The British Indian Ocean Territory is home to the largest terrestrial invertebrate alive today - the coconut crab - a relative of the land hermit crab that can have a 90 cm leg span and can climb coconut trees. In this film, we follow naturalist Stewart McPherson on a life-long mission to observe full-size coconut crabs in their natural habitat.

Seeing how they consume coconuts is magnificent.
But what we all want to know is how they open them. Their claws aren't big enough to wrap around and crack them open - it looks like they somehow open a hole in the shell, but how?
@@istvanglock7445 they probably dig into them with their claws like they said in the video,they rip apart the surface fibers and continue ripping until the reach the hard part and i assume they claw at it until it breaks open and there is a visible opening they can further dig into

@@GloomGaiGar Yeah, but I think it's a lot less likely that the military of any country has "murder all coconut crabs" anywhere close to the top of their priorities. Also, citizens (which are the type of people who would come and fuck things up) don't have access to those kinds of satellites, at least not yet, and most likely not for the foreseeable future.

Ever eat one? And is that like a tail folded up under them? It looks a lot like other crabs do in the same area of their body but it looks like it unfolds, possibly to help hold on to a shell.

I was helping clean up some storm damage at an old coconut plantation in BIOT. We lifted a piece of sheet metal roofing that had blown off and a coconut crab was underneath. At that point too grown men dopped it and jumped/ran away shrieking. I've hung onto that memory for thirty years.
I was on Diego Garcia several times over 40 years ago. We were advised not to sleep on the beach at night because these crabs where everywhere. Sleep in your bungalow..not on the beach, we were told. At night the whole beach was crawling with these animals.....that was awhile ago....1979....too bad they are going away.

In Diego Garcia, Chagos and all the other atolls in the British Indian Ocean Territory, no one lives there who would kill the crabs so this is the largest concentration of coconut crabs in the world. In the Pacific they are endangered in many places.

I was in Diego Garcia in 79 and the beach was covered with them at night.

This is an evolution of hermit crab. I guess First hermit crab lived on the beach, then they found coconut, lots of coconut. They tried to break the coconut to eat things inside. Day by day, they evolute so they can live on the land, can climb the cocout. The pincers got stronger to peel the coconut...

I spent a couple months on Deigo Garcia in the BIOT. When we first arrived we were told "Don't fool with the coconut crabs....but if you do, you'll get what you deserve."

6:50 - the picture doesn't show a young or juvenile Coconut Crab ; instead, they are fully grown / adult Coenobita brevimanus ( purple land hermit crabs ).

China and India are the worlds biggest consumers of wildlife and the cause of MOST, not all. But most threatened and endangered species. Due to their population size, their dependency on seafood and their ancient remedys and supposed cures using exotic animals as food and medicines. In the past, yes. The Europeans were responsible for whaling and their dwindling numbers. But they ended up being the ones putting a stop to it and are a major factor in their new population growth as with many other formerly anf presently endangered animal. The Chinese still to this day go whaling as well as kill dolphins and sharks. Im not European, and not saying they're perfect. But they most certainly are not the cause of animal extinction.

You can find these in batanes we use to called "tattus"
Was stationed on Diego Garcia while in the navy and you see all types of crabs but the biggest and most incredible are those coconut crabs and yes they get that big and bigger. They can easily puncture a bike tire if you try to run over one . The crabs , cats , chickens and in fact all the wildlife are protected by the brits. There are parts of the island off limits to people except on special occasions and only briefly .

I have heard that these crabs were so large that they used to climb into sailing ships and carry away goats!
I have also heard that they were abundant in south India and were a menace to coconut palm growers. They have a habit of not climbing right down to the bottom of the coconut palm but jumping down from a height of about five feet. So the coconut palm growers would put up a thatched structure about five or six feet from the ground and sprinkle sand on it. The crabs would mistake it to be the ground and jump on hearing the sound of the crash, the palm grove owners would rush over and kill them.
Suddenly I got goosebumps because they remind me of spider 😭😭😭😭😭

I've seen bigger ones as kid living in samoa the one I saw well actually heard a coconut fall and looked at the tree to see a crab climbing down the tree and it went to the coconut which was a dry one and it started husking with its claws the crab was cover with white hairs it was twice the size of the coconut.

The way it dragged the coconut was creepy and the way it eats it was kind of crazy looking to. It grabs a piece with the claws and give it to the little legs to bring it to its mouth.
