@@dalekay9ine It might be reverb but the true "Punk" ethic of do it for yourself was alive and well in the Gang of Four - listen carefully to Love Like Anthrax from the featured EP and you can hear a technical explanation of how the track was recorded - the subliminal message being "if we can do this, so can you - don't wait for the revolution to come to you, make it happen through your own actions?"

I've been listening to the band again because those guys came up in my program design class. I almost made a comment but the interview my prof showed us included a shoutout to the band so I didn't have to say anything lol
Brings back my time in London living in Camden in the 80's . In a band, dressed all in leather like Marianne Faithful with my motorbike an RD 250 LC yamaha. . Happy days!
Saw them live at the LIT CLUB in Hartford, CT in 1980/81... blew me away... they may have had the best recordings of that AWESOME ERA. Meet you in the REAL mosh pit my slam dancing brothers and sisters!
The retail angle of the lyrics is amazing: "Damaged goods Send them back I can't work I can't achieve Send me back Open the till Give me the change You said would do me good Refund the cost You said you're cheap but you're too much."
Reminds me of Shakespeare Sonnet 87: Farewell! thou art too dear for my possessing, And like enough thou knowst thy estimate. holy fucking shit! - thanx for the upload! I have not heard this version since I 1st heard it in a club, Harrah, in NYC, before the album Entertainment came out. what a great blast from the past for me.

Ahhhh,..I remember the day,.......a band of my youth!!!
Just to clear the air, this is one of three songs on Go4's first release, this EP on Fast Product tail end of '78. The other two: 'Armalite Rifle' & 'Anthrax' (truly a mind-bender at the time). They'd re-record all three for their EMI debut LP 'Entertainment!) in '79. And, they were absolutely stunning live. Props to all; miss Andy. Like a brake-free hot rod on an open highway. He just went for every lane he could and filled it with joyful noise and boundless human energy.
absolute brilliance! why can't we get more recordings like this? the popularity of this music could kick that xfactor shite into the furthest orbit possible!
Seen them back in 1985-6 in San Francisco in a bar, it was a fucking awesome show! They really kicked ass! I had a brain fart trying to remember this bands name.
@veiolex ... Have to agree with you there ... I lke the album version, but this has an extra dynamic that lifts it to an even higher level ... so much energy and urgency about it ... Cheers, Wayne
Actually, all three songs form ''Damaged Goods" EP first appeared on Fast Product's ''The First Year Plan" various artists compilation LP, back in 1979. "Mutant Pop" compilation was, basically, "The First Year Plan" for US and Canada territories - renamed, with new LP cover and slightly different track listing (one single from Mekons and one from The Flowers, instead two singles from Mekons on original compilation). "The First Year Plan" was reissued on CD in 1993, renamed "Rigour Discipline & Disgust" and with bonus tracks from some other Fast Product's singles and EPs.
My favorite version of this song. Can't beat that "recorded in the bathroom" sound. Amazing.
It's called reverb bud.

Recorded in the bathroom? I don't get it. How does it sound like it was recorded that way?
I agree. LP version though very similar sounds a little cleaner, and is a tad faster. Paradoxically, i think this rocks harder!
This song has: an amazing bass line, super cool drums, fantastic lyrics, awesome guitar, and is one of the greatest songs ever.
Genius. That guitar. That voice. That brilliant cheap pristine loneliness.
Peter Bainbridge forgetting the sick bass intro?

It's the reverb, the studio album version sucks, it just sounds so forced but they still don't get the point across, ya know what I mean?
@@leo8566Repo Men have got the bass
Timeless classic ,one of the best songs ever made
Googled "Gang of Four" (programming book), but found this instead. No regrets.
I bow with respect.
I've been listening to the band again because those guys came up in my program design class. I almost made a comment but the interview my prof showed us included a shoutout to the band so I didn't have to say anything lol
RIP Andy Gill - you fired me up and kept me asking about everything during my 1970's grammar school education
Wouldnt associate a grammar school education with the Gang of 4
@@jonathanhadley2555 A lot of punk bands came from backgrounds like that, see the Pop Group

Still as good as when I heard it on the Peel show all those decades ago.
“Your kiss so sweet. Your sweat so sour”.
I once had a sergeant when I was in the Army call me the title of this song. I'm starting to think she was absolutely spot on.
It’s been seven years. I hope the change has done you good.
That's really sad. I hope you are a survivor and on the road to recovery.
One of the best songs ever written in the new wave /punk aera, all falls in place here in a magic way!
I just want to say this is easily in my top 10 singles of all time.
RIP Andy. Your playing confused me. Then consumed me
Amen to that
Most definitely.

Holy fuck, thank you Internet for bringing me this band
it was great then, and it's great now.
Monty Hale they're so amazing live, if you get the chance you have to see them
saw the original entertainment line up in atlanta. they were incredible.
I saw the newest lineup last saturday. Still incredible. Their new vocalist does them justice.
yeeeah !
30 years later and they still rock
Use to own this back in the day , played it till it wore out .... Good old days , cant beleive im still alive x
One of the best eps ever, thanks Andy.
Every band that's big nowadays on college radio owes to bands like these.
saw 'em live in Sydney late last year
what a great band
walked away from the gig - going "oh yes"
Reminds me of when music was Great and also when there was a Great in Britain.
I didn't know this slower version... really cool...
This is the studio original and IMHO the best version....the cleanest , most pure.
Right, this is my first time hearing this version.
Daniel Werneck a lot more funky imo
This is the 7" single version released October 13th 1978.
This has so much more of a rock feeling than the album version. It's just great.
Gabriel Góes sounds like band practice

RIP Andy Gill!
I can only imagine that if they'd been out in the 90s they would have been HUGE! So ahead of their time.
Literally every version of this song sounds so good
it’s perfect any way you look at it
Pure Genius. I love you Andy and I hold you in my heart
I like the people complaining about poor audio quality on a youtube video. This is Gang of Four we're talking about, not Don Fagen.
As a person who is not from the UK, it took me a while until I understood the link between the lyrics and the name of the track.
Its ok its brit ironic honesty
never too late to discover a great band, mitici!!
one of the best songs ever...so glad I grew up on this thanks to my sk8 background
I thoroughly enjoy playing the first 25 seconds over and over and over again. Needs to be loud, obviously. Try it for a bit.
ITS SO MUCH GROOVIER AUGHHHHH I WANNNA DANCE AUGGGHHHH
It's anthem- worthy, yeah it's an anthem for late 70's/early 80's angst, that's how important this song is.
Martin Hyizna I love your avatar. Clockwork Orange was a classic movie 😁
So glad I had a chance to the them live. RIP Andy.
I 💙 this song, I play it everyday

Another great band that was under appreciated in their day. Gotta see...Urgh A Music War!!
Recorded at Cargo studios in Rochdale - one of the reasons that DAF recorded their first single there.
My old band recorded at Cargo in 1979. Same engineer - John Brierley. Cargo was a favourite with a lot of Scottish bands.
I think this is the version I heard in NYC club Hurrah and apeshit crazy in love with it
If only there could be music like this nowadays
why? It's 40 years old. In point of fact, loads of bands currently try to sound just like this.
You should listen to Fontaines D.C. and Idles
Geweldig, mooie tijd en het blijft mooi!
Brilliant upload, mate ... hadn't heard this before, and really enjoyed it ! ... Wayne
I love these English post-punk bands from the late 70's/early 80's.

This version should have been on their debut album. There was absolutely no valid reason for them to record a crappy version for their debut album.
