I like the idea of a seer or diviner who guides people through a filcher's territory, and brings gifts to appease the filcher, which he makes a big show of placing on the ground and backing away. The filcher appears, snatches up the object, and vanishes, and thus, everyone sees that this seer truly does know how to appease the evil spirits and allow people to cross unharmed. Just a neat little side thing for the players to experience. Gives them that feeling that there are magical occurrences all around, not just for them. This is a magical world, after all.
We had one of these things shadow us for an entire module because of that 7 minute time jump. None of the PCs caught on to the timing because the critter would just vanish, not appear to attack from a weird angle, and we'd just pack up and move on. It wasn't until we found the critter's lair and the sorcerer started to get twitchy about curved space and angular time that we decided to wait out the next appearance.
AJ: "Ethereal Filchers are generally harmless nuisances that aren't even actively malevolent." Also AJ: "Don't look at the patterns. Their lairs, they...don't look at the patterns." Because existential dread out of nowhere is always welcome and gut-wrench-y at once!
Sounds like a great setup for a co-antagonist adventure with the Guecubu. A local detective looked too hard at patterns from the filchers and now his mind is vulnerable to posession. He now leads the guard and [the players] through the city on a conspiracy hunt against themselves.
Your description of a Filcher treasure web made me think of conspiracy board with red string and now I'm imagining a bunch of filchers trying to solve some cosmic mystery no one else has become aware of.
I could see them either being some powerful entity's little helpers that either does or does not exist anymore but used them to pilfer magical items and artifacts across the realms. Alternatively or even combined this bit with the above, judging from their appearance and them being drawn to magical items they could have been a race that was prosperous and made use of the ethereal plane and too a lesser extent temporal but caused something to happen that devolved them into the creatures we see forever wandering the universe as magical item thieving kleptos that have some species wide nostalgia for the days of old but not able to fully appreciate or understand it.
I never had much use for Filchers in campaigns. I always saw them as one trick ponies because they aren't really designed to fight, just grab and run off. I'm sure any wizard with a wealth of magical items has several wards and spell traps ready for just such thieves. I'm not sure if anybody has ever pursued, detained and questioned a Filcher about it's motives, however I'm sure much information could be gleaned from such an endeavor.
That progressieve initiative modifier is going onto my next BBEG, for sure. He's a smart one, so he could learn to anticipate tbh Thanks a lot, as always a very good videa AJ
I'm planning my own horror campaign in my home-brew domains of dread setting. I've been trying to figure out what monsters would fit in the city of whispers and these sound perfect. For those of you that are curious my city of whispers is 1of6 primary domains in the campaign (and my personal favorite.) It's a crowded cramped city, it's streets are to narrow as if being strangled by the massive buildings. Upon entering the buildings they to are strangely cramped, the rooms too small as what the exterior of the building would suggest and the halls too long for the rooms. This is by design, not by magical means. The rooms are too small because in between each room there's just enough space for a medium sized humanoid to comfortably walk, or uncomfortably live. Some one could be just inches away from the head rest of your bed. But the true horror of the domain is the whispers, every one who appeared in this domain rolls a D6 for what they hear in their head: 1 encouraging their darkest impulses and intrusive thoughts 2 discouraging, belittling, and insulting the listener 3 paranoia and conspiracy 4 gibbering incomprehensible madness 5 numbing silence (it numbs all their scenes and even their emotions) 6 roll for two. This domain is all about conspiracy, betrayal, and the horror of your own mind, and I've been trying to find monsters that'll fit into it (other than the people who've given in to the whispers.) The reason there's 6 home-brew domains is because when you die in one you roll a D6 for which one you appear next in. To keep the party relatively connected I'll say that people who's fates are linked tend to appear close to each other so you're not rolling for the individual but for the group, and I'll try to go easy on people who have just died so I'm not DMing the party over more than 2 domains.
I’m loving the bits in your videos lately where something strange and perception altering happens to the sage and we get a little ride along with that. Another great video. Interesting beastie, AJ. You are my first exposure to these, right here, right now... unless I simply forgot them because I never gave them much thought. As for the reason for their "must have a reason" hoard, I see it as somewhere between the real-world rodent called a "Packrat (Pack Rat)" or a typical Human hoarder. It kind of reminds me of that 12-sided die shaped creature with tentacles in the boxed set D&D Immortals.
It took a few times reading before I stopped reading Feltch. First thought was J.K. Rowling got a name for her squib janitor from a creepy DnD monster. I hate dyslexia most of the time, but I got a laugh out of this one.
Is it possible for a wizard, warlock or mage to use an ethereal or temporal filcher as sort of guard dog. To devest an intruder of a potentially dangerous magical item or just a mystical object that the owner of the lair may be interested in or want?
The word filcher fills me with, I don't know what, perhaps fear, perhaps excitement? Please help me great sage, this thing makes me feel wrong in all the right ways.
When this first popped up on my phone, the word "FILCHER" had the bottom cut off the thumbnail. I thought "I've never heard of an "ETHEREAL F*CKER. What edition was THAT in?" Lol
Maybe filchers are like a corrupted version of some ancient species of intelligent magic using beings. Their current state could be akin to how humanoid races can get lycanthropy or vampirism or like a contagious transformation, similar to that which Golem from LoTR was afflicted with. maybe they were great artificers and have remanent memories of their past civilizations and collect and arrange magic items in a futile dull witted attempt at arcane artificery to counteract their cursed condition. And maybe every once and a while one of those futile attempts to restore themselves does effect a change, which could explain the temporal variation… maybe there are other variations like shadow filchers or astral filchers or chaos filchers. Oh! What if their curse became compatible with beings from the prime material plane and a player could contract filcherism, which creates a risk of a material-filcheristic planedemic apocalypse!
I've also been reminded of something when I saw this video. In pathfinder there's a dragon of the planes called a havoc dragon. I was wondering if it exists in d&d or if there's an equivalent dragon type,

The Fletchers may exist to take an overpowered item from the party, to force them to think outside the box. The party may have one item they always fall on. Some items can even break the game. Now the party can get the item back as it hidden not gone. If I used them I would have them in a hidden spot close to a Bandit hideout, or a goblin or orc cave.
