You pretty much confirmed what I suspected of a movie like this: A great concept being dragged down by the "too many cooks" syndrome. Still I'll check it out, since an atjmospheric period piece with supernatural elements sounds too up my alley to pass up. Also now I'm morbidly curious how they messed up the ending, because in the book the Demeter's arrival in London is such an iconic and even cineastic visual that I'm always disappointed when it gets cut in an adaptation and I was interested in how this movie would handle it... and now I'm really intetested in how they'll mess it up. 😅 Thanks for the review!
Saw it... Mixed feelings about it... Had great potential but became a draggy by the numbers approach (mmm cliche...ish). Watchable but be sure you are in the mood for gothic horror and not at all sleepy from work like I was... One big problem I had was the way the crew behaved throughout the ordeal... It's obvious that for a small vessel one can deduce the fact that the killer on board is hiding in one of the caskets.... Instead we get an overblown blame game going and there was no concerted effort to stick together weapons in hand and hunt down the killer instead of just waiting around performing duties until becoming lunch...
I fell into the extremely disappointed camp. I just saw it, and one of the things that would break this movie for me would be a survivor. And not only does he survive, he goes hunting Dracula. Like does he team up with VanHelsing or something? Like all all Dracula adaptations veer from the book, but this is a pretty big and goofy one for me. The chapter in the novel is scary and a movie could delve into giving us perspectives from different crew on how they try to make sense of it, and few scary encounters with Dracula. This one makes it apparent right away that someone is ripping open throats and the Gypsy stowaway that speaks great English really helps to fill them in. Like they should’ve been pitching his dirt boxes overboard. The movie looked great, good actors and all, and didn’t mind Dracula’s bestial look, though should have made some appearances in a human form.

Great review....I'd still like to see it. I'm cool with some good monsters and a few jump scares

It’s was ok but it’s not winning an Oscars any time soon
