I think that the main reason so many of the items in the house have no real description was to emphasise that the main character does not have any real connection to what they're looking at. However, I do concede that if that's the case, the dialogue could better express this disinterest. One idea would be to change up the dialogue with repeated interactions, something like this:
    "It's a box"
    "..."
    "..."
    "Another box"
    "..."
    "More boxes"
    "..."
    "What am I doing?"
When interacting with an item, the dialogue box is followed up with a pause, as to indicate that the character may be spacing out. The character does not care about these boxes, but in their melancholy, have taken to blankly stare into spots and let their mind wander. Maybe this could be an outlet to express how the character feels about something else, something more interesting than the boxes and objects in the house. Something like:
    "A cutting board"
    "..."
    "..."
"I wonder if my parents have been to the other world"

    • @fransu7318
      @fransu7318 5 ปีที่แล้ว +14

Yeah, It's probably because that's what the main character sees. Since she doesn't see anything interesting in her reality, She's probably not even interested about the things she's looking at, enough to just going to think that what she's are looking at is normal, Not exciting that she doesn't have to think about anything about it.
I'd really like more description to the things you examine, maybe to make the game a little less boring while you're looking around the house (I haven't played the game yet, so I'm sorry if there's something incorrect.) But I personally think the game only tells you what she thinks ( since she finds nothing interesting in her reality) , and nothing else.

I actually also took notice of the simple descriptors and thought they said more about the character than more descriptors. Her home is a prison. These things mean nothing to her. She’s looking for a distraction, some happiness, or her parents, and all she finds is... a vase. A box. Some shoes.

The naming scheme of the objects seems to me, at the very least, perfectly deliberate.
"It's a box. It's a vase. It's a laundry machine." These ARE the relationships the character has with these items- she sees them as nothing more than they are, which adds insight to the character's overall attitude I feel.

Sad he didn't do that with deltarune, even he admited that his attempts to compare both games really made he WANT to look for the bad things and how toby will never recreate undertale feel again even though, what game creator would want to create a game, then create another game trying to copy the feel of the past game? He was tired of undertale and throwed that at deltarune.

Nifty Little Name I think he wanted DR to convey a similar sense of uniqueness that UT achieved, just in a different way. UT did it through its meta-narrative and deconstruction of morality in RPGS/video games as a whole, which is why it was so impactful to the medium.
It’s a tall order to do it again; not just for Toby, but for any developer. Makes me think we may never get a game like it again, which kinda depresses me.

I like the concept that was mentioned in the extra room. That the main protagonist of the next game wont be the girl, but she probably will be like a side character (party member?) in it. Its gonna be really weird to have this cartoonishly silly character on screen when theres this entire tragic backstory out there that nobody in the game can really learn about because she forgot it.

What up, undergrad music student here. I would have to look at both of the music scores directly to see the similarities, but it seems like the song that plays in the house sounds similar to Cornelia Castle from FF1 because it has a similar melodic contour, but Toby's song is in the harmonic minor key that shares the same tonic (starting note) as the Cornelia castle has relative to its' major key.
Again this is just my best guess from hearing the two side by side in the section that you brought up music.

You description of dreams is fascinating. For me, dreams are similar to what you described, but I’ve been experiencing them in a new way recently. Quite often I’ll dream an entire day, sometimes more than one, where I have control of what I’m doing, without realising I’m dreaming. Basically, imagine a lucid dream but you never realise you’re dreaming, as nothing weird too happens, and you only try to do things you could do in real life. I’d never try to fly in one, as I think I’m awake.
The weird thing about these dreams though is what happens when I wake up. I forget almost the entire thing, but I remember that a day passed in my dream. I believe I actually was awake for this day however, not realising it was a dream. And then I go about my day, this time actually awake, and I’ll do something, normally something I did in my dream, and I’ll have a flash a deja-vu, remember the entire dream, and get really confused as whatever I did in my dream never actually happened. Last week, I lost all concept of what day it was as I dreamt 3 days of life.

Another great review! I actually want to try it right away after watching this which is something I almost never really do aha. On that note, I'd just like to say that I absolutely love your content and the way you present both yourself and the games you talk about.
I'm not sure how to explain it but your words and the way you describe mechanics/themes and such especially when introducing the game always seem to grab my attention. I dunno, it sounds somewhat professional, but also poetic and at times thought provoking; I find myself more often than not, agreeing with you on a lot of points you bring up.
But you also come across as just a dude having fun talking about interesting titles which is a nice change from the usual, heavily scripted or over-the-top comedy reviews aha. Not that those are bad of course, it's just nice to see someone do some things differently at times--
tl;dr I love your content, keep up the good work man!

Because this games world is so small, I feel the developer set the character to always walk, and disabled the run feature. The option to 'always dash' will always show up in the options screen regardless. Hope that helped!

I love games that do flavor text. The early days of PS2 games did that a lot, but one of my favorite games that did it was Parasite Eve 2, which was actually a PS1 game. The first game didn't really do the flavor text so much, but 2 had these really long, detailed and well-written text that either described the object, or also went into the protagonist's inner thoughts and what that object would remind her of or make her think about it. Sometimes they were pretty hilarious, like her whining about the player making her look at a gross toilet stall.

I think a really interesting design point in regards to the demon and color theory is that blue and orange are compliments of each other; blue makes orange pop more and vice versa. While this doesn't mean much to the demon guy, it certainly speaks to the Lonely Girl, as this demon's intervention caused her to move forward and truly 'pop', like how blue pops on orange.

Still doing an amazing job at analyzing a game that deserves to be praised, even if it's just a tiny experience coming from a one person team. I'm gonna try it out thanks to you.

I've been following Temmie for a little while now too, and I loved watching her developing her game. And she is posting stuff for her upcoming project too! I am so in awe of her amazing skills! I want to make video games too, so it's great to have such an amazing artist to look up to and she inspires me! :D

Alright so how about Temmie's next game: Dweller's Empty Path? Sadly it's yet another teaser game, but it's a lot more fleshed out than Escaped Chasm.

6:50 I personally think there is a shift in moods between the two. In Escaped Chasm, the notes are drawn out, and are more melancholy-sounding. Meanwhile, in the other, it is more bright (musically speaking), chipper, and has a faster pace in the main melody. I also think (I think??) that in that piece that you let us listen to in Escaped Chasm here miiiggghhttt be in a minor key? I don't have perfect pitch,, ahah. Minor keys generally indicate a sadder mood or tone. Take Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, for example. The way that you would think of it, that would be major. It is bright, and hopeful. If you were to put it in a minor key, it sounds off. Dreary, even. And that's just one example! And I assume that anyone who is still reading this will know that the same point is for the second piece shown here. Obviously a major key. That's just my opinion though! :)

I dont know if the dude reads comments, but i'm pretty sure his favourite genre is survival horror.
So, yeah. If you're reading this, maybe you could give Darkwood a try. It's a really good horror game that's actually scary (and does not have jumpscares)

I'll give 10 points off the bat for reclusive little girl who escapes her life to explore a different world in her dreams in an RPG maker game.
and *doesn't* commit suicide at the end.
Also yeah, the animation is smooth, didn't expect that in RPGmaker, I've seen animatics in some, like Suits, and Oneshot, but the only time I think I actually saw an animation was at the very end of Jimmy and the Pulsating Mass, and I won't spoil it by going into detail, but it wasn't at this level.

If Chang ever feels like making a short animated series, but needs funding, she shouldn't have any trouble there.
