      It doesn't matter as long as they're warm. Plants naturally grow outside and the temperature varies. The only time you need to worry about temperature is when outside is significantly lower than the optimum for the plant.

    Thanks for the very helpful video! I have one question, having tried this and utterly failed. :-( Can you please offer some detail on WATERING while the seeds in the peat pellets are germinating in the propagator? At first I worried I'd drown them and then I ended up drying them out. I don't have an innate sense of how much water, how frequent, or how to deliver it (other than, I used a turkey baster after seeing your pipette--but another site mentions a sprayer). Can you help, with detail well suited for an imbecile? Thanks!!

      Do not allow your peat pellets to dry out. Keep the nice and damp but not water logged. i use a pipet to water the pellets. you will need to check on dampness of each pellet pretty much everyday. Pellets in middle of a propigator dry out quick where ones around the edge collect the condensation from the propigator. it's a good idea to rotate to stop the outer ones getting water logged.

    Grew mine with simple jiffy pellets and water. Actually if you had cotton balls just add seed, water it and put in plastic container and it germinates just fine.

    honestly, the best way to plant seeds from my experience is to just plant them with the flesh of the plant it comes from. So like if you wanna grow tomatos, just get some moldy tomatos and plant it in a pot of soil. itll all germinate within days. i assume chilis work the same way. i have seeds i bought online that dont have the flesh. i might just add flesh from another chili just to see if it helps. i think this method works really well because this is how seeds were designed to be planted in nature. the flesh provide the perfect environment for the seeds.

    Nice numbers come up. When you soak your seeds with paper towel, don't be shy to put rooting hormone in the water. If you are into hydroponics, you won't have as tasty of a pepper, but they don't suck, and you can cut the time in WAY less than half. Why all the downvotes? 158 w.t. hecks ?

  • @nuskaha
    @nuskaha 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    When you plant the seedlings on, do you break them out of the peat pellets ,or just plant the whole thing ?

    • @thebountybear3955
      @thebountybear3955  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Just stick the whole thing in a bigger pot and surround with compost mixture as seen in video 2. The roots will push through the white casing of the peat pellet .

      The Bounty Bear me personally i err on the side of dryer than soggy after the seedling has got its first set of main leaves starting to come through, anyhow great video :)
      my way to start them off and this way i get 100% what i plant is to get 4 layers of damp toilet paper, place the seeds in a basic formation, add 1 more layer over the top of seeds to encapsulate them, sprinkle some water off my fingers, put in a freezer bag and seal it, put then on top of my flat screen pc monitor for heat and in a week go back see which ones have started.
      lay the seed tray like you have but fill them with moist compost, gently push down then tear open the bag and pull apart the tissue taking care not to tear the root, place it in the filled trays then add a little more compost...
      you can use my method for almost any seeds, tomato to broad beans to really fine but only use 1 part of the 2ply to cover it as you need to see it when really small seeds :) however its no good for big seeds like mango

    best way to kick start chilli seed is to soak the seed in 0.05% Sodium Hypochlorite solution for 30 minutes.. Miltons baby bottle steriliser is perfect.. the biggest enemy of the young seed/seedling is fungal attack, Milton's solution also breaks down the hydrophobic covering of the seed allowing water to imbibe into the seed quickly, maybe tea does the same thing? dunno.. anyway regardless the trick is to get the seed up and away before fungal attack.

      Me too, scraped seeds out of a bird's eye chilli, into pots of compost on a windowsill, couple of weeks later they started to sprout, now doing very well and re potted into slightly bigger pots, no heating, no propagating, 100% germination success. I live in a house with no central heating. (UK)

    HOW DOES TEA HELP YOUR SEEDS GERMINATE ?!?!?!?!?!?!

    • @thebountybear3955
      @thebountybear3955  10 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Chilli seeds germinate in naturally by passing through birds after being eaten. Tea softens the seed casing like a birds digestive sytem making it easier for seeding to germinate.

  • @meadow-maker

    You could get the same job done and save yourself an awful lot of faffing just by using the sectioned trays with a compost/pearlite mix. You really don't need to position the seeds the 'right way up'. You talk about the birds eating the fruit. Do you think the birds poop them out the 'right way up'? You don't need to soak the seeds anymore than you soak tomato seeds. Why not be scientific, or something close; do half the tray with a cheep seed, one you saved from a chilli form the supermarket or last year. Soak half and put them the 'right way up' and don't soak the other half and bung em in. If you have a significant difference then maybe you'll be qualified to give some advice.

      The Bounty Bear Sorry, I didn't mean to come across that harsh. It's like this; imagine you're using bamboo canes pushed in the ground to show how it keeps away moles. You don't have moles and you've not had moles for years. That isn't proof that the bamboo canes do anything to keep away moles. That's all I meant. Your methods aren't founded in any experimental method, just supposition. I'm trained in Horticultural Science (HND) and though I'm not an expert in Chilli growing I do have 40 years experience in Horticulture and do grow Chillies very successfully. Some of what you're doing is totally unnecessary and you're starting myths because people will think they have to follow what you're doing or they won't be able to grow chillies. They might not be able to get those peat pellets or might not drink tea and they might be discouraged because of it. They might not have a propagator or thermometer and again be discouraged. If you're posting the video to encourage people then you're not having that effect. If you're posting just on an ego trip then, well, I can see why you go Ouch!.
