About Town: Stab's Guide To The Sunshine Coast

- Welcome to the first episode of About Town, a new series from Stab and Summer Bright in which we explore, with gusto, the most vibrant pockets of Australian surf culture. We’re all fond of a road trip, or a weekend getaway; It’s the Australian surf dream. And if you happen to live in Oz, there needn’t be any reason why you should look beyond its coastlines.
It was Stab and Summer Bright’s wish to unfold the secrets of what makes some of our favourite surf towns great: Where to get coffee, where to surf, where to jump off, who to watch out for in the lineup, where to dine, where to enjoy some post-surf suds, and more. And of course, we tapped some local pros to be our hosts.
We chose surf towns that haven’t been overly-documented. For our first episode, we skipped Coolangatta, wonderful though it is, instead looking further north to its lesser known cousin, the Sunshine Coast. Come jump in the 4WD with Mitch Coleborn and Harry Bryant, and let’s get to know one Australia’s most enjoyable surf trip destinations.

Just knowing that there’s a photo of those two legends out there - that they’ve met each other in person - makes living a lot easier.
Love how much less seriously the boys up the sunny coast take themselves compared to the fellas down here on the gold coast

Australians just do the whole surf lifestyle so much better than us. Its what California surfers wish we had. We pay for parking or walk forever, they drive on the beach and set up camp as on example.
We wish. Getting the same here. There are some places, yes, but not generally unless your a long way from town.

@@overanalyzings new zealand has pumping surf around the country and no people. Most of new zealands best breaks are back onto farm land or Bush and rugged coastline. Alot of waves gotta get to by boat or jetskis = no people
I grew up in Wurtulla- left when I was 20 returning when I’m 40 after living in Europe way too long-can’t wait!!

Recently moved from sunny coast to mid northern nsw, no regrets. Grew up on the sunny coast, 25years changed this place so much. Still good waves on their day but the crowds are thick and furious considering the quantity and quality. A few lesser surfed reefs and banks can keep you sane but all in all I'm getting uncrowded sessions with nobody around at better waves. So long sunny coast and good luck to anyone trying to score anything without the swarm of kooks.
And i bet where you are now gets far more swell.
I'm sure these sort of video's with "rad crew" wearing Greenough haircuts and cool tats will fix the crowd problem at the sunny coast.

Back in the 70s early 80s i loved going up the Sunny Coast as it was nice and quiet.
Then the developers discovered it and now I prefer the Gold Coast and down to Byron but it is also going down the toilet!!!
Its gold coast's hippie cousin, its pretty fun still and you can get your own little breaks to yourself and your boys.
Do you have any advice or tips a young person wanting to move interstate and study in the Sunshine Coast? What do you when a cyclone comes? Is it a secure place living there?

LADYFINGERS Noosa North Shore up the end of the next to the lighthouse. Its a bit of a mission to get there, gotta catch a ferry then drive down the beach for 30min ish. The entire strip of beach has got no cell reception except for when youre up at the lighthouse. Great spot for camping.

does a little docco about the Sunny Coast waves, only talks about the coffe for half the run time, and then shows a 1 sec wave out of a rock........
for those watching this and who dont live on the Sunny Coast, we do have waaaaaay more waves and points, and long waves, and beach breaks, and any other type of awesome points not even featured/mentioned here. They arent "secret" either, so no idea on the why focus the docco on one beach break wave right on the south edge of the Sunny Coast..... So disappointed of this film. Its like talking about the Gold Coast, but only showing a wave in Main Beach/Surfers Paradise
