  • Today’s book is a classic.
It has changed our understanding of metaphor and its role in language and the mind.
Metaphor, our guest explains, is a fundamental mechanism of mind, one that allows us to use what we know about our physical and social experience to provide an understanding of countless other subjects.
Because such metaphors structure our most basic understandings of our experience, they are "metaphors we live by"-metaphors that can shape our perceptions and actions without our ever noticing them.
It is an immense honour and real treat to welcome the author of a plethora of titles including the focus of this episode: "Metaphors we Live By” with the brilliant George Lakoff

Brilliant and inspiring convo! It would be fascinating to hear more about what you think about Paul Bloom’s ideas about empathy (Specifically, his book, “Against Empathy,”….)…

Empathy is a phony liberal shibboleth that means, I'm going to take pity on you, and feel your pain.... but I'm not going to help you. So it's an evil word, and an evil concept. It's a way to take credit for being a moral person, and then do no actual good work or help at all. Bill Clinton made it famous with 'I fee your pain'. And then proceeded to sell out working people everywhere. And we got empathy instead. So to all liberals, stop invoking the word, it only makes you look like monsters.
But George Lakoff is still cool....

It is about how metaphors help us make sense of the world and offer mental models for life.

The point? Prior to MWLB, metaphor was thought to be a mere trope of language having little to do with rationality. Now it is understood to be crucial to how language works and how we think. MWLB changed the linguistic world.
