I was contemplating going with this material to utilize in my future fish room and ruled it out due to the ascetics. This is absolutely brilliant and it looks so good. The best part is how much more affordable it will be and then saved funds can go for other things. Thank so much.
Back in the 60's and 70's we use to use these stands to hold 100's of record albums. We just painted the cinder blocks black and stained the edges of the 2x6's. We never loss a single album.
I am glad you got the black paint on the stands. It's the little touches that make a ton of difference. The entire room looks great.
The fishroom looks great! I use cinder blocks and 2x4's in my fish room. You can dress it up in a lot of ways. If you don't have the ability to cut wood, you can use cloth. Pick out the material you like, cut it to size and hang it. You can nail it up or use curtain rods. I like the ease of assembly and ease of remodel. Only people who have never used them doubt their strength.
I'm about to start a fish room using these stands and was also thinking of using some black cloth to hide everything but the tank faces.
I've watched like 20 videos about these types of tank stands today and yours are some of the best ones. Great inspiration, thanks!
I love how this turned out!! Iv seen a lot of youtubers use these diy stands. One day when we finish our garage we want to make a stand like this. But I think you dressing it up made it look even better. Great video!
I have been in the hobby for over 30 years. I have built stands like these very often and mainly for 55 or bigger tanks. Currently have a 90 and a 40 on these now. Have never had a problem whatsoever with these. Very very strong and durable as well as very economical. Room is looking fantastic there and main focus on your fish now instead of the surroundings. Great job!

Mahalo, that was a great video. I’ll use that concrete block stand. I was afraid of my tanks getting bumped and knocked down but that demonstration made it clear how sturdy it is. Nice touch with the face plate cover.

I just bought a 6 foot long 170 gallon than and I am building a concrete stand for it. Support every two feet should work and I will dress them up as you did, nice work Zenzo.

Love the new look Zenzo. Something people should consider if painting wood for fish rooms is using a mold killing primer like made by Zinsser, and a top coat of mildew resistant paint such as Kilz. That way, should humidity or a leaking tank ever become an issue, you have warded off a significant health threat.

Looks great! I have same type of stands and I painted the wood and concrete blocks with black paint and think it looks good. I have thought about possibly covering the concrete blocks with wood panels in the future.

you could even add magnets with double sided 3m tape and use plywood to make a door for your concrete stand.

Great work , have you thought about painting the exposed sides ? Over all look is ties with the faces.
The painted face boards do give the fish room a classy look for the camera. Not that it strictly needed to be fixed anyway.
The continuous line of tanks around that corner is a definite improvement. Looks fantastic. 👍

Lol! I saw the shaky footage I thought that was the simulation earthquake 😆. I was living in a 2nd floor apt when I experienced my first earthquake and I did not know what was causing the building to sway almost in a circular motions. My dad who is an architect explained the same thing u did about structural codes in those kind of areas and how they’re designed to have some “give” so as to not collapse so easily. 🌱🐟🐌
I took the time to spray paint everything black before hand and mine look fine.
There are a lot of nice display ideas on Pinterest with this type of stand.

I setup a block of concrete with thick wood to display nine 5 gallon tanks and one 10 gallon tank. Very cool. Cost effective. Like the new look. Black is the best. Cheers.
I also paint the blocks, you could paint the side that are visible but it'll be hard with tanks in place. room looks great, huge difference.
I didn't think the exposed blocks looked bad, but I really like this better!
I grew up in Southern California. I've gone through many quakes. Never had any serious issues, even in big quakes over 7.5.
My only concern if those were my tanks Is your long one. It's supported at four corners but nothing half way between. No concerns there with gravity sagging that part? It all looks great.
Batfink All of the tanks have support at least 36” wide. 36” is the widest gap.
Batfink 36” gap at the maximum. No issues with sagging.
I bought my blocks months (many) and 2x4s ago, but didn't like the look, so the 75 and the materials have sat . Now lumber is thru the roof, so i am back to making the DIy w/ blocks, I do like the fact it can be raised up to put another tank under it.
Love your channel. Can you advise me thinking of adding a 55-70 gal rimless and stand not sure where I would buy at good price.
Rimless can be tough. Ask your local shops if you have any.
I realize this is old. So, who knows what this setup looks like now.
Anyway, Zenzo seems concerned that the blocks are visible from the side. However, I must say with the lights & the shadows it creates, I think it looks really cool. Almost planned.

Curious though, are u going to add some type covering above the tanks?? the inbetween areas where lights are hung? Maybe some type of hinged door or{ even black sheets of acrylic cut to size, u could even use acrylic type hinge to be able to open to feed the fish or do maintenance or whatever u need to do}something to cover open areas keeping any light from showing anything but tanks. Anyways, your FishRoom looks more/ organised. Nice work!!
how do you lay the blocks or wood on the wider 20in 24in wide tanks, i would mind building a rack for 2x 48x18x18 tanks for oscars
Hi, is there any chance that plywood will bow from the middle (or anything worse) in time or have you experienced anything negative in years with this build? Especially in case of the build when you put 2 tanks and their corners are not supported by the blocks that put all the weight on the plywood. Thank you in advance.
So u fit the lights between the wood gaps? What if the lights are too wide to fit, do you screw them to the wood up there?
If you're worried about the blocks getting knocked off center, take 2 by 4s or 4 by 4s and stick them running up and down inside the holes which are built into the cinder blocks. A full length board running up and down inside the hole, locks them together.
Looks great my friend, hey so I thought of doing this kind of thing in my “fish room” I only have 3 tanks right now. But maybe if you like the idea you might use it. My idea is to use rare earth magnets counter sunk into my fish rack and metal plates on the wood “dressings” that are attached with 1/4” long screws. I’ll add links and maybe you can picture it. But essentially you would have like 3/8 “ or 10mm rare earth magnets epoxy’d into pre drilled holes only deep enough to make the magenta flush with the wood, the on your doors add small plate hardware for the magnet to stick to and you can just pop them on and off and your doors/trimmings would be magnetic to the frame let me know what your think I can link some stuff to you if your interested in something like that

Would you consider using a veneer plywood vs the usual construction grade plywood? I love the idea of the concrete but want to do something similar like you did but maybe with birch or maple veneer
I think it is doable if you make sure to seal the open edges to prevent any water or moisture from getting between the layers.

Living in the Bay Area my whole life as well. I’m super worried about my new tank and stand during our next quake.
You could just paint the concrete blocks instead of putting painted plywood over them too. I realize yours are already in place, but someone setting up a fish room with this type of stand would pre-paint the blocks before setting up the fish room.

Do you add a middle cinder block on tanks over a certain length? How do you decide when to add a middle support cinder block?

The only people that would doubt the strength of these stands are people that have never used one of these. They’re way sturdier than anything store bought.

Johnny Goldfish I think that’s too wide. Maybe a 6’ tank on top, with two 24” tanks underneath with a center brace.
What cinder blocks did or would you use? My tank is 18 inches front to back.
I just built a 90 and 40 stands. Just used regular cheap 99 cent blocks from Lowes
I understand that. But the Home Depot only had cinder blocks that were 16 inches long. Do they make one that’s 18 inches. I don’t won’t the table for o hang over by two inches
All my stands are concrete block and wood. They are by far the cheapest and they are extremely strong. For larger tanks, I set cinder blocks sideways in the center as a support which also provides rigidity in case there was swaying motion. I used to live in Corona California and we had a earthquake so big that it's sloshed water out of my swimming pool like it was a bowl of soup. If you're going to have a big Quake, good emergency for drainage and good insurance is the only way to go. You can help against small Quakes, but a big one will toss tanks and homes and cars around like toys.
By the way, I think the fish room looks great.

It’s not necessary. I have mine spaced 4’ at the outside edge of each block (so roughly 37” on the inside span). I keep 36” wide tanks underneath my 75s.
Looks legit, you could've also painted all the concrete blocks black. But everything looks nice.

I believe so, if you have support columns of cinder blocks in the middle. I have 36" of space between heavier setups. For an 8' tank, maybe try two center columns for a total of 4 (spaced approximately 24" apart).
Greetings, I have a 75 I need to build a stand for. Would 2x4's be okay rather than 2x6 or 2x8's laying across the blocks ?

I use 2x4s on all of mine. I lay them three wide per block.
Way better than using nails to hold doors use magnets clean no holes also cheap and last alot longer give it ago

Unstable?? Lol I've seen cars and trailer houses sitting on cinder blocks, they're definitely strong enough to hold aquariums. I'm going to use this method to hold my terrariums.
