Was this the show where he jumped off of his piano and twisted his ankle? I'm trying to remember what year that was.He took a 20 minute break, then came back with Funeral for a Friend. I was 15. Best showman I'd ever seen and I'm a classic rock girl
@@ricksmith3542 I listened to the whole concert yesterday. It's everything my 15 yr old self remembers including the intermission and starting after that with Funeral for a Friend. I didn't realize it was his first big stadium performance.
My second concert in my life was Elton and Kiki Dee with special guest John Lennon at the Garden. I saw this tour too. When I hear Funeral for a friend , I get chills. It’s been a long time since. I have two tickets on hold for Elton at the Garden again and thanks to COVID , it’s been delayed till next year. My last chance to see Elton in my lifetime. Thank you Elton for a lifetime of music !
I was at the Sports Arena in San Diego for this one, too. My ears rang for three days afterwards and I couldn't let my parents know or they would never have let me go to a gig again. Good freakin' times!
I don't know what to say I'm a big elton fan I feel humbled by this gig the best thing I've listened to in an awful long time rock on elton I love you see you in Norwich maybe in my lifetime ❤
I saw Elton John in 1976 in Pontiac Michigan. There was about 70 thousand people there. The crowd was as loud and hysterical as the Beatles concerts in the 60's.
Elton and the band (Davey, Ray, Caleb, Roger, James, and Kenny) could certainly kick on those 1975 WEST OF THE ROCKIES tour rock tracks! That segment of the show from "Hercules" through "Love Lies Bleeding" is as rocking as Elton ever performed as is worth the price of admission, and then some!
The short version of why is that Mike took his own life many years ago and his tapes were stored at his mothers house and it took all these years to convince her of the legacy held in his recordings.

Given the taping technology available in 1975 and the fact that few bands other than the Grateful Dead,Allman Brothers and a few other assorted bands associated with the “hippie” and tape trading scene allowed fans to openly record their concerts this is an unbelieveably spectacular recording if this is indeed an audience recording not to mention the fact that this is at San Diego Sports Arena which is a fairly large,14,600 capacity, arena which are hard to record in.
Thanks for the share!!! Nice quality. I had a portland one on CD, audience recording, not a great one, so this one is particularly nice to hear, and more being played in it too!!
His show in Charlotte was 8 weeks earlier (Louder Than Concorde...) and hardly did any of the old tunes from Tumbleweed or Honky Chateau. I would have loved to have heard this set list live.
Been following Elton since ‘73, I don’t believe I’ve heard street kids before. The music /tempo/chorus is very similar Elton song and I can’t think of what it is.. Help!
See everyone saying this here is so right, THIS right here is the TRUE prime live Elton. Let’s start with the freaking musicality. This band is unreal. The totally unnecessary and boring 20 minute jams that are tacked onto the end of songs that don’t need it really ENHANCE the song! Not to mention those backing vocalists who never ONCE sound like their voices don’t match at all, and they totally sound completely pleasant the entire show! Not to mention all the extra random fills Roger Pope does to make sure we know he’s not Nigel! But then there’s Elton himself. My God. The people who say his prime live was 1979-1985, when his voice was extremely smooth and strong and well trained with a powerful falsetto, well I don’t know what they’re thinking. This tired, weak, thin, shrill, off key and overall unpleasant Elton is PRIME LIVE. Like also, he was in his commercial prime so that automatically makes this the prime live people! Like, listen to how he sounds completely depressed and miserable as he sleeps his way through this (thankfully) 3+ hour show! He’s never sounded better, how could he?!! Overall, this is the prime Elton concert right here. In fact it is so perfect and without flaws that I can barely stomach listening to a single second of it! And in such perfect quality too. Amazing.
very funny and spot on analysis....for a moment I thought he's dosing off or spacing out...but this was in his depressed period prior to the fake suicide incident, before dodger stadium right?

After years of hearing '1973-75 is the prime live period' from the Elton fandom, I was pretty shocked by how messy this is. It's one of those 'I think people must be hearing something different than I'm hearing' moments. If this took place in the age of camera phones, moments from this would be all over TH-cam under the title 'Elton John vocal fail'
Nothing beats the original band of John / Johnstone / Murray / Olsson. This set list with the original band would have been fantastic. They took on many of these songs in the 1982 and 1984 Australian tours - with their good friend Fred Mandell on keyboards and occasional guitars - and they sounded fantastic. Better that this band. Too busy. Too messy. Too much.
I think this is probably the worst performance of Philadelphia Freedom I've ever heard. Intonation is terrible and he sounds so lethargic. Probably because of how long the show was I guess. He's lucky that this attempted Ab4 2:59:37 was mostly drowned out by the backing vocals because it is egregiously flat and sounds awful
