They perfected the LS in the 04-06 model years. It went downhill afterwards. I own a 04 LS430 with 160K miles. Been owning it for 7 years, but still brings a smile to me every time I drive it. These older LS vehicles have an ageless design.

Toyota actually had an entire department just designing the layout under the hood so it looks visually appeasing. The amount of effort they put into designing the 1st generation LS400 is simply beyond comprehensive. There is a nice book called "The Lexus Story" by Jonathan Mahler, if you're a Lexus fan it is highly recommended.

1994 with 140k, work at a Lexus dealership and this is my favorite car I’ve ever owned. The quality is unmatched.
Only complaint, long road trips that seat is not as comfortable as it seems, maybe the springs are a little worn but that’s acceptable as it’s 26 years old lol

My son bought one 1995 LS400, 265,000 miles. I helped him fix it, I didn't know what it was really. I now appreciate it way more after he beat the crap out of it. I figured this thing held up to his abuse. He didn't want the car anymore, he wanted a car with stick. After I got the Lexus shop manual WOAH!! I appreciated it much more now. The Nachamici with CD changer, the cigarette lighter in all the doors, the HEAVY doors that can laugh at being T-Boned in an accident. They were not worthy to drive this car. I fixed the PS Rack Pinion, fixed front end worn out parts, put Michelin's on there and it is the best ride ever. Nothing comes close. I saw one t-boned and the guy was still driving it around

I drive the 97 model as my daily driver, turning 200,000 miles. Your review is pretty spot on-i get questioned why don't I buy something newer- you simply can't explain. A few minor items, my radio backlight is out but keeping it stock is important as I get closer to "her" being a classic. The ride is beautiful, quiet and comfortable with plenty of horsepower. The sporty luxury sedan that started the craze is the only way to describe it!

im 20 years old and i just picked one up for 2k! its so amazing to drive! my family is a huge lexus family(for context I bought a 2012 isf when I was 17 and drove it daily). I bought this car with the intention to commute with it and I absolutely love it! Ive never driven a sedan this big before but when I drove it home after buying it I couldn't help but smile! a true classic.
the interior of the car is one of my favorite features of this car. everything is just solidly built! Build Quality is high I agree with you. its really quiet. (recorded at 64db).
I also used this car to drive some of my friends around and my friends love it aswell. Coming from an ISF, my friends were quite surprised when they saw the car i had just bought but quickly realized why as soon as they start riding in it.
Great review this car deserves its place in history!

Probably your most important review Kevin. And I'm writing this comment before I actually had the opportunity to view the entire review. You are basically driving the vehicle that is genealogically connected to the 1989 LS 400 model that started it all. I viewed a retro video review on Motorweek for the LS400 that came out in 1990 and was absolutely amazed by the amount of technology that was present in the model, even more so than in my 2008 Honda CRV, a car that is 17 years newer. And you know the technology in any classic LS 400 is still working. Thanks for the hard work to make this (& other reviews) possible.

    Hey bro,
I grew up loving these old school big bodies, especially the LS mainly due to their reliability.I recently purchased a 99 LS400 with 190,000km (I'm from Canada). The craftsmanship and ride quality is second none. Not to mention, the feeling of owing one of the first LS generations is exhilarating. I would also like to add that I watched many of your ls videos and am glad that I was able to finally locate and purchase one at a very low price. Your videos definitely gave me confidence to purchase my 99 LS. Keep up the good work!

I still have a 1992 LS 400 same color as yours but inside is gray . I am the second owner since 1999.It now has 350,00 km (217,479 Miles) I never have any major problems with it. I only changed 2 driver front window motors (bought from Ebay) and installed one alternator ( Brushes) .Timing belt, water pump, belt pully, tensioner changed at 300,000 km . I love driving it everyday and to every where. It's a very solid and reliable car, drives so quiet and lots of power on the freeway. It can easily last another 10-15 years. It is one of the best built car ever. Your video is the best to explain anyone never driven one. Thank you for sharing :) Really appreciated.

I have a 1990 LS400, in silver with the gray 2 tone and gray interior, gold emblem package, nakamichi sound system, 6 disk, it was loaded. 187k miles and only one owner before me, garage kept grandma owned so it is absolutely immaculate inside as if it just rolled off the showroom floor. I love the car, it is so buttery smooth, the boxy 90s styling is so classic and yet still looks modern! Look up a 1990 Toyota Camry.....that same exact vehicle is from the same year, and technically same manufacturer....insane! Amazing cars man, I will never get rid of my LS!

I had a 1991 LS400 for 9 years. I bought it in 2002 for $6,900. It had 106 k miles on it when I bought it. Sold it in 2012 for about $1,400. It had 190 k miles on it when I sold it. The passenger side window stopped working by the time I sold it and a few other things that I didn’t get fixed. I was ready to move on. Loved that car. It was brown, but I loved it. That was (2012) when I bought the car I currently have now. 2002Lexus LS 430. Bought that one at 102 k miles on it and currently have 182 k miles on it now. I can’t say enough about Lexus. Back in 1998 my friend came over with a Lexus LS that he bought for his mom, he came over to show me, and I’ve been hooked ever since.

96 with 220K miles, great car but warning, when it starts breaking be ready for some headaches, for instance the starter is extremely hard to replace. Have replaced many many parts now over a couple years with the most recent being the ECU. Not sure if I'll hang on, but for sure when its running its a spectacular car.

I used to have a picture of it at the back of my classroom. One day a student asked if I had bought my Lexus yet? After pulling out my Lexus key the whole class got up running to the parking lot to see Mr. A's new Lexus. I will never forget that moment. The car now has "collector plates" on it which allows for cheaper insurance. It still gets positive attention from the public.

I had a '96 LS400 from 2016 until last May. I put 40,000 miles on it going from 120k to 160k when I sold it. It was a great car. It was black and with some OZ wheels, it looked similar to Christopher's Lexus.

I own a 1998 LS400 with 271,500 miles. It can still pull and gets good gas mileage for a v8. I usually can get around 27ish highway and about 22 combined. Even in the city it still gets 18 mpg at the worst. It's been babied its whole life thankfully so its held up well. It is definitley the best car I've ever owned. Only thing it will need that I know of is new bushings or something in the suspension. It rides like a dream but you can hear a pretty good thump if it hits a hard bump. Still a very comfortable, smooth, quiet ride. Love these cars!

Any car, regardless of make, model or cost , is going to need rubber bushings in suspension components after 271,500 miles. That's farther than a trip to the moon!

The LS400 basically changed my life. I got a 1992 Camry as a hand me down... the 3rd gen that has the similar bubble glass and overall shape of the sloped c pillar. But the gen 3 was built in the influence from the gen 1 LS400. And the gen 4 Camry, while still tremendously well built, wasn't quite as LS400 emulating. Well I had a 1992 Camry 5sFE XLE with midnight blue leather. I could not believe the way this midsize family sedan rode. It was unbelievably smooth and quiet and no modern BMW or Mercedes I rode in could replicate that feel. That's when I decided to become an automotive engineer, just to understand the physics of how Toyota did all this. Needless to say, it's hailed as "The best engineering standards in the world" and even the aerospace industry emulates it.

Everything works from heat in 5 mins auto climate heated front seats in a minute rear wiper and washer fluid work all windows up down, it's just as good as a new SUV car, it's very solid. I drive it anywhere too

The torque for a 1990 LS is 250 not 260 ft-lbs ( 340 Nm in proper measurements ) and the wheels were 15-inchers. I bought one in 1999 for $15k and changed the oil for 120k miles. I sold it to my dealer service advisor in 2012 when he found out I was selling. I miss it a lot.

That's what has happened to me at two out of three garages I visited, after I first got my 1997 - the mechanics asked me if I was planning on selling it. I'm in my 80s, so that was a logical conclusion. I said, "No." each time. "I just got it." Actually, no owner of this car ever sold it. Their estate did, after they died. I bought it from the estate of the second owner and the records show he bought it from the first owner's family. Apparently, Lexus could have given all three of us a 'Lifetime Guarantee'! You don't see that very often.
