- It was a sequel to an incredible arcade and Turbografx-16 game, but was it enough to satisfy fans?

Episode Notes:
1. Captured on the Mega SG.
2. The difficulty settings are also called different things between the Japanese and western release.
3. Splatterhouse received a 3D update in 2010. It was critically panned. Of note, Splatterhouse 1, 2 and 3 were unlockable in that release.
4. The Japanese version is a genuinely difficult game. I can beat the US release fairly easily after a few tries and the passwords backing me up. You get just 5 continues in the Japanese Mega Drive edition, making it far more challenging.
5. The mask in the Japanese version resembles a more "kabuki" style design, while the western release looks more like a skull.
6. The ending to this game reminds me of The Revenge of Shinobi, right down to the music.
7. This made its way to the Virtual Console for the Nintendo Wii. Unfortunately, that service has been shut down since.
The original Splatterhouse will always be my favorite. I appreciated what both sequels tried to do but they can't supplant the original for me. Also I liked how you looked at the regional differences. Even when it's minor I love stuff like that.
the Sack is Back!
@@arcticridge The Sack never left.
Same here buddy, the first one is definitely the best.
Stupid Sexy Game Sack
no there is another sequal
I remember the first time I played this, being one of my first Sega games. I was astonished by the amount of gore. It let me know the Genesis was gonna be awesome. This game will always hold a special place in my gaming memories. SEGA!
This game is in my top 10 games of all time and most of my games are from the Xbox and up... I still remember those nights Friday nights when I was 7 maybe 8 years old playing this. and just remembering how incredible creepy it was... But also I remember how diverse the levels and stages were and so many cool boss battles.. and the game just felt good to play..
As a horror movie fanatic, I love the fact that they throw in hell of Easter eggs for us to look at. From the boomstick, and laughing dear To the Friday the 13th Woods and lakes scenario with the mask. I remember as a kid being crushed seeing that Rick's girlfriend Jennifer didn't make it. Then the 3rd 3rd game game or you have to save her again. Crazy ass game. It's been a long time since I played it, but I cracked it open every year or 2 And play a few levels.
I wish a few developers, had the balls to make games like Splatterhouse again.
As simple as the story is in Splatterhouse, there was nothing like it at the time.
Maybe one day Splatterhouse makes a comback.
PS3/XB360 reboot game was pretty good, albeit a bit incomplete.
@@TexasHollowEarth
And janky, don't forget pretty janky.
With all indie games in full swing im surprised we havent seen more splatter house games.
Id like to see a top down version of splatterhouse for instance made with Rpg maker or Wolf rpg editor like mad father.
@@TexasHollowEarth the game bombed according to Namco but making it a comedy/horror thing was perhaps not the best choice. Although the terror mask does have a few good lines. I doubt Namco reboots it again but if they did I hope it would be more like the recent RE games without the comedic stuff.
Yeah, the reboot was decent. But I felt it was too cartoony in tone and art style. And it completely bombed, unfortunately.
I'd like to see it given a modern treatment with a more realistic, grindhouse art style, and more serious tone. But it'll never happen.
I've always loved Splatterhouse 2, nothing else on the Genesis at the time looked like it did and I adore how simple the gameplay is while still being a challenging game.
It's a classic mate 👍
8:58 why does the monster on the cover look exactly like aliens from HR Giger?
@@elgatofelix8917 at the time so many games where doing this 😊
Those graphics where you could bat a baddie into the background was fancy for Sega!
One way to play this game is to pick up the remake they made for the PS3 and X-Box. If you beat that game, all 3 original Splatterhouse games are unlocked as an extra and you can play them there.
Splatterhouse for PS3 and 360 is an under appreciated gem. Plus it has the original 3 as hidden games.
In my opinion, Splatterhouse 2 was one of the defining games that set the Genesis apart from the SNES. Sega wasn’t afraid to have edgy and dark games on its arsenal and this was a prime example. Which is why it has a everlasting effect on gamers. Even until now.
Personally I love it for its style. It’s one of the darkest and most unrelenting horror action games of the era. Same goes for its predecessor.
I'm Rob from West Mansion, and this video has my approval.
This might actually make for a good movie now. Splice up the revised "80s" horror feel of today, but have the hero be the slasher like a Jason character. It could work.
There was someone who tried to make a movie. Total indie project with bad acting. It's on TH-cam somewhere. I think it is based on Splatterhouse 3. Good for a chuckle.
The boss music has always been a personal favourite of mine, what a tune
"Enemies exploding into a pile of goo" If you really look, that's actually exactly what they left out of the TG16 version. The goo is gone when you splat enemies compared to the arcade game
Always enjoyed the series as a whole, was that fun kind of edgy the late 80s and early 90s were known for without being played out. Back during high school/college a few of my friends formed a band (still together today!) and one of the albums they did was a concept album based entirely on Splatterhouse, some real bangers on that one.
Honestly, what you said about pick up and play really hit home. The older I get the less I want to dig through hundreds of pages of Wikis, manuals and walkthroughs to play something. Or the front loaded tutorials that I'll forget by next week when I'll actually need them. Don't get me wrong, I still like dungeon crawlers and RPGs, but I find myself gravitating to a lot of arcade titles and action games for this reason.
Love that game. That soundtrack IS awesome
Nice Review Sega Lord X. I think you should do a video on your favourite top 10 Sega genesis boss music, be interesting. Keep up the great work.
As I am growing older with less time to spend into video games, I tend to really appreciate pick-up and play games, casual games. "Casual" does not mean bad, or boring.
It is also a real quality for a game to be easy to get into and not having to learn or remember the controls while being fun (and sometimes deep) at the same time.
Nice review !
Great game! I listen to the OST often. Keep kicking ass with your channel!
Playing this towards Christmas time in 1992. Ah my childhood was so dam good 😎
I remember a friend of mine had this game as a kid and we'd play it with the lights off. It used to creep us out and there were genuinely some surprising moments throughout the game.
It is obviously tame by today's standards, but it is a decent game. I'd even say it helped shape the horror genre in games as we know it today. I do love these types of pick-up-and-play classic actions games. They can be quite challenging, but they can also be quite satisfying once you finally beat them! I recall this game being pretty tough and I'm sure the controls probably haven't aged the best either.
I’ve always been a huge fan of the SPLATTERHOUSE series! I can remember when the original game came to home consoles back in the day. And I also remember my surprise and joy when it’s sequel was unexpectedly dropped on the Sega Genesis! But personally speaking, I’ve always found the third game the one I return to time and time again. Classic “beat ‘em up” with a larger and more complex map. It also had amazing Horror movie like cut scenes to boot!
I liked the "pal 50hz" version of this game. The game benifits from the slowdown as it makes the music much more dramatic.
Gotta try that fo sho!
Prefer it too. As for Sonic or Fatal Fury, that gives a better feeling to the soundtrack
Yes 100%, I remember there was even a guy to up load the 50zh ost to youtube many years ago.
I found sonic on sega master system better on pal 50hz too.
The pal slowdown wasn't always a detriment.
I still play Splatterhouse 2 to this day! Love this game!
My favorite Splatterhouse. Which is tough when 1 and 3 are great too. But 2 nails the atmosphere. Also is there a cooler Genesis case? That artwork is awesome. I'm hopeful Arcade1up releases a Splatterhouse cab. Or maybe Dotemu gets a chance to make a new Splatterhouse in the vein of the first 2.
This is one of my favorite games of all time, happy to see you talking about it.
Splatterhouse 3 is still better in my opinion though.
I just happened to see the thumbnail and hadn’t thought of this game in almost 30 years. I remember playing this at my Aunt’s house with my older, cool cousin. I must’ve been 4 years old, maybe lol
I don't remember ever seeing splatter house in an arcade back-in-the-day. Splatterhouse 2 on the genesis was my introduction to the franchise and will always be my favorite.
I really like Splatterhouse 2 though it is tough! I have the Genesis version in box though it's missing it's manual but I am still glad I have it!
Great Review brother! 😎 I know I haven't commented much lately but, I still watch every release... Good to see your still at it big guy!😊
Well, I first played this game in the 90s but only just learnt that there is a slide attack
I’ll never play most of the games you review/have reviewed but I always enjoy the videos.
“At least you won’t spend 30 minutes looking at cinematics and tutorials just to play the damn thing” Truer words have never been spoken and I’m a fan of the “quick and dirty” games. Sometimes you just want to get in and play.
Growing up as a Nintendo kid the Splatterhouse games were the main reason I always wanted to own a Sega console!
I loved this game and part 3 was even better iny opinion. Thr music 🎶 and graphics and art 🎨 to me fit well.
The first 3 Splatterhouse games are all classics for me and I still enjoy playing them as much now as I did when I was younger. The audio and visuals in the game come together in a way that makes me feel immersed in the world of Splatterhouse when I play the games and the feeling is the same even with the third game and its different gameplay. It's a lot of fun to feel pulled into that world of hideous monsters, shapeshifting environments, and strange sounds (even the ear-piercing noises that make you want to pummel some foul creature into oblivion just to get it to shut up).
One of my favorite games on the genesis and absolute favorite horror game on the console. The music was extremely thematic, atmospheric and well done at the time.
Very decent game, always wanted the original back when I was a kid but didn't have a tg16 back then
I remember this game being a "bad kid" game, when you played it you felt like you were breaking the law like Judas Priest
Splatterhouse 2 was my playable introduction to the series as a kid. What I mean is I saw the ads for the original coming to Turbo Graffix-16, but I didn't have one of those. And to this day I've still never actually seen a Splatterhouse arcade machine in person. So when this came to the genesis and I saw it randomly one day to rent at the local supermarket (Remember when that was a thing?), I was STOKED! I scooped it up and played the hell out of it. And of course as a kid...it beat the hell out of me. But I loved every minute of it. The creepy music, the gory graphics, the satisfaction of literally splattering my enemies on the wall behind me. It was all so damn cool to me back then as a kid. I was like 8-9 years old when I first saw it, but I grew up in a horror centric household. So names like Jason Voorhees were common place to me even at that age. And here I was, playing as this Jason looking dude and annihilating zombies to save my girlfriend. I loved this game so much. And as a result I still hold a lot of fond nostalgia for it.
It's my favorite in the series because of how it worked for me as a kid. I could gush about this one for hours, really. One of my absolute favorites as a kid.
Man, I was REALLY looking forward for you releasing a review about this game :)
You made a very interesting analysis.
This is one of my favorite games in the Genesis/Megadrive. Even as a 12 y/o kid I was interested in horror movies and I was shocked that a game could be so scary and give me nightmare: It did impact me greatly.
But for what you said here, I now believe that a big portion of said impact has to do with the fact that I never played the first one before I got this one. The TurboGrafx was nowhere to be seen in Europe (Spain, where I was living back then) and the arcade never made it to this country, as far as I know.
The first time I ever played the arcade was in 1992 (shortly after getting this one on the genesis) in a trip to the US to visit my family there. It happened to be available in an arcade (you are not going to believe this, but in Disneyworld of all places lol), I was really happy to be able to play it.
Then I did look forward for the third one, but it never got imported to Europe, sadly. I did replay the third one recently, now that some fans released an "uncut" version that restored changed content based on feedback from the developers regarding the stuff that they were forced to tone down. I recommend you have a look at it: just search for "Splatterhouse 3: Bloody Edition" on the net.
Great video as always. Thank you :)
Jump and hold down then press attack before you hit the ground to do a slide. One of my favorite game OSTs. Also since the origional was not really available in tyhe country I lived any downside to being like the original was not an issue.
I still have my copy I bought brand new back in '92. 👍
This was my first rental game from Blockbuster and the second was Quack shots
I really enjoy your content and have for a handful of years. Thank you
Always wanted to play these games when I was young. I was a Nintendo kid so I missed out on Splatter House. I did try the X360 one tho...so so game but the gore effects were great
There is a nintendo version called splatterhouse wanpaku graffiti on the nes. Its nintendo hard in places too. A hidden gem.
I'm watching on a CRT monitor and he's right, the "transparencies" look much better on my CRT than on my LCD Monitor.
I grew up with Mega Drive but never played this classic during the 16 bit era.
Finally played the trilogy a couple of years ago via emulation and loved it.
As I don't have nostalgia bias towards the first game ( only played the port of Splatterhouse 1 for the PC Engine, not the arcade) the second one stands as the best experience.
Yes,1 and 2 are hard and the control is too stiff- but it is part of the difficulty (and charm) like Ghouls series.
The soundtrack is excellent. Japanese developers really explored the Genesis Yamaha chip .
the new splater house game has the three og sequals in it on the 360 you unlock while playing and on the ps3 you get down load coads
Awesome video Mr X 🤟
I'm a HUGE FAN OF SPLATTER HOUSE,in fact it's the reason U became a artist 🕯️
Classic days as a kid, sitting in the dark playing this game, and letting my imagination run wild🌜🌛
this one is great. When I first played it I thought it was just a genesis version of part 1 but named that way to entice kids to buy it. Years later I found out it was actually a sequel and the first level was actually the burned ruins of the mansion from part 1.
Nice Video Sega Lord.
I really like SH2, like you said, at time who loves the arcade you got the same feeling of the original extended. I became surprised to hear you saying that's this games has audio problems, ofc we got some strach voice but in general its sounds amazing. Thank you for another excellent video
This is one of a small handful of games I wish I owned. The only other game I can think of I wish I owned as much as this one is Mega Turrican. Yeah, gameplay might not be the greatest of all time but it's got a cool factor that is undeniable.
I love this channel. Thank you for continuing to keep up the great work. :)
Simplicity and pick up and play without 30 minutes of cut scenes... Everything I love about these games is in these lines
Absolutely love the opening/eye catch for Splatterhouse 2. 👌
I just get a feeling of 80s horror flicks when I look at the front cover, as a kid that shit blew my mind!
I love that game and I was very pleased to see that the 2010 Splatterhouse reboot included the first three games as unlockables.
I remember the poltergeist boss, quite memorable.
The intro theme to this game is amazing.
This is by far my favorite Splatterhouse soundtrack
Hey Sega Lord X, wanted to ask you if you saw that kickstarter project about a sega themed book? I stumbled upon it while backing a vita book there. I also backed the sega one. It is called the Mega Book Collection. The author covers the Mega Drive, Mega CD, and the 32x in the same book. It looks really cool. Thought you might dig it. Apparently, Splatterhouse 2 will be one of the games discussed in the mega drive section.
SLX, your review is spot on. This game was a bit polarizing - you either liked it or thought it was mediocre. I fell into the latter camp as I personally felt it lacked variety and more importantly a two player mode so my younger brother and I could both play.
It's just more Splatterhouse 1 and wasn't a very mechanically advanced beat-'em-up by 1992 standards. The presentation alone makes it more than worthwhile for me, though.
I hear it called a beat’em up a lot and I can’t say I agree with that. It’s an action game that has elements of a beat’em up but it feels nothing like the genre, otherwise. Folks don’t call Dick Tracy or Moonwalker beat’em ups on the Genesis.
@@SegaLordX I see your point, but I personally consider it an extension of the pre-Renegade/Double Dragon beat-'em-up lineage. A descendent of Kung-Fu Master and Vigilante, in other words. Single movement plane, a focus on landing individual clean hits as opposed to auto-combos and grabs, etc.
We need a remake of this or a sequel like streets of rage 4
This is those kind of games where the style and feel are as important as the gameplay. If you don't like what you see here, this probably isn't your kind of game. I personally love it.
When I was a younger man... sperging out on the nuance between Splatterhouse 1 & 2….. Luv u bro... never change. 🕶️👏✊👍
Spatterhouse 2 was a fun game. From what I remember, I really liked it. I love these modern reviews of classic games. This is another great one SLX.
it sent shivers down my spine back in the day, great game, the prime of the 16-bit era!!!
missed the shotgun on the wall at 6.12
Splatterhouse 2 is a fine follow up. Game looks good and plays solid. I think the music is great and the sound effects are also good. The exception being voice samples which are always an issue with the Genesis. I was surprised to see what they go for these days, 3 is expensive too. Got mine 29 years ago, lol.
As a child I loved it. As an adult going back I find it to much of the same old. Still a good game for first time players
8:03 lol at that bug you triggered there with the monster :)
One of my favorite genesis games. As far as evolving the gameplay this entry didnt really do that. The third one tried that and took it way too far, ruining the series for me. It ended up as a mediocre beat em up by trying to become more like Streets Of Rage but with alot more gameplay issues. They couldve added more while maintaining the same linear style though. I still like the first game better overall.
The charm of this game helps you to overlook some of its shortcomings. The gameplay is limited but where it succeeds is that it sticks to short and varied arcade segments so it never gets boring. This is where the third game went wrong. It tried to expand the gameplay but it turns into a real grind and is a chore to play.
Great work Sir thank you
Loved the first game, but never touched the series after. That poltergeist house boss in Splatterhouse 1 will always be one of my favorite boss encounters in gaming.
it's cool that most of the levels are outdoors
Splatter house 2 was awesome. i stared at the art work for an hour when i got it of someone at school
Been watching your videos for awhile now and I just realized for the first time that the cartridge's in the intro have your name on them. lol
dude i remember playing this game with myt friend as a kid, and something weird happened when we were playing it..... we got invaded by spiders!
no joke we were just sitting there playing but over the course of playing for like 30 minutes we saw a fucktn of spiders crawling around the wall and even dropping down from the cieling. shit was weird as fuck! it wasnt a swarm of spiders, maybe about 7 total... but thats the most spiders ive ever seen in a house in such short time in my life
The only splatter house I've ever seen on Genesis with splatter house 3 I didn't know they had splatter house two for Genesis. Cool
Part 2 is the best splatterhouse game in the entire series for me, gruesome graphics amazing creepy music and it was available in the home i remember this game had quite an impact on me as i had breifly played the arcade machine and now could finally play it at home but in a somewhat remixed game.
I feel like this game gets sort of a pass for being similar to the original, since Genesis owners didn't have a chance to experience that anyway. The arcade game is easily accessible on the affordable Namco Museum on current platforms, if anyone wants to take it for a spin. It absolutely holds up today imo.
I loved this game as a kid. I played the 2nd first and then the 3rd game. Didn't have a turbo graphics to play it and had to wait years to play it. Over all, I'd say the 2nd is the best... as a horror movie fanatic, this had many Easter eggs and the story was IMO amazing and heat breaking to see what Rick & Jennifer have to go through... Horror isn't for everyone but this is for sure one of my ll time favorite games period. Music and sound effects are haunting and used to freak out my younger siblings when we played this. Loved the series! Couldn't get into the Playstation remake tho. Hope a developer could one day capture the magic of the original... simplicity isn't easy to duplicate. Please review part 3. Happy Video game nurd did a great review of the series.
As a kid I was convinced this was a port of an arcade game similar to the first game so in that sense it definitely did a good job as a continuation of the first game.
This looks amazing. I just want to play a game and not have to wait for updates or FMV scenes to finish playing for several minutes. Thanks for sharing.
Great video as usual. The original was one of the games I always thought looked so cool but it was hard to come by as the TG16 didn't really take off here. By the time I found out about this version I was already sinking my lunch money into MK in the arcades. Even to this day I don't think I've even launched any of this series in any emulator. Your great review is good enough for me tho!
Please review the underrated part 3. Great review as always.
I don't know about Splatterhouse 1 or 2, but I absolutely loved Splatterhouse 3!
I have had this game boxed for many years and have played it loads and will continue to. Splatterhouse 2 is great.
SLX, I noticed on the Japanese version the title screen was called Splatterhouse PART 2. If I could speculate, I think the developers may have stuck to the old formula so closely because it was developed more as a continuation to the story of the first Splatterhouse in the sense of an expansion pack to the original content. In the American gaming community, when we see a sequel to a game we're expecting a whole new evolution to the franchise, mainly because of American businessmen dictating what we want, and developers meeting those demands to reach market. Where as in Japan, Mario 2 would be an ideal reference for my conjecture, with their version being more of what made Super Mario bros great. I like how as you aged you also seen what our friends in the Pacific seen, and that was what made the game great, as opposed to the reinvention and evolution that sometimes ruins games, or backs developers into a corner with what they want to release in their game, for the fear of creating a flop and losing what they love to do.
My older brother had this game. And I loved it
Absolutely love splatterhouse games. They we're fast and fun, challenging and creepy, even as a kid who was pretty easy to scare the story made you want to keep playing.
I scored that sweet lookingJapanese version on ebay for a pretty good price some time ago. So glad I did, since I would never be able to find it so cheap now. As a big horror fan, the style alone makes it a cool game to me. I do have to side with you (and the majority of others here ) in agreeing that the original Splatterhouse is still the best in the series.
A favorite rental of mine, especially being a big jason fan
I really like playing this on the Evercade, Namco Collection 2.
*highlights that you can get shotguns right after chainsaws*
Me: "Groovy."
I really loved this game back in the day! For me it was so gory and not like anything else really at the time. Also, I never had access to the original so as far as I was concerned, this was a fresh experience! I still fire it up every now and then and enjoy it every bit as much as I did back then!!
SH2 is crazy fun, I love the visuals! It also represents the best & worst of that kind of "memorize what happens" type arcade game level design. It's almost like an FMV / QTE game you can actually play. Other than branching paths? There's not much choice. It's still "here's how you do it right & you die if you do otherwise" kind of game play.
