Homeless Encampment Takes On City And Wins Land

  • Holly Porter, a quadriplegic homeless woman living in a tent in Sacramento, was the inspiration and co-founder of Camp Resolution, a self-government encampment run by the unhoused people who live there. A group of homeless women rallied behind Holly to push the city of Sacramento to get her into housing.
Around 60 unhoused people call Camp Resolution home. The city supplied 34 trailers; however, the living conditions within these trailers are constrained, as inhabitants are prohibited from using essential appliances like microwaves, stoves, and air conditioning. This limitation forces residents to primarily utilize the trailers for shelter, although the Sacramento heat renders them excessively hot.
At the forefront of the battle for unhoused individuals' rights stands Crystal Sanchez, president of the Sacramento Homeless Union-an advocacy organization committed to securing housing for those in need. Drawing from her own experience of homelessness, Crystal's dedication has positioned her as a driving force in aiding Sacramento's unhoused population.
The City of Sacramento aggressively tried to intimidate Camp Resultion's residents to leave, but after a series of actions and passionate testimonies at the City Council, the city reversed its threats to raid the camp. Instead, it has agreed to lease the property to Camp Resolution for no money.
In addition, the new lease binds city officials to an agreement: The people in Camp Resolution cannot be moved from the parking lot until every resident has been placed into permanent, stable housing.
Camp Resolution stands as a testament to the proactive strides unhoused individuals are taking to improve their own lives amidst governmental shortcomings. In stark contrast to the sanctioned encampments emerging in cities throughout the United States-a direct consequence of these cities' ineffective homelessness policies-Camp Resolution distinguishes itself by its origin and administration. It is conceived and operated by the very unhoused individuals who call it home. Remarkably, this initiative manages to achieve its objectives at a mere fraction of the cost that cities expend on erecting tents on parking lots or tiny shack villages, politically referred to as tiny homes, which they are not!
Since our visit to Camp Resolution, Holly Porter has been placed into housing. The City of Sacramento continues to criminalize homelessness, often up to four sweeps a day.

I am from Sacramento and can offer some perspective. Apartments *start* at $1000 a month, a lot of working people, especially ones with kids, cannot afford an apartment. We have a lot of working people who are struggling to pay rent, we have a number of working people---like some in this video---who are houseless because of how expensive it is.

Building affordable housing, especially for disabled people, senior citizens, veterans, working class renters- all who make up a lot of the homeless population, seniors most definitely- need affordable housing,as there's a permanent housing shortage. Been this way 42+ years now. Since 1980. With all the millions of people who got here or were born since that year, a mass building campaign is LONG overdue !! The best way to help homelessness and help homeless people, is to lobby both City And politicians, and demand that housing actually. must get built right away ! It's way cheaper than jails, shelters and agencies. Studies prove this. Most people really hate being homeless. Few actually choose to be homeless. Not all homeless people are drug addicts and drinkers. Or crazy. It's stereotyping and bigotry to claim that ALL homeless people are criminals.

I love this concept, if the government refuses to be part of the solution, we should come together to find our own solution. Personally, a dream of mine is to create a tiny home community for the homeless that is self governed and somewhat self sufficient. Homelessness is the true epidemic in our country. As the rich get richer, more and more Americans are becoming homeless. Most of us are one paycheck, one life changing incident away, from being on the streets. Things desperately need to change. I go to work and find my coworkers van parked in the lot with their family inside of it, out in the Florida heat, while he is inside working. It’s not right. Everywhere I go there are people living in their cars. It’s not just Cali, it’s everywhere.

Not one single person living in the U.S should be homeless. Unacceptable and it breaks my heart. We have our noses stuck in other countries businesses and we are sending billions elsewhere. We have to take care of home first and if there are extras you send those to aid other countries. There is so much unused land that could be used as homeless camps. Provide pods with beds, air and heat and a community shower. Ridiculous. Shame on us.

I understand this type of leverage to get those RVs that are not structural safe and those creating a huge fire hazard or dumping there waste in anything other than a sewer system, but they need to have exemptions for those that are safe livable conditions. There are lots of hard-working, intelligent, capable people who have never had agency in life, SOLELY due to being born into poverty. They don’t know how to mobilize themselves above a working class existence, BUT they will always have their aptitudes and strength & beauty of character.

I'm curious; Are there any expectations or goals towards rehabilitation? I like the idea of a homeless community coming together to make a safer place, but what is the endgame with this system? I know they say they're going to embarrass the government by doing what the gov can't, and as a government hater I always love to see that ambition. The reality of the problem is that they're still completely reliant on donations, and I don't see any coherent plan for the peoples' upward progression. If these shelters aren't used as a transitionary step on their ladder upwards, the people will continue to live there which would essentially become their home. Which then of course keeps that spot taken up for anyone else who could be trying to climb themselves out of the hole.

That's what I'm curious about. I know that rent is ridiculous, and everyone knows the government is more useless than the Apple watch. Waiting on the government to set things straight is essentially hopeless. So what other plans are taking place to step these people up into their own homes?

What a shame that our humanity has shrunk to brute beasts, I take my hat of to these people great respect and love to all of them. Broke my heart poor lady, she is so lovely and how those things that call themselves men who basically left her daughter to drown. As they have sown shall they reap. God has a lot to say about loving our neighbour as ourself, love kindness compassion and empathy where is it? We are all going to be judged. For those who know to do good and does it not that is sin. I love your little community may God bless you all.

Self governed encampments... that sounds like a town. Towns have rules and need to provide services.. that costs money. Nothing is ever going to be free people.

After pouring almost 7 billion dollars into homelessness for 10 years, it only tripled. You get rid of homelessness, you take away jobs from people “helping” these homeless people. It’s never going away. We need stop depending on the government for help.

The Homeless Industrial Complex---some people are making tons of money "addressing homelessness." I think in vacaville they built 5 tiny houses, basically Tuff Sheds, for $100K a piece. Such a joke!

Jesus. A quad who is homeless and the police/fire not helping but actively harming this handicapped person. Not that you don’t hear about police targeting and harassing and assaulting and even murdering the most helpless people. What a horrific POS country we live in: where poverty is viciously punished and wealth is redistributed to the most wealthy. Good for these people.

Homeless happens when you can't pay the rent by working at a job with low wages. Maybe other stuff compounds the situation as well. It's not about being a junkie all the time, and being a junkie can be helped, too.

Word from one who was there...
The probability of getting Social Security Disability is extremely low in California.
This is one of many reasons why Californians are leaving the state!
The probability of attaining Social Security Benefits exponentially increases when applying in another state.

if only any of these comments had to live directly next to this camp which isn’t fit for human habitation and deal with the consequences of having this directly next to their neighborhood as i do, these videos will always make it seem like these communities are well oiled machines when in fact it perpetuates the issues that are already going on in the disadvantaged community of old north sacramento

    • @InvisiblePeople
      @InvisiblePeople  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

Name one suburb that’s a well oiled machine, and everyone gets along and police are never called? Humans are humans. The truth is, this, Camp, shouldn’t exist at all. The solution is housing!
I would add, people that are homeless are going through layers upon layers of trauma, and it just really sucks living outside. If you were homeless, how would you behave? I’m not justifying bad behavior. Just trying to put it into perspective.
