Condoleezza Rice recently became part of the Denver Broncos' new six-member ownership group, the Walton-Penner Group, who bought the team from the Bowlen Family Trust for a record $4.65 billion. The purchase was approved in August. The group is headed by Rob Walton, chairman of the Walmart Board and an heir to Walmart founder Sam Walton. The other members are Carrie Walton Penner and Greg Penner (Rob's daughter and son-in-law), Starbucks chairwoman Mellody Hobson, and seven-time champion Formula One racecar driver Sir Lewis Hamilton. Ms. Rice's previous football experience came as a member of the inaugural College Football Playoff selection committee from 2013-16, and, in 2021, she made an appearance on Peyton and Eli's "Manningcast" on Monday Night Football.

In 2003 ESPN reported Joe Torre was being fired and replaced with Lou Piniella. They also said Derek Jeter was going to sign with the Astros. Most recently they said Russell Wilson was a locked trade for the Giants.
Chew on this a minute. If it weren't for the ineptitude of the Bucs ownership they could have had both Bo Jackson and Steve Young. Imagine the Bucs with both of those great players. With Don Coryell coaching.
Sorry but Steve Young, like Mark Rypien etc. is good on a totally loaded team. He's not Montana or Brady who can take an otherwise nondescript team all the way. Young is like Kelly, Elway, Aikman etc. Good. NOT great.
Ah the sports media. Some things never change. Reminds me of the more recent Manti Te'o story where the slightest bit of reporting would have done wonders.
I don't want to Woosh myself, but I would guess that there is a lot more Mike Smith's than Don Coryell's (although it would be fun if it happened once!)
I'm a lifelong Hillsborough County resident and I never heard about this mess. WFLA radio is our legacy news/talk radio station and a station of its stature should've known better. With just the Bucs at the time, it's not as if verifying things would've spread WFLA's people too thin. Just embarrassing reporting there. I doubt the station even tried to confirm an interview even took place. It probably saw the Don Coryell name on a property listing in Carrollwood (unincorporated while retaining a Tampa address) and didn't do any further digging than that.
@Spiders From mars The Cardinals didn't make it, either, like, Hank Stram, (who DID make the HOF), they lost the last two Games of the 1977 season, against Tampa Bay, (Hank Stram coached the Saints), both, coaches were fired after the season, I can't prove that was the reason, but, I can't DISPROVE it, either.
@Spiders From mars Correct, unfortunately, the HOF, inexplicably, took their sweet time on electing him, as a result, his speech was recorded, he had a candy bar habit, which led to the diabetes which eventually killed him.

Here I was thinking maybe Coryell wanted to buy a retirement house in Florida. Because that's a normal thing that lots of people do, retire to Florida.
The whole idea that Coryell, who had the misfortune of working for three of the worst NFL owners ever (Bill Bidwill, Gene Klein, Alex Spamnose,) would try coaching for Hugh Culverhouse one of the few owners who was even worse was absurd. At least the three owners he coached for waited for their best players to have their best seasons BEFORE getting rid of them. Culverhouse burned the bridge with Bo Jackson before he even drafted him. Still, given what Coryell did with Bo's college teammates (James Brooks and Lionel James) what he could have accomplished with Bo is awesome to think about.
Maybe he wouldn't have done that if Don Coryell had been his coach. As I recall, Vinny had some really good years much later on, when he had a couple of guys named Belichick and Parcells as his coach.

I would compare Don Coryelle more to Norv Turner although Coryell was a better head coach neither guy was going to win a championship but they had good systems.
Norv Turner got an absurdly long tenure in Washington, Richie Petibon got one season, and, people still think his exit was unfair, despite, the fact, that the NFL deliberately held up approving the sale to prevent his termination, with, the Chargers, he just caught all the breaks, Marty Schottenheimer, didn't, despite, deserving exactly none of them.
