    Hi I like your videos and this time I wanted to check if i was missing anything about the way I shoot video. Personally i believe Movie silent mode mode is the MOST important function that allows hybrid shooting, it remembers the video settings without changing ANY of the dials before starting recording. By using that function correctly you only need to turn the dial to video and thats it. The way you have shown i believe is the most complicated and cumbersome. Rgrds

    Around 04:00 I understando you can enable auto-iso but you cannot use auto-iso on movie mode, can I have a better explanation? is it possibile to set fixed shutter speed, aperture and auto iso range to accomodate little light change in the scene, even on manual movie mode? On my G80 can't do that, and also can't use exposure comp, frustrating.

    • @MaartenHeilbron

      This ability - making EV adjustments in manual exposure mode while AutoISO is on - is a fairly recent addition with most manufacturers. One question regard to what you're doing at 12:34.
    I'm finding my exposure is consistently crushing the blacks--shadow settings are too low--even after I've set the shadows at -2.
    It there any other way to correct his in-camera that you know of.
    I use the X-H1 a LOT---but i've never been able to solve this issue.
    I really love using this camera for video--except for this one issue. I even get the problem in Eterna.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not having that issue, and I also shoot quite a lot under widely varying circumstances. I use Eterna (DR 100 and 400) as well as chrome, usually as I said in the video with shadows and highlights at -2. In fact, I usually have to make a (very small) adjustment to bring the blacks down to 0 (referencing FCPs waveform) so they don't look slightly grey.
      Not sure what to suggest, I know you're an expert videographer, with a good handle on histogram, so can't begin to imagine what I might be doing differently.

    • @avarmadillo
      @avarmadillo 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MaartenHeilbron Maarten, thanks so much for your response. I've been off and on again with the X-H1, mainly because I've been working on learning the Nikon Z6 and reorienting my self to the GH5. I've finally come around to think it's a really great camera--but shooting non-native lenses I'm compelled to shoot with a speed booster--and get great results--at least as far as I'm concerned.
      I'm going to give this another shot with the X-H1 and pay close attention to my histogram. I really, really, really wish these camera companies would include a waveform. I mean, how hard would that be?!?!
      All this reminds me--last winter I did this video with the X-H1, using Vivaldi's "Winter" from the Seasons. If you can spare 3 minutes give it a glance---LOVE the X-H1--a camera that has gotten a raw deal IMO.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for sharing that video - lovely images, great colours. If there are two things that I'd love to have its 1) gain instead of ISO (for video anyway) and 2) waveform - you're right, it's so much easier (at least for those of us who are familiar.

    • @avarmadillo
      @avarmadillo 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MaartenHeilbron I agree. I don't see that waveforms take all that much more processing than histogram. We video people should be able to choose at the very least. It wouldn't kill them to give us a few videocentric options.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The videographers who are serious enough about video to demand and use waveforms buy cameras that include this feature, as well as other capabilities appropriate to their craft. Except for crash and burn shots (the camera is likely to be damaged while getting the shot) they don't bother with cameras like this. According to my dealer, the most popular camera is the Sony A7 series, he says that production crews will regularly buy a bunch for this purpose.

    Hey Maarten, thanks for your suggestions! Curious if you have some answers or thoughts on this concern of mine. Everything on X-H1 says it can record up to 15 min clip internally but when I record it breaks up the recording session into clips that are 5:18 in length. That's with 4k and 1080p. The 4k clips are about 4.14 GB and the 1080p clips are 1.34 GB. Why are they doing this and why is no one mentioning this? It's very inconvenient for recording audio and video separately and syncing those. I have to sync 3 clips to one audio file now or stitch those 3 clips together and sync the audio file to it. I read somewhere that it's limited to 4gb files but that can't be true since the 1080 files are the same in length but only 1.34GB. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Why are you having to sync the clips separately? Once they're on the timeline, you should need to sync only the first one and the rest will fall into place. That's a process that works for me. However, please do update your firmware, as this is an issue that's been addressed in the latest upgrade (v.2.0). I believe it was originally implemented as a solution to accommodate SDHC cards, but SDXC (ie all cards 64GB and over) didn't have this file system limitation.
      Hope this helps.

    Thanks for your efforts. Your style of delivery is refreshing and not over the top like so many. As an amateur filmmaker, I am loving this camera, complete with all its quirky ness. I recently bought the x-h1 plus batt grip. As I only have two of the “s” type batteries, my third Fujifilm batt gets consumed at an alarming rate compared to the newer type. I use more or less the same settings as you, except my personal film sim is Pro neg hi. I have noticed that when I first press the shutter release, exposure in the EVF and in the actual recording takes an initial dip. Within a second or two, exposure comes back to what I had set. Is this normal with other users. Kindest regards. Melbourne, Australia.

      @Bangus56 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maarten Heilbron I’m so sorry not to have replied to your question earlier. My only excuse is that I am touring Ireland at the moment and must have missed your reply. I understand that this is not a “how to fix it” forum. I was making comment in order to see if it’s just me that is reporting the “exposure” issue or if others had experienced it.
      But to the question, I have set up 24fps in the movie menu, and have the shutter speed dial set to “A”. Even if I ser shutter speed manually, the issue still happens. However, what I have discovered is that, if I set the ISO dial manually ie a set ISO of 200 for example, when I release the shutter, the exposure dips, then recovers to a stable level. This is in both the EVF and during playback, resulting in the first few seconds of footage unusable.
      But here’s the thing, if I set my ISO dial to “A” (auto ISO ) then the exposure dip does NOT happen!
      I would have thought that pre setting the ISO and shutter speed as well as aperture would results in a fixed exposure that would not change on shutter release.
      Now that I know what’s going to happen, I can make allowances for wastage of the first few feet of film 😜, but that seems to be not the normal way of videoing. Hope I haven’t wasted your or other viewers time on this, but perhaps can get other users feedback, as in 50 years of photography and recently, video, this is the finest camera I have owned. Kindest regards and thanks in advance. Richard.

I know this video is over a year old, but did you, or any one reading this comment, ever experienced bad audio with the battery grip audio output? I tested 3 different headphones and as soon as I go over volume 6 I get bad distortion and noise as if the sound is clipping BUT the sound is recorded perfectly clear. It must be an issue with the pre-amp of the battery grip. I found very little on the internet about it, maybe it's my grip that is faulty, but I don't want to send it in and be told that Fuji can't reproduce the issue. If anybody has any info on this, please let me know. Being not able to monitor interviews properly is very annoying.

    Hello Maarten, I'm here again.. I watched this video and the one about X-T3 settings.. I'm here to ask if you are you still using X-H1 instead of X-T3 to record your video, and why, considering x-t3 have more option also about internal recording and nor only All-Intra or H265 settings; seems to be more video oriented than X-H1 at now, and thinking about why prefer x-h1 over x-t3 considering ibis can be useless in most situations on tripod, also you need grip for longer clip, thank You :) don't know if you changed your gear by the way.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am still using the X-H1. Mostly because I don't feel a need to upgrade for what I do. For me, in body stabilization isn't a requirement. I use either a tripod or a gimbal when shooting video. Yes, the grip is needed, but I have one, so it's not an issue. If I were going out tonight to buy a new camera, it would probably be the X-T3, or with a bigger budget, the A7R IV - even though its video bit rates are low.

      There is no question in my mind that the X-H1 (or even better the X-T3) will provide higher quality images than the G7. Although the kit lens is suitable, I suggest that for better quality you shoot with Fujifilm's prime lenses or the XF16-70. That said, the key to quality video isn't necessarily the camera, it's the lighting - make sure that you have good lighting when you are recording. If you can have only one "pro" on your video team, I'd choose lighting over camera.

    Great video as usual. I'm disappointed though in Fuji for allowing a major (to me) issue such as the camera stopping recording video when a battery dies (even with the grip).
    I was recording interviews a couple months ago and luckily the subject saw the tally light go out and alerted me that something was up. I was busy asking questions and was not really watching the camera.

    • @MaartenHeilbron

      Right, you'd think this would be an easy fix. For the X-T3 it can be USB powered as long as you have a USB-C PD type charger or battery (they're pretty new and kind of pricey, but less than the grip.) BTW - Fujifilm has not yet been willing to lend me the grip, which probably means they're having some issue.

      I would not consider either IBIS or OIS to be a suitable solution for video, except for a little assistance for a non-moving handheld shot where you have a very steady position. Panning and IBIS are not compatible (as the camera is trying to fight the motion) so it should be turned off. I sounds like you need a gimbal, which will give you steady video for those situations (with the camera's stabilization turned off).

      Did you? Always ask yourself if the shot needs AF - if I can use manual I do. For most scenes, the camera to subject distance doesn't change enough to warrant AF. If you are using 30fps and 1/60, a slightly faster shutter speed will minimize the blur for pans. For rolling shutter effect (ie vertical lines are bending, try a slower pan or shoot in HD which is less susceptible.
