Interesting to see basepaws updating the reports again. I purchased it and did my cat years ago, back when you had to use the tape (terrible experience, glad they changed to swab). I have noticed the reports get better slowly over time, the original report I got was useless.
Thank you for the feedback! As we test more and more cats, both pedigreed and mixed-breed, we are able to add new breeds & genetic health markers to our reference database and reports! All Basepaws reports come with a lifetime of breed updates :)
If I were to guess which wild cat my cat would have the most in common with, I'd say leopard because he loves to climb and be up high and leopards are known to commonly have black coats. Like many black cat owners I like to say I have a mini black panther in my home
i really needed this! my cat seems to be allergic to something and is overgrooming but even the vet doesnt really know what is the exact cause, hopefully this will shed a little light
I wouldn't recommend Basepaws as a substitute for an allergy test or elimination diet; it is not made to tell you anything about allergies or intolerances.
@@AllAboutCatsYT well at least ill be able to look at the health markers and see if there is anything there. Would you make a video about any trustworthy allergy or intolerance tests for cats? I've heard its hard and that some of them are not even reliable.
@@Nekokratic Nutriscan is an at home test kit for pets that tests for food allergies/sensitivities. They send you the test kit and you collect saliva from your cat and mail it to the lab. The most common food sensitivities are chicken and grains. Keep in mind the allergy could also be environmental allergies too such as dust, pollen, or scented products such as laundry detergent.
darn I wish the giveaway would've been outside USA too:( We adopted a 2 year old cat from our friend who mistreated him, he was born in a forest and nothing is known about his breed or health. He has mid-long/long hair and is big (5.5kg) so we think he's mixed breed but we aren't sure :( I've looked into basepaws before but it's too expensive for us :(
This is so cute. I've always wanted to test my rescue. He seems a special cross of Somalian with European Shorthair. He has orange and white areas sort of splashed out like a cow haha, and almost as much coat as a Somalian. Beautiful fluffy tail, kinda looks like a fox and takes all the behavior from that breed too. Can't wait to find out more about it!
Perhaps I’m in the minority here, but I wouldn’t mind seeing an All About Mallory video! I watch your videos even if I have little interest in the topic based on how well spoken and down to earth you seem and well, you have a super cute smile :) I have a feeling you’re a fairly private person, so I totally respect if you wouldn’t want to do that.
I'm still wondering about the accuracy of Basepaws. In addition to my three cats, I wanted to see what would happen if I sent them a swab and asked them to analyze my DNA, without knowing that I am, in fact, not a cat. They were unable to test for some of the genetic marker assays, but still reported that I was mostly a Russian Blue, Bengal and Norwegian Forest Cat! I'm also unlikely to ever have bad breath. 😹 For all the advanced technology they claim to employ, they don't appear to have a test to differentiate whether the buccal cell sample provided is from a cat or a human! I would love it if a geneticist or veterinarian could weigh in. I'd be happy to provide the report if asked!
I think the dental report is what really sells this product. Knowing the state of your cat's oral health before you go in for an exam allows you to get a read on how much care they may or may not need (without the stress of going to a vet). For cats who actually ARE a mix of pedigreed cats but don't have papers and therefore have an increased risk of genetic health conditions, knowing about those predispositions might also be helpful (if only in terms of peace of mind and awareness). And while it's the breed report that usually gets people to buy, it's probably the least useful part of the service.
Thanks...I found it on your cat tree video 😁. My cats love the smaller one and this one is a little taller so wanted to get it. I just bought a Meowington cat tree too so I will see how they like that hammock.
hey mallory, you're a nice lady. have you folks done any videos on those little cat scent thingies that you plug into a power socket? It reminds me of those glade plugins. reason is, my cats tend to give each other the ol' 1, 2 (they fight lol) and i heard that those scent thingies sometimes cause that to lessen a bit. any help is appreciated!
Very interesting! I plan to try out a number of other cat DNA tests soon and do a full roundup, so it's good to hear about others' experiences with these tests. If you'd like to share, I'd love to hear about why you prefer Optimal Selection and Wisdom Panel.
I have used Basepaws. The first test I ordered did not come with the dental kit; the second did. Both were purchased in July 2021. I have one test back for my tuxie kitten. They were able to identify more breeds than shown in the video. She's primarily in the Western Group too. I am glad my kitten didn't have any of the markers they tested for, and it's fun to see the breed makeup. However, it's not as informative as the Wisdom Panel or the Embark DNA test for dogs (which I've also done for our dogs). The really frustrating thing is that it takes a long time to get back. My last Embark test was sent AFTER the second Basepaws test and I had that back in two weeks or so (fast for even Embark). I chalk that up to Basepaws being newer, maybe not as "pup"-ular as the dog tests. I don't know that the test gave me much useable info, outside of the health screen. It's a fun package of info, but I would not expect to gain any deep insights into your cat. Maybe the upgrades mentioned in the video will improve on that.
Thank you so much for your feedback! We appreciate you sharing your experience with us. Unlike human or even canine genetics, feline genetics has been unstudied and underfunded for years. Unlike dog breeds who went through thousands of years of selective breeding, we cannot make the assumption that your cat was descended from a mixture of pedigree lines since pedigree cats are so new. However, using a large panel of purebred and pedigree cats that we have sequenced, we can try to find parts of your cat's genome that are similar to a known cat breed. It is true that feline genetics is not as widely popular as dog genetics, but our hope is to continue to study the feline genome to discover more about their breeds, genetic health, and overall health and continue to grow our database!
The coupon code no longer works on the product and there is no mention of a free dental report when I add the product to cart. You said the free dental report was included for the rest of the year, did you mean for the rest of the month? Or is it supposed to be valid still?
Hi Jessica, thanks for commenting. I'm sorry about the lack of a proper update in the description-I also just found out about the changes. So, Basepaws has done a big update, and the report now includes many more details on traits, health indicators, and more. The dental report is included, but it is not advertised as a bundle in the same way that it was in the past. I'm afraid I wasn't aware that our code was no longer working. Please try the code DNAGIFT-through December 24th, this will bring your price down to $89 and gives you a 6-month free subscription to FirstVet along with a free cat toy. I hope this helps!
Do they say what they do with the genetic material afterwards? I'd hate to have 30 copies of my cat come visit me and my cat running into that many versions of himself. That's rhetoric, by the way. I'm just saying in order to bring the issue up. Not sure I want 50 copies of my cat in a lab being tortured for "research" reasons.
I was very happy with my basepaws test that I did with my cat Sunshine, who looks like Wessie❤️❤️. As you mentioned, The main thing is to check back about every I'd say four to six months because I was one of the first people to send in a cat DNA test and his breed switched as they got more results in just like 23andMe results will get better and more accurate over time so this is why we need to keep other cat owners sending in these tests and then checking back, to see how things have changed.
Hello, I would be very grateful if you could help me.. my cat feces has a little blood and relatively large amounts of clear or white mucus. About a few months ago, when I saw blood in my cat's stool (the blood was light in color and spilled on the stool), the veterinarian injected her with several sessions of antibiotics and vitamins. About a few months later, I saw blood in my cat's stool again, and this time I noticed the sticky mucus that surrounded it, and once again another veterinarian treated him with antibiotic syrups (two Different antibiotics, 0.5 cc each for 15 days). After the end of the treatment period, I did not see any blood in my cat's stool, but today, 4 days after taking the last dose of antibiotics, I saw clear and white mucus in my cat's stool. I must also say that my cat has not shown any symptoms other than these symptoms. He eats well and plays well and looks quite healthy . Finally, I want to say that I am sorry for my broken English. And I would be very grateful if I could get an answer from you.
Hello there. I apologize for the late reply! Unfortunately, I'm not a veterinarian and can't tell you exactly what is wrong or how you can help. It sounds like you've been relying on antibiotics to treat whatever is going on, but you'll also need to identify the underlying cause of the mucus and blood in the stool. There are a number of things that can cause this, many of which are best treated with things other than antibiotics. I would advise further vet consultation.
@@AllAboutCatsYT thank you for your response, unfortunately a good veterinarian is so rare here... my cat is addicted to dry foods and I guess that eating dry food for three years is caused this damage and it seems that antibiotics doesn’t help at all.. I’m going to change my cat’s diet to canned foods and also homemade foods but it is so hard and she shows no interest for this..but I will keep on trying! also I started to give her some safe herbs and mushrooms such as reishi and shiitake to boost her immune system and I will so appreciate if you introducing me some safe herbs too.
Sounds like a paw reading (palm reading) for kitties or an in-depth astrology reading. What's interesting is that according to their privacy policy, after you pay for your paw reading, they aggregate the data and "share" it with third parties. No they are not "sharing" your specific personal data, but they probably are not "sharing" the aggregate data for free .
I think it could become a lot more interesting once they have more data on correlations between genetic markers and traits, but yes, at this time, the breed report isn't of any more practical use than a paw reading. As for the privacy issue, that's a very interesting observation; I hadn't looked at their privacy policy, so I wasn't aware of this. Thank you for sharing.
Astrology isn't really a science. DNA is a science, that they will improve on all the time. No one cares what their sign is, and you don't have to pay for that as long as you know when they were born.
