Zappa's monologue and especially his delivery of the line, "I found out that Bur-NETT and Croc-KETT are the same guy" deserves a bonus. So maybe, five flamingos and one glass brick. I think the pre-credit sequence is a moody contender for the best of the series. Great episode. Easily a Top 10 episode for me. Maybe I should sort that list out once and for all. Anyway, thank you for your review!
Again so many memories from watching this one in 1986. Mystery woman sports the look that many ladies in the 80s did - poofy hair, poofy dress. Great second season episode ... Right up there with Definitely Miami.
Well I was a State Correctional Officer & I was assigned to Help keep Don Safe while he was inside the State Prison in the Payback Episode. The Best part was when myself & several others who were in the room when Roberto Duran Kissed Don Johnson in the Mouth as a Payback for having his interpreter ask him if he wanted a breath mint since they had already been through the scene several times & Don said he had a little Bad Breath.Roberto refused the mints & Kissed Don in the mouth as Payback for his comment I suppose. It was not surprising that Don was Very Very Unhappy about that Kiss but he did not voice his dislike to Roberto but did so in the hallway outside of that small room.Don stated that the video would be Destroyed by Him so that Nobody would ever see it & it appears that he did just that.Besides Don & Roberto there were at least Five others in the room who witnessed the entire scene including that KISS that Don would rather not discuss or admit ever happened.Everyone except Don got a Big Laugh out of it I would have been equally upset but I would not be denying it still here in 2021 because it's in the past & he did not initiate the Kiss other than starting the Joke on himself by asking Roberto if he wanted a Tic Tac Mint or two. LOL
First of all, Jim and a holograms, you are so cool, I am visually impaired, or or blind. So the unique way you do your videos is excellent to me, I own all five seasons of Miami Vice and what I do is, I watch your show, then I watched that version of Miami Vice Show thank you 1:53
Crockett: It was you who put Cates and DIA onto me. Castillo: Yes. Crockett: Don’t tell me.. you have a responsibility to the unit… so what do you think.? Castillo: Its not what I think it’s what I know. You're a good cop Crockett.
5:03 I believe that was when Crockett made an SNL reference when he says, "Miami been berry, berry good to me." I've referred to that reference when I've said at Renaissance events that my 19-year-old Scottish kilt "been berry, berry good to me." LOL
I've seen most MV eps numerous times, but pick up little details in these review that I never noticed such as Crockett eating the lady's food lol. Also, a ton of guest stars I never knew anything about until I watched these reviews
Surprised that at the end of this video when you say that we're staring to see more and more signs that the job is starting to destroy Crockett that you don't mention the poignant exchange between Graham Beckel's character and Crockett at the end of Payback, when after Beckell's character is shot and about to die, him and Crockett converse, with Crockett saying something to the effect of "You know what you put me through?", to which Beckell replies "You know what this job did to me?", as Crockett thinks for a moment and replies empathetically, "Yeah, I know". Seems like it would have been a natural thing to convey as a signal to the beginning of what you view as the beginning of when we see the job beginning to destroy Crockett. But hey, not trying to be too critical, these Miami Vice episode reviews of yours are AWESOME.
I was really frustrated by the lack of follow-up on the events in this episode. But it's still near the top of my list for the show. Following up all of the various ways Crockett got screwed in this episode perhaps would have required too much serialization even for Miami Vice, but I suspect the complications involved with Zappa's final illness had something to do with it.
Great video, I really love this episode too. Rumor is that a follow up episode was going to be made but had to be cancelled due to Frank Zappa's poor health at the time. One thing I like to think about with this episode is something you touched on in later videos about Crockett's changing behavior; what would've happened if it was season 3 Crockett, or even the burnt out season 4-5 version of Sonny dealing with these circumstances? This is still when Crockett is a man with hope and dreams and the first real taste of what he's going to become down the line.
Okay. Robert Crais is one of my favorite detective novelists. His main detective he uses in his novels is named Elvis! Put that aside, I recommend his books to anyone who enjoys this genre. www.robertcrais.com/novels_order.htm Demolition Angel is my favorite. Some of his novels have been made into movies: Hostage. In my opinion, this episode reflects his talent as a writer. So, I am sooo happy you gave this 5 flamingos. This is in my top 5!
So there is life on this planet. It’s very rare to find a woman who loves Miami Vice and the eighties. It would be very interesting to have a discussion with you. Greetings from Sweden.
Great review as always! I never understood a few points in the episode, though I love it just the same. For example, what was Cates’ end game for one - bringing the $3 million with him to the meeting at the end with Fuentes and two, after he killed Reydolfo and presumably Crockett, what would have been his endgame because wouldn’t Fuentes then know that Cates would be implicated in those murders as well as his still missing $3 million that Crockett was supposed to have delivered during the exchange?
Good points. And it's obviously implausible that a cop like Crockett who has arrested so many people could maintain his cover as Burnett. And certainly not after he was exposed in this episode.
Love the sexy woman's sequins and open-toed slingbacks. Sonny knows how to pick 'em. I believe this is the episode is the one where Sonny refers to SNL by saying Miami been "berry, berry good" to him. At at least a couple of Renaissance events last year, I said something like "Faire been berry, berry good to me."
End of Season 2 everything worked perfectly. So let's change the look, feel, personnel and music, to modernize it. Makes sense, huh? Hated every change except for the Testarossa, which the show runners had nothing to do with, except for the white paint job, so it can be seen at night shots.
Ok Miami Vice was some times poorly written etc but I strongly believe that concept having best possible guest Stars ( zappa) and top music is genius!!! IT did replace Milk for me as a child! Can t remember any of my dates loving Miami vice.Strange no?
I never undertanded why Moroto would decide to kill himself? Just because wanted Sonny to be incriminated? I really can't think it as a rasonable rason. Any guess?
Like your videos, but I am going to only watch the intros from now on until I get a chance to watch the episodes. Your complete, thorough summary of the episode is kind of ruining my viewing experience. While I was a fanatical fan of the show in the eighties, I do not remember how every episode was resolved.

The opening scene with Jan Hammer's music was the essence of Miami Vice. Cool, artistic, and tense.

I wanna go to that bar.

There’s a zero chance Crockett ever used those navigation charts anyways!
My absolute all-time favorite episode!!

One of my favorite episodes of season 2 ....when I feel the ich for vice this is the episode I watch first its damn good pal lol

Top 10 of the series....
3:28 Moroto's hardcore PAYBACK is redemption for "No Mas"
Great job ! love the Jan hammer music
I know this is a bit tangential, but the screen cap of Don Johnson you used at 2:48 is a stroke of brilliance. Thank you for that.
This one should've ended Season 2 on a cliffhanger. Missed opportunity!
good idea

Morgan you do such a great job with these vice videos! Love them!

I agree. Just that I would've loved to see a convertible car better
Seasons 1 & 2 are the best

Top 3 Episode. Take that to Moroto.

Guess he had a life without parole and thought it was a nice way to go out.
