  • Dauntsey Lock is a T Gauge (1:480 scale) model railway layout depicting the long-vanished GWR railway station of Dauntsey in south-west England. The layout is 6 foot by 2 foot in size, fully automated for exhibition running, and includes a working model canal and lock. The trains and canal boats use a linear motor track system, my own design based on a product by IDL Motors (www.teenytrains.com). More information on the layout can be found at www.modelrailmusings.weebly.com. The train sounds are from the BBC Sound Library and the canal music is "Butterflies in Love" by Sir Cubworth.

    Surely T gauge has its limitations but this layout is simply a masterpiece.
    The trackwork, the scenery and the rolling stock all create a perfect image.

      Well, uh, um, thank you! I do try, but seriously - the limitations of normal T Gauge is why I took this approach. While it has its own drawbacks, it avoids so many of the usual headaches, it thoroughly rewards the time and effort.

      @@modelrailmusings5981 Challenging limitations can also be part of the hobby I guess as every scale seems to have them.
      The bigger they are the more unique your work becomes and in this case it surely worked out.
      Not just a track with some trains but a truly amazing miniworld where trains and landscape wonderfully blend together.
      That is the making of a beautiful layout.

    Amazing detail. I was comparing this to Copenhagen fields. For T scale it fits. Thanks. This was a treat.

    Great sound track to match.

    Having messed a bit with T scale all i can say is you have done a really good job on hiding the power units and fine detailing. It would be worth putting an actual coin on the layout to show folks how tiny these trains are. well done!

    This is excellent. The lock system is particularly impressive. I'm on a hunt to learn more.

      There is a bit more on my website (modelrailmusings.weebly.com), and someone else has made a fantastic one in OO scale: th-cam.com/video/6AC0ICsoLRI/w-d-xo.html.

    • @modelrailmusings5981
      @modelrailmusings5981  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      6' x 2' (half a scale mile in length) - as large as I could manage as a single board for a transportable layout.

    I'm struggling to imagine just how tin this is. Canyou tell us in inches / centimetres how long a locomotive, carriage or wagon is so we can make the metnal adjustments, please? Fantastic piece of work by the way!

    • @modelrailmusings5981
      @modelrailmusings5981  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Most of the carriages are 35mm long, and the goods wagons 11mm. Some of the earlier under-construction videos for this layout have coins or pencils in-shot for a size reference. I really need to put something like that in every video as a standard policy.

      TH-cam is doing strange things with your other comment about SSL permissions, so I cannot directly reply to it. I've tried Firefox, Chrome and Edge and they all seem OK. Certificates and such are handled by the website host (weebly.com), and I have no control or access.

    Hi
    How many motors does it take to pull the large freight train?

    • @modelrailmusings5981
      @modelrailmusings5981  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Every vehicle is self-propelled, and in combination with the track becomes a motor, so there is no limit on train length. Each pair of wagons has 4 drive magnets, while the locos and passenger carriages have 8 each.

    If someone would create a new toy line of “Thomas and Friends”, I want them to create something like this similar to the “Tomix” range, only smaller.

    Are the sounds edited into the video, or are they playing live in the layout?

    • @modelrailmusings5981
      @modelrailmusings5981  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Edited. Although it would be surprisingly easy to implement real sound effects with this system, since the controller always knows exactly where each train is and what it is doing. A future project.

    • @AbuMaia01
      @AbuMaia01 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@modelrailmusings5981 That was what I was thinking. I was also wondering how feasible it would be to use the same PCBs as speakers, with a small magnet and diaphragm attached every X number of coils.

    • @modelrailmusings5981
      @modelrailmusings5981  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@AbuMaia01 The track and trains already generate a lot of hums and buzzes, since together they form a motor with a lot of very loose, rattling parts. Trying to combine the features would be counterproductive - keeping the track as simple as possible is important, especially for more complex pieces such as turnouts. Much easier to just put a few conventional speakers under the layout and pan sounds between them, keeping the audio completely separate.

    why so low quality video?

    • @modelrailmusings5981
      @modelrailmusings5981  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      My old camera only handles 1280x768. I tried my phone with 1920 x1080 for some of the more recent videos, but it glitches slightly. Sigh.
