This is a great reminder that no rule is universal, and we don't minimize for it's own sake - we have REASONS. This video reminded me realize that my goal is simplicity and ease of daily life. And realizing that takes perfectionist pressure off my mind!!
For example: I keep a dedicated extension cord for my sewing machine, and another for other uses. "Minimizing" to one would add fuss to my life, not reduce it. Similarly
I will always keep my inexpensive tableware for 12. I LOVE entertaining, and keeping a full shelf of dishes means it's easy to do what I love and not worry about breakage.
Stocking up on pantry goods is more efficient (time and money) and removes the mental clutter of frequent shopping... but only because I have the luxury of storage space.
Keeping clothes in resale-ready condition is too much work for me. I reduced my closet to make dressing easier and de-emphasize shopping. A life I love includes the freedom to risk a grass-stain.

Hahaha I absolutely love how you put that! 👌 I feel like we have a similar way of applying minimalism 😊
      Have a lovely day!

I absolutely loved this book, but definitely agree with you on these points. Particularly on stocking up. I had FINALLY gone minimalist on the pantry front when the pandemic started, and everyone started to panic buy. It was extremely stressful, as the kids and I all have severe dietary allergies. Thankfully I have good cooking skills the ability to create recipes on the fly with excellent success rates. But even so, it was challenging. Never again will I go without an emergency pantry stash 😆 I also invested in a portable gas cooktop this season, to add to that emergency stash. We do have natural disasters here, and have been left without power for days on end before. Minimizing our possessions gave me the space to be able to store that, and that is an item that's giving me peace of mind.

Haha that's definitely an uncomfortable situation 😅 I always had a bit of backstock, but when the pandemic first hit I realised for the first time that it was actually super useful! I love that you were able to manage with a bit of creativity 😃❤

I agree with all the points except the nest. When I force myself to dump a lot of stuff, I never feel bad about it, because empty space feels so much better than shelves full of stuff.
But his book is not a bible, it is a guide.

Where I live stocking up is essential, we have days even up to a week where we cannot get out because of heavy snow falls over days or extremely cold temperatures.
I like to eat out, but I like to have a friend over for tea and a treat. Just to catch up with our news, but also to relax.
A classic wardrobe with good quality clothes, whether new or second hand is the best economy.
I do keep things that are very beautiful and give me pleasure to look at.
I wouldn't scan photos, I like to handle them and think about the people's faces captured in that little slice of plastic and paper.

I have this book on my bedside table, next in line after I finish my current book.
My mom (gone 24 yrs now) made books of photos for my brother and me. I also have books of relatives’ photos, and I found a story one of my ancestors wrote about my great-grandfather in Ukraine. I have my mom’s cat lamp, and music box. Digital doesn’t work for me on any of those.

I can totally imagine that! Definitely treasure those beautiful books! The lamp sounds super cute too! 🥰

Perhaps the authors perspective on minimalsm is based on living in a city.

    • @Delala

Yes, I think so too! He lived in Tokyo when he wrote the book 😇 I can image that's a whole different lifestyle 🤗

I like that you took a different perspective in this video and shared what you disagree with goodbye things. Can relate to a lot of what you said. Although I like the idea of seeing the city as your personal floor plan I also agree that hosting dinners at home (or being invited at someone's place) is hard to beat 😍

Delala, I must tell that I am entirely impressed by third stage of Fumio Sasaki Minimalism. It was indeed the most impressive phase of this minimalism. It always proves a more precise layout in the life, getting rid of redundant stuffs and wastage, discerning the facts, not squandering your possibilities by purchasing some things. It is really significant to espouse this modus vivendi. It will undoubtedly widen your horizon in order to formulate such a viable modality. Best wishes and greetings from Turkey!

Thank you so much for the kind complement! It's nice to hear you're so passionate about minimalism as well! 😁🙌

@@Delala Minimalism totally enables everyone to be far more regular, quality, frugal and mindful in the life. I had watched any other minimalism videos previously. Those had influenced me in a positive way in order to contribute to the personal development. It smoothly expands my perception concerning this affair.

I agree with your observations. Also because I live in the countryside too. My son however lives in the City and he again would agree with Fumio's viewpoint!

Ofcourse everybody is different and that beautiful ❤ different living situations play a huge role.
I think if I were to live in a city, I would probably not stock up on items. But I think I would still feel the same about the other points 😇

I agree with your disagreements. He is a single guy in Japan, so I can see all of those ideas working great for him. Loved your comments on having people over for dinner. So true! If you really want to have a nice chat with people, a home setting is more conducive for that. The big idea is whether having something adds value to your life or not.

It’s funny, but the first thing about not stocking up is actually how I live now. I used to stock up on food, but I’m so bad at remembering what I have that most of it always spoils. The only other thing is the digitizing things. I have pictures of stuff organized in different folders in iCloud to make it easy to find when I’m feeling nostalgic.
Fumio seems like a hardcore minimalist that lives with dedication to the aesthetic when it might not be as realistic for someone living in a family environment or just with pets.

    • @Delala
      @Delala  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Haha it's funny how different method work for different people ☺
I totally agree that living with family and pets automatically brings more items into your home. You literally need more of everything; kitchen stuff, clothes, jackets, shoes, closets.. you name it 😅

I loved (LOVED) Goodbye Things, it had a major impact on my life. But it was written pre-pandemic. So, there's that. I don't go to restaurants anymore just because of all the influenza, covid, and all the nasties going around and people here are not considerate.

You have to realize he's writing about his perspective from JAPAN. Apartments there are TINY. It makes sense that he can't host people in a 200sq ft space, or have a couch, etc. It makes sense from that point of view.

My dear ,it IS very easy to critize . This gentleman IS Japenese ,he lives in Tokyo.
Take what suits you in his Book and leave what does not suit you.
And be carreful when you choose your word when you express yourself.
I am myself French ,live next to Paris .
And his Book had such an impact on me.
I start to see" Things and Objects " differently and it help me to move forward, which IS the most important.
Stop using words: Totaly wrong, and worst .
And what about You ? Are you perfect ?
