    I used silk back in the 70’s and love the finish. I’m getting ready to scratch build Chuck Cunningham’s lazy ace, it will be my third. 30 years apart from the last. Perfect model to finish in silk. Thanks for refreshing my memories! Seems not too many people build anymore. Too bad the craftsmanship is turned to the ARFs.

    Unless you are an old timer , some folks won't know the difference between butylrate and nitate dope... Or mixing in talc to seal the wood prior to appying silk/ silk span ...
    I have abandoned the iron on covering as well, back to what works... Thanks for the video👍

    I gave silk a try for the first time in my 20+ years of model airplanes exposure this past week and I must be missing some important detail as my experiments so far are not good. And I consider myself very experienced in terms of scratch building, finishing techniques, covering with silkspan and dope .. so I was looking forward to experiment with silk.
    This is the sequence I have followed so far: Silk came from Dharma trading ( Habotai silk 5mm natural color ), Dope used: Randolph Nitrate for the first two coats on the perimeter of the sample structure and to attach the silk on it, then Butyrate tautening on the open bay. I lay the silk as shown in the video - damp / wet - stretched it good all around the frame, doped it around the frame to attach it .. let it dry. PERFECT so far. Silk dried tight and looked beautiful. My enthusiasm was HUGE at that point. I had discovered something new all of a sudden. The silk was strong and not worried at all tearing it apart when stretching it wet, its pliability around compound curves is PHENOMENAL, light weight .. everything looked PERFECT. I had discovered the perfect covering material for people who enjoy the craft alone (that's me) and don't worry of the extra steps needed to complete such a project ( sealing the weave, filling it etc .. )... THEN DISASTER HIT. The following day I started applying the first coat on the open bay. I used tautening buturate dope, thinned 50%, and right from the very first brush the silk started sagging. I wasn't concerned at this point as I expected this to disappear when the dope would dry out .. NOPE .. I kept applying more coats. NO impovement. Saggy silk / horrible .. The interesting thing was that when applying the dope the silk would seem to "tighten" when the dope was wet .. then horrible sagging when drying ...
    WHAT GIVES ??? This whole experiment started with such a positive note then it "dove south" quickly. I tried two more experiments - one attaching the silk using Sig Stix-It and rubbing it down with a bit of Butyrate dope (thinking that the joints "might" become a bit loose if the dope is pulling hard ) same horrible outcome, I even used Sig and Brodak dope - same results .... I am REALLY frustrated at this point and don't know what else to try ... Any clue please ??? Could it be the silk material ? I used what's called Habotai Silk as I have seen several modelers use that type of silk with beautiful results. Any help would be very helpful at this point. I am even considering purchasing one yard of silk from Sig ( I know it's expensive ) but I want to eliminate the possibility that it might be the silk that's causing me this. Again, any feedback would be very welcome - I love every feature that I have now seen on silk but I must be doing something wrong here. Thank you for your time ..

      the only dope i use is Butyrate. i never thin it. sounds like you have a Compatibility Problem. i have never Mixed Butyrate and Nitrate Dopes, i did make a more in deaf video. th-cam.com/video/igrwZsRP6cE/w-d-xo.html

      @@VampeD4 - checking that video now .. I know about nitrate / butyrate .. butyrate goes on top of nitrate but not the other way around .. I will make another sample practice frame and try butyrate from the beginning ... as far as silk goes do you think this might be an issue as well ? I use the Habotai silk 5mm (from Dharma trading ) do you think I should try another "type" of silk as well ? I will not give up on my experiments on silk as I totally love how silk behaves .. nothing comes close to it ... I will keep posting my results / questions .. Thank you for your time.

    Thanks for the video. I cover all of my free flight stuff with Japanese tissue and Sig dope. I don't like Monokote / Ultracoat for the reasons you mention for my RC planes and want to try silk. Does silk shrink in one direction more than another like tissue does? Do you apply dope to the airframe before covering? (With the tissue we dope the airframe and use thinner to reactivate it during covering).

    • @VampeD4
      @VampeD4  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes. go around the edge with Dope. then get the silk damp. lay it on whatever. pull it tight. then do one edge. then pull on it as you do the other edge. the dope dries fast. and will shrink as it drys. after you put on you 1st full coat and even on the 2cd coat. it will wrinkle. but the 3rd coat will make it like a drum. myself i put on one coat every 12 or so hrs. and it will shrink even.

    How do you trim the excess material and keep it from fraying? I am using SIG Koverall and the frays are driving me bonkers!!! Great video!

    • @heeder777
      @heeder777 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Nate , if you have the patience, cover the bottom first, trimming flush with a razor blade after the dope has set but not cured them press the silk down as shown. I have used plinking shears to get my final cut on the top covering in the same manner then wrap it over to the bottom and finish as shown. Covering in silk is almost an art. Play with a few test pieces on a little stick frame to get the feel.

      just like with all Coverings. you start with the bottom. has to do with air flow. and as in all coverings it will put the seams in a place thats hard to see.

      Nate G use pinking shears, the tiny dimonds wont fray as badly. full size aircraft are covered the same way

    I have been searching the internet to find out how to clean old nitro from a Piper Cub J3 Great Planes ARF. I just puchased this RC from the widow of the man who hadn't flown it for several years and was left in the basement where the nItro castor has become tacky, how do I clean the wings and fuselage with what material that won't ruin the silk covering? And what do I need to do to restore the yellow paint?

    • @larrym.6152
      @larrym.6152 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nothing wrong with super monokote, tough stuff. Looks great, doesn't scratch easily or wrinkle as easily as regular monokote. Ultracote is probably best for beginner's.

      @@larrym.6152 i think its clear that this is not for Beginner's. but i dont know what level they are at. and in meany way's i think silk is easier then plastic coverings. i have planes 20+ years old. i never had to tighten up the covering. and if i do get a tear in it. i can fix it. and you cant see it.
