Hi I greatly enjoyed this vid and its a pitty we did not get to see you catch the bass in the end, I was wondering if you could do us a vid on another type of livebait setup where you bait a small circle hook with makerel for whiting then once hooked leave it alone for the bass to get hooked on the larger hook and they dont have to endure being cast out. ive seen them using it in south wales for cod so it seems there is no reason why it would not work for bass. Ive never seen anyone doing it on youtube. I will PM you
Great video - enjoyed watching that and learnt some about live baiting for bass. I am just back from the beach having just blanked on the bass, but plenty of pouting to go around
Bit of food for thought for live baiting. I fish a normal paternoster style trace, small hook or hooks, with a bead above the swivel. While this is fishing I use a dedicated live bait rod to catch a wriggler. When the bait is caught I hook it onto a relatively short trace with a snap clip at the other end which is clipped onto the main line so it runs freely. The bead above the swivel stops tangles and the live bait trace is too short to tangle with the paternoster. When clipped on the bait can only swim down the line and does not suffer from being cast. Works a treat, just ignore the little fish hooked on the paternoster, they are for attraction, and wait for the rod to double over.
Thanks for that , I never know if I should film those nights and missed it hooked fish. I’ll try and make more of a feature of it- appreciate all your feedback
Thanks again Stephen. I went the following evening and it was 3 whiting in minutes every chuck also got the top bait a tubby little pout ! Thanks for watching

It’s going to be a great moment probably find once you have one then you’ll be on a roll ! I’ve just come back from an evening session 50 whiting but the one pout stayed live on the hook all night ! Love those pouting
A bass can travel at 15 feet per second therefore if Whiting are prolific and your catching them what do you think the odds are of them taking your whiting
Ive often thought about that , the angler has two advantages though they can position the bait in a good ambush point (such as the wave backwash , in holes ect. The other thing is our whiting will be slower than the others around it.
Nice bit of fishing, good result with the live bait, nice bass, and you weren't holding the rod ?? one day it might be a good double !! and to coin an old c b fraze, Ding Dong I'm Gone , rod n' reel swimming. We use a 'jif lemon' style float rig for live bait like mackerel and have had some fantastic success, my 14 year old daughter had one close to 5Lb last year (6 overall in an hour or so).
Ahh yes good old jiffy lemon ! For mackerel as bait I prefer free lining from the beach , here it’s shallow enough to not need a float.those tropic weighted floats are also good but plus 1 for the jiffy lemon 🍋
@@SaltwaterAngler They've redesigned the jif lemons with a flat bottom, it probably still works and people here on Anglesey use those small pop bottles as well...but why change the jif lemon?? LOL. Lovely Bass you got there, best we had this year was 2 1/2 Lb. I'm going to try more lure fishing now it's autumn to try to learn more about Bass. Thanks for the video...I'm having a few days off after fishing 7 days in a row and waiting for the pain to subside :D I will also try the free lining idea.
Hi mate quick question what would be the best way to spin a frozen sandeel? How would you present it and what type of trace? Do you use a small weight? And great video as always I'm slowly working my way through you're video's
I’d be tempted to not spin it at all, under a float or free lined and controlled nicely in a good current. You can belly hook them and have the line coming out the head. We used to use them live off Shaldon bridge to good effect. I’ve only had success with frozen when float fishing for pollack
@SaltwaterAngler ok thankyou for getting back to me. All this lure fishing is still new to me. So many lures to choose from not really sure where to start. It's mainly sandy bottom with rocks so I guess sandeel lures are probably best as they have been seen. Thanks for getting back to me I appreciate it.
Daft question but whats the casting weight range on the bass rod? Assumed it would be quite small, ie below 50g like most bass rods but noticed you were using a 3oz weight? Just a gentle underarm cast rather than overarm to compensate for the weight? Thanks
I have a question in regards to using whiting as live bait. Is there a size limit on how big it has to be? I know to keep whiting they need to be 11 inches but is it different to using them as live bait?
11 inches for livebait as well. A stinger could be useful where you have a baited small hook for them and a bigger hook so the bass eats the hooked fish
Lightness and feel although smaller continental size rods are close. Something capable of casting 3oz will be a good choice for bait fishing. I used to use my old flatty fanatic as a bass rod but their old now! I recommend bass rods to fill the gap between surf/beach casters use mine a lot
@@SaltwaterAngler would they have more off a sensitive tip than a beachcaster I'm not 100 pecent sure if I would like to use one for bate fishing at shorter range it would be decant tho to have a rod do both only thing I would be worried about is would a low oz led still be ok for the sea and I wouldn't rearly wont to get to close to max on the casting weight as I would be worried about snapping the rod
