonite is added to the DE for the purpose of keeping it from clumping up. We have only ever used the food grade DE, but I don't think that would be a problem for your purposes at all. :)
You certainly have beautiful vegetables growing. So big! I am just not good with vegetables at all. Sometimes I can get a tomato or two. I will need to watch this spring and see what I can learn for an outdoor tomato...that actually fruits!
Thank you so much! We have been working hard to keep everything growing inside. I think there is a lot of trial and error, but it all starts with the soil (or soiless mix - in our indoor garden), and I am sure you can produce some delicious tomatoes this upcoming season. :) We will be there growing them too, for sure. Have a fantastic day, and thank you for watching!
I had aphids last year on my spring starts. Luckily they were in small pots, I could take them and run them under water and got rid of most. You have a battle for sure, Hope you win the war!!
Water is a great help like you said, especially in pots or outdoors. The DE has been really helpful so far. We have added another front to our attack though. :)
Yes the diatoms you dont want in lungs they are shells powdered. I wish you luck with the procedure and yes the aphids willl not survive it. its soaks them up and they dehydrate. I had aphids on my pepper seedling shopbought years ago. It does look like snow. Are you growing these in an enclosure?
Thank you so much for watching. Yes, these are all in our indoor growing space (our vivosun grow tent) in a raised bed. The DE is definitely taking it to the aphids. It is a great natural solution. We want to make sure we aren't losing any of our vegetables to them. Have a wonderful day!
Thank you so much! It is amazing how a natural resource like this can make such a huge difference with these pests, and my are they pests. I don't know if you have had to deal with them before, but they grow like crazy if you don't put a stop to them right away. Have a fantastic day!
@@GutenGardening Bugs are the archetype of consistency and we must match and go one step farther for every instar that the bug has, if more people only knew how thorough you had to be for complete eradication, they would have an extremely righteous IPM schedule when not a single bug is in sight!🐜🐜
You are spot on! I also think this is true when it comes to brassicas like Broccoli, for example. If folks knew what happens when you soak your fresh from the garden broccoli in a little salt water, they might have a creamer picture of just how much life is constantly around all the plants. :)
I was reading about that! It is pretty amazing how many uses there are for this microscopic dust! They roll around in it as a dust bath as well, right? Food grade is the only way, for sure! Have a fantastic day Julie, and thank you so much for all your support!
I used to put D.E. in my smoothies. I also use it in the chickens dust bath. I would spray it on some of my plants, too. Now, you'll have to do an "after" video to show us how it went.
Hello Ann! I have heard of people using it as a dust bath, but had not heard about using it in smoothies. How did it taste and what were the benefits there? I can tell you (even without a follow up video yet) it seems to be working. :)
@@GutenGardening - There really wasn't much difference in the smoothies. I was doing it in hopes of maybe cleaning out my arteries (or whatever). Don't know if it helped or not, though. I would get it by the 20lb bag off amazon usually.
Thank you so much! Aphids are a tough one, aren't they? But, we are happy to already be seeing some success in our fight against them with this DE. We really appreciate you enjoying the content with us. Have a wonderful day!!!
We are so glad you found the video helpful! :) This is a great organic, natural solution to a problem that can easily get out of hand. Have a fantastic day, and thank you for enjoying our channel!
Hopefully the DT does the job. Your indoor garden is so beautiful! 🙂 I'm still fighting aphids in our outdoor garden...on my broccoli and collards; however, keeping on top of them with Neeme is winning the battle.🙂
So far so good with the DE. We can already see a big difference in our raised bed. It is amazing how persistant those little insects can be. We really have to stay on top of them. How are you applying the neem oil in your garden?
These aphids are alive all over the bottoms of my cucumber leaves which are covered in the food grade DE. How is this possible?! I'm about to spray them down w Neem. Wish me luck
Aphids drive me CRAZY! I have tried organic sprays with little success and am now trying DE. One thing that was amazing was live ladybugs. I released some in my greenhouse and they devoured the aphids. The only problem was, when they ran out of food they died. Also, it is difficult to buy live ladybugs where I live.
I can understand your frustration with aphids, they can certainly be a nuisance in the garden! It's great to hear that you've tried some organic sprays and are experimenting with using DE (diatomaceous earth) as a solution. Ladybugs are a natural way to control aphids but may not survive if they run out of food. Have you seen our video on keep the ladybugs alive? th-cam.com/video/y1rurWP8ydE/w-d-xo.html Another option you could consider is attracting other beneficial insects to your garden, such as lacewings, hoverflies, and parasitic wasps. These insects also prey on aphids and can help keep their population in check. I hope these tips are helpful, and that you are able to find a solution that works well for your specific situation!
@@GutenGardening I was going to say that our ladybugs were indoors in our greenhouse and was sure your suggestions to keep them alive wouldn't apply. Then I watched the video and realized that yes, you can keep them alive indoors in a greenhouse with food other than aphids. I wish I had known this years ago. Now I need to find somewhere to purchase ladybugs again and give it a try. Ladybugs are fascinating creatures. I really enjoy watching their various stages of development. Thank you for your helpful suggestions. I really appreciate this!!!😀
It will be interesting to see how it works. Speed and effectiveness and so on as that looks like quite a group of aphids in a short time. Goes to show just how many insects are eating them in the garden. We occasionally see some 9n plants, but nothing like that.
They take over so quickly! It is crazy to see how just a few can turn into an army in a matter of days. We have seen good results so far with the DE. We are just going to have to stay on top of things to make sure we get them all so future growing seasons aren't effected as well. Have a wonderful day!
First time here, first time video. I just wanted to point out and you might have already changed type of mask. You're using a surgical mask, while they do remove a level of dust they're not designed to stop dust inhalation because an operating room realistically should be sparkling and dust to an absolute minimum. You need a proper dust mask rated for dust obviously. Different masks will fit to a specification so not every mask is the same. I've seen masks differ for protection percentage from US to EU based on their standards and law. Best to limit the amount of dust we breath to an absolute limit. I've seen family friends with COPD and seeing their eyes buldge when they cough a lung up is what makes me so anal about what I wear, use and do. All the best.
Hello Kyle, You are spot on. It was what we had at the time, but it is definitely not made for that purpose. We have no desire to mess up our lungs for sure. Thank you so much for the comment, and for the concern. We hope you continue to enjoy our content and have a fantastic weekend!
Hello Pafford Homestead! We are seeing pretty good results from it so far (in the last two days). Were you using it for aphids or a different pest? I have also heard others who have not had as good luck with it. Thank you so much for watching!
