    I just went through the 6.9 in Hawaii in my greenhouse with a bricks and sticks setup 55 aquariums, it cracked the six inch cement floor slab, the only tank I lost was one that was setting empty on the floor. I lost a lot of water due to aquarium sloshing, but no damage to tanks or stands. And that was less than 5 miles from the epicenter of the quake.

      Wow! Glad you and your family weren't hurt! My ex husband and I spent our honeymoon in Oahu back in 2007. We stayed 2 weeks and fell in love. We both came an inch away from putting in transfers at work. 🤙 On a more serious note, I wish I had watched Cory's video first!🤦‍♀️ I just got done building a 55 gallon stand out of 2x4s and deck nails. lol Only took me 3hrs ! 🤣

    I love this.. its awesome. You do not need a rack of aquariums. I did this with only one aquarium but it looks nice. You can paint the blocks and wood is you want. Looks great.

    Thank you so much for this. I’ve been on a hunt for my 55. Everything just looks so friggin cheap. I just took a stand back. Everything was great till the next morning. The water shifted towards the front of the Aquarium. About a half inch. Had to Break down the whole thing. I was stressed out but not anymore!! Instead of it costing 100 to 500. Now it will cost me around 20-25 dollars!! Brilliant!!

    Revisiting an 60 years old idea! Great !! You could also put a peace of 2 x 4 or a metal rod through the cinder block hols to keep them from sliding while staking aquariums on the shelves. Keep up the good work.

    I have been doing research for a block and board/plank tank stand and have seen some great ideas.
    For a couple $$ more, you can use 2x8x10 wood and not have any space in between like the 2x4's in the video. Also if you want it a little more fancy, you can paint or stain the wood & blocks and totally take it to the next level.

    Great earthquake comments...earthquakes are all about compliance in structures, not rigidity...when I lived in Japan I saw it first hand...all modern buildings there are designed to move and flex...pretty crazy to watch it actually happen. Anyway, these stands would fare better because they are flexible and simple and allow shifting. Good input and exactly right! thanks again!

    One thing I think might be worth a consideration - particularly if you're in an area where the ground moves on occasion - would be to "glue" the blocks together with an adhesive rated for bonding concrete blocks together. It would require a caulking gun and tubes of adhesive. All available at a local hardware store. MTC

    Nice video! I always enjoy watching things take shape. Your stand is rough but simple and strong. I would be most afraid of it taking a large hit from the side topping it over. But it is probably more of a problem in the mind than in practice. It is good because it requires no tools. You have cheap materials though, especially the blocks. The same setup here in Sweden would cost 110 us dollars. :-) So I don't use them, I like woodworking so I build them from wood instead. It is cheaper and often more more space efficient. But you do need both the tools, space and then the construction knowledge. Three areas where this stand excells. I do like the thick 2x4s in the middle. They give extra support when moving the tanks as you say but they are also excellent for mounting light over the tanks(in the middle, thick piece of wood where you can put the screws). With the extra height over the tanks you can use cheap spotlights which will cover faily well when placed at that distance.

    I've long ago stop using cinder blocks for my stands since I live in earthquake country and own power tools, however I still remember the days. I also tend to over construct so the tanks will hold at least 1.5x weight.

    did i really just watch a guy stack concrete blocks for 40 mins.. fml.

  • @keith161
    @keith161 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I used this same method for a a large, single tank. Mine wasn't stacked as high (3 blocks high). This method is simple and very, very sturdy for a tank or a series of small/medium tanks. I believe the aquarium stand is the most underestimated piece of equipment that doesn't get the consideration it deserves as it holds hundreds of pounds 24/7.
    Cinder block supports buildings, it will support your tank. I am just amazed at the thin particleboard stands that shops sell. Particleboard (which will eventually get wet) doesn't hold a candle to solid wood and masonry material.
    I don't live in an earthquake-prone area, but I ask doubters, how sturdy will a pre-fab particleboard stand or a wooden frame stand be in an high Richter earthquake?

    • @paragodful
      @paragodful 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Keith I am doing this for a 300 and a 250 gallon would love to stack them but I am real nervous but might end up putting two separate stands side by side, what size tank did you build yours for and did you use the same dimensions

  • @JediRobin
    @JediRobin 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nice cheap stand. I will be making this. I will be using a bit of silicon between the blocks and also the timber.

  • @eliasvarn1127
    @eliasvarn1127 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I would probably go with wider blocks because that still makes me nervous. Still, very cool. I like how it can fit two 20g or one 55g. That way you could do larger and smaller fish. I would probably paint the blocks and stain the wood too, to make it look attractive and the stain would prevent the wood from rotting. Awesome, especially since there are no tools needed and simple to understand. Personally I want all my tanks to look cool. so i would decorate/plant with substrate... at least a simple aquascape.

    I'm seriously considering a variation of this for my 75g since I no longer trust the stand it came with. I have a couple changes suited better for a single tank vs a rack. To start, I'd use full-size blocks for the extra strength and stability. I'd also stack the blocks at an angle to each other rather than parallel. That way the stand won't wiggle when bumped. Finally, rather than simply lay boards across the gap I'd frame up a deck for the tank, and the sump, to sit on.

    2x4s warp when laid that way. Especially in a humid environment. Stand them on the side , twice the strength and they won't warp.

    Hey Cory-
    I have basically watched all your videos (which are great btw!) and I know in one of them you mention you can use this design for a 75 gallon aquarium rack. Forgive me but I can’t seem to find that video in all your content, is the only difference is using 2x10x10’s instead of 2x4x10’s?

    • @AquariumCoop
      @AquariumCoop  6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      yeah, you essentially need the wider lumber to accommodate the wider tank and keep using the same 16 inch block.

    If my garage concrete is unlevel, are.shims.ok under the cinder blocks?

  • @sasaeteurn

    Hey Cory! Thank you so much for all the helpful tips. I have used your example of using cinder blocks and built a stand for my 300gal tank. I was wondering if you could give me your opinion on something. I have the stand sitting in my garage and my electrical panel is in the garage as well. In your opinion, would the moisture from the tank cause any problem to the electrical panel? It is sitting a few feet away from it. I plan on using a dehumidifier for that room(garage). Thank you so much!

  • @TheWaterBox

    That's A LOT of weight on those stands. If you have an earthquake that can knock them off, then fishtanks are the least of your problems. I was 20mile from Northridge when it hit. It moved my 60gals 1/2 inch on the table it was on which sat in the middle of the room (not against or braced on the wall). I think it was against the wall or braced it would have been worse. Loving the vids, even the old ones Cory!

    Hey Cory thanks for this video. I just build myself a stand like yours but with 2x10x10 instead to hold 75 gallons. I am just wondering do you recommend putting Styrofoam/cork/yoga mat underneath a glass tank with a rim ? Asking cause I'm afraid wood isn't going to give me a true flat surface because of imperfections. Thanks in advance for reply

      It's hard to say, I didn't do it and haven't had problem, but possibly cork or a yoga mat would help some?

    I've been in many earthquakes, you can't do anything if its a 6.5 plus, but 5.0-6.5 needs to be better design than cinder blocks IMO. DIY earthquake friendly strand is easily doable.

    Hey Cory thank you. I’m in my second year of building my room fish room. Started with a metal stand from Lowe’s this one I forget the name But it has black board under it and hold 3k lbs per rack. But now I want more tanks for breeding guppies. Thank you for the info if you can think of something or have a min to talk please reach out to me. Thank you.

      If you stain/paint the wood, how can't this stand last decades?? I have a store bought stand that is 20 years old and still looks and works perfectly.

    If I remember correctly the line on cinder blocks is for more surface area when you cement them together. It's been 20 something years sense I did any actual load barring walls with them so I could be wrong.
    Now I know this is for the least amount of money and still being able to make something that is functional I wouldn't straight line stack for two shelves. I would offset stack and use half blocks to keep things structurally sound. Basically it would be either two full blocks with a half block in the middle or or a half block on the ends and a full block in the middle. This keeps it mire structurally sound and you can actually make a better base for it if you don't want half block on the bottom. Take a full block and turn it inwards so from the side it looks like a half brick, then a full brick the way you have it then like on the front brick have it face in the again a full brick then again a half brick (for a double rack system). But for each layer you add on top of this you will have to use half bricks so you don't have odd bricks with only half load barring blocks.

      I got lucky when the Napa 6.0 quake hit just 15 miles from my apt in 2014 cuz I had to hold on to my 35 gal turtle tank while we both swayed and rocked and I didn't loose it by some miracle. Probably because the tank length wise was facing the pressure waves coming from the west to east is what saved me and the tank! I still am amazed when I think about it. Just last week our apt bldg had to have it's foundation underpinned with steel reinforcements because the quake caused a cycle of subsidence that suddenly got worse due to the torrential rains here in N. California.I got more than 9 lives cuz that was the 10th!Lol

      48tomw, not a good idea. Next time just let it fall! 35 gallon tank falls on you, you're guaranteed to have more problems than earthquake damage..
