  • Welcome to Ian's N Gauge channel!
    In previous videos I've shown how I'd extended the baseboard by a few inches, to avoid a problem that would have left foam hanging unsupported in mid air.
    In this video I'm going to make some actual progress on my build!
    After what seems like months of getting nothing done fast, by the end of the video I shall have both lower and upper levels of foam installed on the baseboard.
    If you've just got back into the hobby after a long break, then please let me know how you've found the experience.
    Alternatively, if you're an old hand at modelling in N gauge, then please impart your wisdom, and point me in the right direction, especially if you see me making a mistake or heading for disaster!!!
    Thanks very much for watching.
    Ian

    Hi Ian, a big step forward and looking great with the two levels and should add as you say another dimension to the layout! Looking forward now to you doing the actual layout in anger! Cheers Gary

      Yes Gary, I really feel like I've taken a huge step forward, even though it doesn't look that different at the moment! I know I'm still months away from laying the actual layout track, but I feel like I'm on the way again! Cheers, Ian.

    Hi Ian, having track raised gives you the opportunity to go lower or higher than the laid track and the opportunity to create the impression of the track running through the landscape. Using the foam will mean you can chop and change with ease, i do agree that too much track can look un realistic and as the saying goes sometimes "less is more". I really like the way you narrate your videos, very professional. All the best

      Hi Chris! Yes, I really wanted to be on different levels to make the landscape more interesting! I don't really have enough space to get the tracks high enough to cross each other, as the inclines would be too steep unfortunately! I agree that less is more too, it's just so tempting to add extra bits of track! The Ledge Town quarry marshalling yard was a case in point - I tried to cater for every possibility of shunting wagons into the quarry area before realising that it's actually quite a small operation, and wouldn't have warranted the amount of track work I'd assigned it! However, there's also "play value" to take into account, so I think I've settled on a good compromise! Thanks for the kind comment about how I put together my videos! They take far too long to produce for what they are, but I rather enjoy the process! All the best, Ian.

    Hi Ian, good work mate, progress at last and I bet you’re pleased to be moving on, something I would like to be doing but life in the way again! The different levels will give the layout more perspective and I’m looking forward to to see how the track goes from one level to another. Have a good week, cheers for now, John

    • @iansngauge
      @iansngauge  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi John! Thanks very much! Yes, it's incredibly pleasing to start to see some of the underlying structure of the layout eventually take shape! I've got 'life getting in the way' issues myself at the moment and am struggling to get something done for next week, but hopefully I'll make some progress! All the best, Ian.

    Hi just a quick message as I remembered seeing something that maybe useful for you.
    TH-cam user Rcgrabbag video S2:E1 at around the 3:50 mark he has a solution for points and operating them on a bridge. I realise it's larger scale than your N gauge and he's got laser cutters etc, however it could be some food for thought. He uses what looks like the exact same servos as you also. His videos are well worth a watch, very well explained and huge models with fine details.
    Me and my 14 year old have ploughed through all of your videos over this last weekend, finishing them tonight. All very enjoyable and informative. My son says they are awesome sauce (some young person lingo meaning excellent). Your videos have inspired us to build our own N gauge setup.
    Some notes and things I think may come in handy in the future if I may:
    Forster bits
    Step drill bits
    Both normally available in Lidls isle of curiosities for just a few pounds. Excellent for drilling holes in things.
    Also super glue and an activator might come in very handy for repairs.
    On the topic of losing your drop wires, I'd personally drill the hole and stick a BBQ skewer up, tape the wires to it and then pull it back through the foam and plywood bringing the wires with it.
    Keep up the sterling work.
    Stay safe, Phil & Riley

      Hi Phil and Riley! I'd not come across Rcgrabbag's channel before, but will definitely check it out! Thanks for checking out my channel! I'm glad it has inspired you to have a go at your own N Gauge layout! I'm only a beginner in this stuff myself, but have enjoyed exploring and experimenting as I progress my build! Thanks for the tips on drill bits, I've been meaning to get some step drill bits for a while, so that was a very convenient reminder for me! Haha! Yes, the disappearing dropper wires had me scratching my head for some time! I'm actually using a straw to guide them through the layers of baseboard now, as I'm trying to keep the holes I drill to less than 5mm in size! Thanks for watching! All the best, Ian.

    Your leveling up of the layout is a real leveling up. Good work, it will give the whole landscape an even more attractive look.

      Hi Valentin! Thank you! Yes, I think that having the track running on two levels will greatly enhance the landscape when I eventually get around to creating it! All the best, Ian.

    We have something else in common tropical fish! You don’t happen to have three dogs as well?
    I have two Welsh Terriers and a West Highland White Terrier. If you it is spooky! 😂

    Good to see the layout build progress Ian. You are going to have some nice variation of level using your approach, and be able to create your landscape as you go. Look forward to seeing how the track levels work once you start laying track. Stephen

    • @iansngauge
      @iansngauge  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Stephen! Yes, I'm hoping that I'll be able to lay all of the track in this area before having to think about how the actual landscape will work! I know I can build up and dig down, so I should be in a good place! The only part I'm nervous about is how the curves will work on the incline, and I guess we'll find that out next time if I can find the time to build a new test track! All the best, Ian.

    Hi Ian, an interesting video for me as I’m in process of returning to the hobby after a long break, I’m going to stick with DC and will be looking to retire soon which will give me the time. I’m following you and others and finding the hints tips etc from you and the comments to be very useful, thanks mate, it’s coming along nicely 😊

      Hi Phil! Welcome back to the hobby! Being a bit of a techie, I had to go with DCC, as it was something new in the hobby since my last encounter with it over 35 years ago! Finding useful information in the comments of videos is something that's often overlooked, but can be a mine of information! Thanks for watching, and good luck with your build! All the best, Ian.

    Evening Ian - another step forward in the great Shevington build !! Now how will the track get from the lower level to the higher section - your keeping that a secret 😅. Cheers Euan

    • @iansngauge
      @iansngauge  ปีที่แล้ว

      Morning Euan! Yes, I think this is the biggest step forward I've made in months! I think the next video will address the level transition when I build another test track, which should be out next week if I get the time to build it! All the best, Ian.
