    I've got a Rolex Hulk and. Batman -- but the Blue Pelly gets the most wear-time. They did something ingenious with it's design ... the dark metal, the flat sharp contrast, the sloped inner ring and almost 3d indices ... it is the perfect watch. I've sometimes even contemplated buying a second one as a spare. It's the best watch I've ever owned. Also the case proportions are nearly perfect - all the angles and shapes work together in perfect harmony.

    Bought my Pelagos about six months ago and, much like yourself, I love it to death. It’s never leaving my collection.

    This was my first proper watch, haven’t even considered upgrading from this. I truly love this thing. Tool watch heritage, tool watch soul, tool watch performance, and tool watch looks. I also have huge hands & wrists (I’m 6 foot 4) so frankly it’s the perfect size for me. It might be kind of controversial but I still think it looks good with a suit just as it does with hiking gear, and it fits under every cuff I have tried to wear it with.
    I feel like the issue for me with the P39 is the lack of helium escape valve, the clasp, and the differences with the lume pips on the face. It’s a nice watch, but it’s a bit overrated. The proper goat is the 42.

    • @georgetown8986
      @georgetown8986 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The Pelagos looks outstanding with a suit. I'm a lawyer and wear suits and sports coats quite frequently. I love the look of the Pelagos with my Brooks Brothers or Polo Blue Line suits.

      @@georgetown8986 Totally agree. For me (and I can tell you) the watch is pretty proportional when I wear it with a sport coat. I also quite like the matte finish of the watch with as suit as well. I think the common critique coming from people about the 42 that it is too big for this is because they are too small to wear the watch in the first place haha
      Georgetown! I applied there back in the day- ended up at Notre Dame. Awesome university and one of my favorite campuses I've ever visited. Cheers to you

    I've had my Blue Pelagos since 2015. Like you I have a larger wrist size (7 1/2") and like you it would probably be my last watch to be sold. The quality and look of this watch is unmatched for a true tool watch/diver. It still puts a smile on my face every time I put it back on. And believe me that's a rare feat in today's watch world. Keep up the good content!

  • @AirAdam13

    The 42 is still the champion. It seems like many in the watch media are only waking up to the Pelagos since the 39 came out, even sounding surprised at features (like the included rubber strap) that have been there since the first release! The 39 seems a bit "fancier" in the finish, but the aggressive sterility of the original is what made it appeal to me - I'll be keeping mine!

    • @thewatchidiot
      @thewatchidiot  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah agreed on all your points! I'm glad that more people are recognizing the glories of the Pelagos and the surprise many feel is pretty funny at times lol! I really like the Pelagos 39 and at one point i was ready to fire sale some watches to get one! But after spending time with mine I'm surprised by how little I've thought about the 39mm version. Like you said, that clinical efficiency and legibility of the original just doesnt get old and even if a Pelagos 39 does join it some day, I now know that it will stand its ground more than comfortably

    Don't worry about the ISO 6425 rating. The Tudor divers are rock solid on this score. Before I bought my Black Bay 58 I challenged the makers over this: they responded by reminding me that Tudor had been making excellent dive watches long before the advent of ISO 6425, and that I could take it as read that if tested, the Tudor would comply. As an aside, James Heaton, in a recent article for Hodinkee said that over the years Tudor and Rolex were the only dive watches that had never given him a problem. They are totally reliable, and you can take them to their stated rating in complete confidence. In other words, go for it!

    • @thewatchidiot
      @thewatchidiot  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Oh yeah i have no doubts on them meeting the standards, what i was saying was I actually think they go the extra mile by having the bezel fully lumed! It makes checking the time and elapsed time in low light situations so easy that I think that fully lumed bezels should be part of the ISO standards! Of course it would be expensive for many watch companies but still.
      If I were to go diving id take my citizen promaster diver and my pelagos for sure, they feel like they can handle everything!

      @thewatchidiot  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah the pelagos will look great on your wrist for sure! The ETA versions are great i love that it has an easily serviceable movement the simpler dial is a nice plus too. At the very least I just wish my version didnt have "rotor self winding" there its just such a useless phrase. No need for nods to history on such a modern watch!

    The 42mm is still hard to get from an AD in western Canada, I'm flying to Victoria on Vancouver Island to pick up the only one I could find. All of the western Canadian AD websites say "by request only" on most popular Tudor watches including the entire Pelagos lineup, which of course means they don't have any in stock or available. I was given a call about two weeks after inquiring with all the Tudor AD's from Ontario to Vancouver Island. I'm pretty jacked to be going to Victoria, it's a beautiful place, it has a great array of boutique restaurants and my brand new Pelagos awaits!

    Just got the P39. My absolute dream is the P42 reimagined into a smaller offering. Call it the P40. 40mm, 13mm-ish thick, Helium Escape valve, 20mm bracelet tapering to 16mm, and of course the sweet clasp. The P42 is too big for me and it kills me to not have it haha. I hope they just come out with a scaled down version of P42 and remove the paragraph on the dial. Love the P42 though!

    I love the Pelagos 42, and from my experience with my LHD I can't disagree with your views, Its super comfortable on the bracelet such that I've never felt the need to change it or swap to the rubber strap, something that I was going to try those years ago when I purchased it. My LHD is a keeper. Having received the call from the AD last Thursday I picked up the 39 yesterday. I can say that in my case it is different enough to coexist with my LHD without treading on any toes.

    • @thewatchidiot
      @thewatchidiot  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Oh wow congrats on the new pick up!!! At first i was worried about the Pelagos 39 stepping ont he toes of my Pelagos but after wearing it for 2.5 weeks straight i have no doubt in my mind that they would be able to coexist and hearing from you that you think they can coexist within your collection is just the confirmation i needed! For the time being I'm just happy that i feel this way bc its saving me $4400 lol but i have a feeling that i wont be able to resist a 39 for much longer especially if they release one in navy blue! Hope you wear your Pelagos 39 in good health!

    • @anthonystevens8683
      @anthonystevens8683 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@thewatchidiot My LHD looks different to the normal Pelegos 42 (apart from the crown position), mine has slight aged lume on the hands and markers and the roulette date wheel, the 39 has white hands and markers (the lume is nuts like the BB Pro lume slices) so may be a little closer to your Pelegos than mine, yeh a blue version would be interesting and a greater differentiator to your Pelagos. The 39 is still a tool watch but just a little more versatile than my LHD for some occasions. My LHD is still one of my all time favourites, those shoes are just too comfortable.

    I'm commenting on this 1 yr old video because it's still so relevant. I'd been eyeing the Tudor Pelagos LHD for some time(and I am right handed), and have watched numerous YT's on it. I finally went to a local AD and tried on the LHD, standard 42 Pelagos, and Pelagos 39. The 39 looked great on my 7 inch relatively flat wrist, and so did the standard(RHD) 42. But the 42 LHD looked that much better. I love the cream colored lume vs the stark white lume. I love the depth of the dial thanks to the stepped chapter ring(rehaut?) and applied markers. I also tried on the Black Bay 41 and really liked it, but not nearly as much as the Pelagos LHD. I love the Pelagos bracelet and ingenious clasp. The BB's faux rivets bracelet, maybe not so much. I bought the LHD and am loving it. Thanks for these great reviews.

    I believe that it comes down to wrist presence and specs. If you really need your watch to be a little bit smaller and you don't care about almost perfect specifications go for the 39. It's a great looking watch. If you really like a great, buffed up Diver’s watch go for the 42. If the 39 pelagos comes out in blue that will mean that TUDOR is going to discontinue the 42. Don't believe it's gonna happen. As for the price difference it isn't as much as it should be. The 39 is overpriced.

I love it. Your video hits on all the great points. The lume is insane! The titanium looks beautiful but unfortunately scratches so easily. I bought the 39mm and sold for the original 42mm - more appropriate fit for me. Now, if they made a 42mm no-date!! That’d be the perfect watch.

    I proved the 42 on my 7 3/4 inch wrist, but I felt it was to chunky, So I went with the p39, ive used a 38 Victorinox and my wrist is kind of big, but didn't like the chubbyness of the 42

    Hi Mr Idiot (or can I call you Watch?). This is a great video of a fantastic watch. BUT: while this would be excellent worn over a wet suit my wrists would be too small for me, and many other people, to wear in normal circumstances. This is where the Black Bay 58, Pelagos 39 and Sinn U50 score. However, I really need to try the FXD, which would suit me much better, both for its uniqueness and reduced thickness. I'd still need to try it though, because for me the sheer size of many tool watches makes them impractical to wear. I'm glad you relate so well to the Pelagos. Many people struggle to find THE watch, but if you can cope with the size the Pelagos is an excellent choice.

    • @thewatchidiot
      @thewatchidiot  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Glad you enjoyed the video! and yeah thats absolutely right, I'm so glad that the Pelagos 39 came out because it now offers so much of the pelagos charm but in a much more manageable size. For me my ideal watch size is 38-40mm so if i didnt already have and love my 42mm pelagos i'm pretty sure that I would have chosen the Pelagos 39 right now! I used to have a U1 but even tho it technically fit my wrist it was just too big for me so i got really excited that they made the 41mm size. I'm just hoping that they make a 41mm version of the oil filled quartz UX, bc the dial illusion is just incredible and unlike anything else.
      The Pelagos FXD is an interesting one and i hope you get to try it one bc it definitely feels much thinner and if you put it on a single pass strap it wont sit high on the wrist at all. that being said the visual weight of it on the wrist is still relatively alot bc the dial is one flat piece instead of having the stepped chapter ring on the original pelagos. But that was my experience, I hope it is better for you!

    What I don't like is the grade titanium Tudor uses. It does easily mark whereas a Seiko titanium with diashield is more robust.

    Of course the 42mm version is still awesome, unfortunately I'm sized out of it anyway, so I don't have to break my head over which one to get...hell, my wrists are so girly, I can barely pull off the Pelagos 39 or the BB58, they are the maximum of what watch size that looks somewhat proportionate on my wrists...

    • @thewatchidiot
      @thewatchidiot  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      loool yeah not having to decide is a nice thing in this case! Yeah the pelagos 39 probably wears a bit bigger with the bigger bezel but at least the lug to lug is shorter than the lug to lug on the BB58.
      Btw check out the Seiko SNE569 and its variants if you havent already, its quartz (not sure how you feel about that) but its 37mm and less than 11mm thick and it was my most worn watch last year! I cant get enough of it, its so comfy

      @@thewatchidiot thanks for the advice, might research a bit more about that Seiko, measurements sound amazing.
      Out of curiosity: Do you have experience with Christopher Ward?
      Since my wrist is so small I'm thinking about getting the CW C60 Trident Pro 300 in the 38mm version, should be a size that suitable for my wrist...the CW C63 Sealander GMT also seems nice.

    The Pelagos 42 is definitely Tudor's more purposeful and tool-like model - it's marvellous. However, I dislike the ratchet/spring clasp although it works as intended, but in this day and age let's face it, 99% of wearers will not be needing it to snorkel, let alone saturation dive. Hence why the latest 39 will appeal to a wider audience with its more compact aesthetics, excellent specs and that 5-digit Submariner vibe (incl red text), not to mention that fabulous T-Fit clasp. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and it's nice to now have a choice.

  • @lynnlittle8671

    I like the Pelagos 39, but the 21mm lug width is not a good thing...
    I wear a black BB58, I'm seriously contemplating acquiring a blue 42mm Pelagos. My 7.5" wrist handles 42-44mm watches just fine, and I really want a blue Tudor...

    I tried it on today. Sadly it does feel a little small. Also the bezel is VERY shiny. That sunburst really explodes on the dial, didnt notice it on the dial really though at all. It looks mad luxe though. 100% a rolex killer. But if you have some weight to your arms or go to the gym regularly, this thing is just going to feel a but tiny unfortunately.

      Yeah no doubt about it I'm really happy that so much of that pelagos magic can now be experienced by more people! For me my ideal watch size is 38-40 so a 39mm pelagos is right up my alley too but this video wasnt made to say heres why the 42mm version is better than the 39mm one. Its more to say heres why the 42mm version just as a watch on its own is still incredible! (given how forgotten this model usually is lol)

      @@thewatchidiot You are right mate. It’s just amazing how ppl downgrade constantly this watch because they own a 42. The reality is that the Pelagos 39 wears like 40 due to bezel diameter being 40mm

    The P39 has certainly put the Pelagos on the map.
    It’s a shame that it has ruffled BB58 owners feathers and they are being negative about what is a stunning watch which is perfect for a lot of people.
    My only gripe is that the bracelet tapers so much to the clasp.
    The extra 1mm at the head should have carried down to the clasp.
    Gives it an overly feminine feel IMO.

  • @Nefville

    There's something about the flat dial and bezel that just make the Pelly work and I think its a big reason why I'm so meh on the new 39mm. First, I hate grade 2 titanium. Its grey and too toolish and SCRATCHES but it fits the theme of the OG Pelly, not so much on the fancy sunburst dial and bezel. I might have let my anti-G2 Ti bias go if it had a more toolish look.

    • @thewatchidiot
      @thewatchidiot  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah i get what you're saying, if a watch is going to go full on tool watch, it might as well go all the way! The stepped chapter ring on the 42mm one looks great too. I'm ok with the dial and bezel on the 39 for the time being since they seem to be subdued in some lights ( although I've yet to seen one in person). But a fully matte 39mm version would be undeniably cool tho!

    Most of the positives you mention about the 42mm Pelagos also apply to the Pelagos 39. I’m not sure how this explains why the 42mm is preferable. Personally, I feel the Pelagos 39 is a welcome refinement of the original Pelagos.

      for regular diving, youre right, there is no use for a date function. However, the pelagos was designed for saturation divers and they need a date function bc they can be living in a tiny windowless dive bell for up to 4 weeks and they lose sense of what day it is!

    The 39mm is by far the better watch. The sales prove it the 42mm was a bit of a failure still is.

    • @thewatchidiot
      @thewatchidiot  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The 39mm version is super cool for sure but its made for more general use as opposed to the original Pelagos was designed solely as a diving/saturation diving instrument so it was never made or sold in big numbers (although many ADs have waitlists for the Pelagos 42). Its kind of like saying that the porsche GT3 or GT3RS are failures bc they sell fewer than standard 911s. Both incredible cars just designed for different uses and made in different numbers
