Cool documentary! I'm a fisherman from Italy and I didn't anybody would catch swordfish this way! Crazy and interesting! Thanks for making the video :)
Not sure if you could answer this, but do you know why some of these fishermen are wearing paper on the side of their glasses? Not sure if it’s an Italian thing or not. Thanks!
@@longloopslad1974 It's typical only of feluca fishermen, in order to avoid the reflections of the sun in the eyes which could disturb the sighting of fishes.
Nino Arena and all his family are some of the kindest and hospitable people I've ever met. And they are great fishermen. Nino un caro saluto a te e tutti voi da Pietro di Arenzano😀
Swore he said it instantly kills them and they don’t fight . And I’m watching him fight it and through out bouys to allow the fish swim till is expires . Maybe I didn’t hear him right .
You heard him right… they told him the fish die instantly and the meat is sweeter because they don’t build up so much lactic acid in the muscle. I had the exact same thought. 15 minutes in and interested to see more catches… Then again… the Italians aren’t known for their adherence to the dictates of the clock, and they’re speaking through a translator that doesn’t have the best (tho still very good!) English. It might have just been “it kills them faster” or an error in translation.
Im watching you since the beginning, you are the reason im fishing now and your content is really good and developing every single video keep up the great work !!
The etymology of the word "Felouka" comes from the Arabic "El Foulke" which means the ark. Felouka is a diminutive of el foulke, meaning a small boat. Flouka is widely used in Algeria and Tunisia. Historical data demonstrate a very close influence of Arab culture and traditions in Sicily, Sardinia and southern Italy.
Southern most tip of Italy is only 61 nautical miles from Africa. If you boat across the amalfi coast you will see the arab style towers from centuries ago
The Swordfish on the west coast of the states get those same parasites. I grew up harpooning Swordfish. Cool video man, it was enlightening and informative.
I worked in a large seafood restaurant in San Diego/Point Loma, and boats would pull up to a dock next to the receiving area of the restaurant and we would unload many species of fish for processing daily. My favorite fish, besides ahi, was swordfish. I was sadden to see these fisherman pulling in what we would have thrown back because it looked 4-5 times smaller than what we used to get. BTW, this was in the mid 70’s.
This was a super nice video bro, felt like I was watching an entertaining fishing documentary, keep up the great work. I’d love to come fishing out there all I ever do is catch catfish at lake mead
Populations of small sized fish very indicative of over fishing. You'd think they'd learn from the destruction of their Blue fin Tuna population. A classic saying from irresponsible fishers and hunters (as the population depletes from their activities), "quick catch it before they are all gone".
I recommend you also practice other types of fishing in the Strait of Messina for example trolling with live bait for tuna or trolling with artificial fish.
While this isn't my type of fishing, but for a commercial operation I like it a lot. This is a much less destructive way to fish rather than the long-liners or nets that can be several miles long and have a tremendous amount of bycatch that gets tossed away not to mention the nets that break off and trap whales and dolphins along with other unintended kills.
I caught a swordfish myself 5 days ago near to Algeria coasts. It was 165 cm long but only 7-8 kg weight. Had the same parasites and also small magnet fish on it's belly. I directly cook it on barbecue. Very delicious 😋
Maybe have a think before you kill and eat, Mediterranean s/fish, spawning population has now declined by 90%....Look after them, Med Blue Fin Tuna have suffered and suffering still the same fate.....
Cool vid. Nice to see the spear used. My sturgeon spear prolly would be better tho. We have to fight the fish under the ice, no bobber. We have never lost a fish we hit.
It doesnt struggle, no stress so they taste better... 5min later we see what that looks like. Its pulling, badly injured, struggles and gets put on a buoy so they can hunt the next one. As effective that may be and i respect the tradition behind it. The time for such practise is over. Just get the fish to the boat, kill it quickly and be done with it.
and they indiscriminately land baby and adolescent swordfish too zero consideration for the spawing patterns of a fish that is already overfished in the mediterranean
Even the boat looks like a sword fish
Naw, me in the morning

Se sei Italiano ed un pescatore non so come fai a non cocoscere la pesca con la feluca.

Yeah, made a comment same as yours. First fish and they are ready with a tether and a bouy - huh.
My thoughts exactly, it’s all a bunch of bs. Just another way of catching fish just not a very ethical one
I use power heads and they kill instantly!
@ kool

It kills the fish immediately 😂
Not really lol
It kills it faster then you would be able to on rod and reel.

Last year I was in one of that Felucas. It was the experience of a life time. We catch a 60 kg swordfish
Amazing boat very cool and I didn't even know that swordfish swam the surface I thought they were only found at depths..
So cool crazy

You should go down to New Zealand and catch real sized Sword Fish
The Atlantic seaboard of North America has the largest population of larger swordfish in the world.
