- Elizabethan Serenade is a light music composition by Ronald Binge. When it was first played by the Mantovani orchestra in 1951, it was simply titled "Andante cantabile", although the original orchestral manuscript parts in Ronald Binge's own hand show the title "The Man in the Street" (possibly the title of an early television documentary). The name was altered by the composer to reflect the post-war optimism of a "new Elizabethan Age" that began with the accession of Queen Elizabeth II in February 1952.
The piece won Binge an Ivor Novello award and also had chart success in Germany (recorded by the Günther Kallmann Choir) and South Africa. A version with lyrics by poet Christopher Hassall called Where the Gentle Avon Flows was released and the work also had lyrics added in German, Czech, Norwegian, Swedish, Finnish, Dutch, Danish and French. The piece was used as the signature tune to Music In Miniature on the BBC Light Programme.
I was inspired to record this by my friend John Williams who commissioned my son Andrew to make a backing track for it.
So I made an arrangement that worked on the guitar and made Tabs out for it playing to Andrews backing Track.

Played on my Alan Brason custom Stratocaster with Kinman FV-HMS pickups on mid position. Through an Alesis Quadraverb Q2 with EFTP (Echoes from the past patch 0-36)
Sound recorded in Cubase SX6 and edited with the three 4K Video takes in Sony Vegas pro 14.

I always thought this suited guitar so well (well played by the way!) - I actually used to play it on guitar in the early 1970s when I was a professional musician, around the clubs. It was always a big success.

My favourite tune
Absolutely fantastic and a big well done to you. I've loved this tune since James Last did it back in the 70s but never heard it done so well nor on an electric guitar before. Actually it was listening to you doing real guitar solos that got me away from being the three chord wonder I was for 40 years. Many thanks!

You made my day Phil, thank you. I first heard this when my parents purchased the 78rpm record in about 1957. It has since been a real favorite ever since. Louise Tucker sings to it in 'Only For You' - it's a beautiful song worth listening to. Now where is my guitar?

Wow! That takes me back to my early youth when this melody seemed to be played every Saturday when I listened to the radio (Brian Matthew and 'Fluff' Freeman ... that dates me!).

It dates me too. I can remember lying in bed on Saturday mornings and listening to Saturday Club with Brian Matthews. He always had the latest hot group performing live sessions. I wish these had been recorded so we could listen to them today.

@@random275 I have to say Phil I have played it and played it , it has a special place in my heart I was born in 1952 and this piece of music came out in 1951 and I remember it was the first piece of music I can remember my Father was into music and he told me the title I must of been 4 or 5 . I grew up in England a small place called Newent home of the great Joe Meek , Joe was friends with my parents and I remember Joe bringing Tony Meeham and Hank Marvin to house to play and my Mother making tea for them I would have been about 7 at the time . When I hear you play it reminded me of the Shadows . Thanks for the lovely playing.

Hi Ian - I'm glad you remembered it from all those years ago - the middle 8 ( Does that apply to a waltz ?? or the middle 12 lol ) where it goes into minors and you got lost - well I made up my own tune as the backing was just string chords - so I can understand that that was a new improvised bit Lol . hi phil i first heard this tune when the bbc did a weekly serial of the railway childern 1957 tho i can not find any reference to it but i can certainly hear the train in the music it might be a trick of the mind but its in my memory
