I grew up in a home that had nothing but a wood stove. We could see our breath every morning and the toilet water would be frozen in the bowl. Pipes often froze and we would have to do our business outside. We would melt snow on the wood stove to get water to take baths in.
I wish we had a couple kerosene heaters back then.

I picked one up like your round on a few years ago for $5. I had to buy a new wick. My intention was to use it in in my hunting blind. But then i found a little wood stove and a Buddy heater. But it is good to know that i do have it available in case we were to lose power here in NW Wisconsin . Won't heat the whole house, but it will help.

We have had to use ours on a couple of instances. We were able to heat the downstairs with it. Kitchen, living room and one bedroom. We all just camped out in the living room and closed off the upstairs. The main thing is to keep pipes from freezing in these situations.

I grew up with Kerosene heat. My grandmother used to have an old cast iron Glendale stove/oven which towards the end (30 plus years lol) ran off of Kerosene. Then she bought a Monitor 414 Kerosene heater. Well I ended up buying the radiant 10,000BTU heater and for the last 10 years I’ve used that as my primary source of heat. I recently bought a diesel heater and it definitely falls short to the Kerosene heater that I have. Keep the wick clean and every so often do a dry burn and that heater will never let you down even during a power failure. I swear by mine.

    • @OliveDrabAlliance

I have not yet messed with the diesel heaters. I know they are all the rage in the over landing community. I have messed with propane a little, but kerosene has a long history and track record. This country used to all be lit and heated by kerosene.

The round one you had in the video reminds me of my childhood. A friend's family had one and several sleepovers we would crash out near it. As you said it was a nice radiant heat. Been planning on getting one like it, but financial plans changed when dad passed Jan 2. Appreciate the video as it brought back fond memories and helped cement my desire to obtain said equipment. Was also unaware how long the kerosene could be stored. Have an awesome week brother.

Some people say it can be stored indefinitely, but I didn't want to go there because I'm not sure about all that. You can get water in the fuel over time from condensation, especially if it isn't stored at a constant temperature. The additive can help with that. Check out FB marketplace. You might be able to find a good deal, especially after winter is over. I'm sorry to hear about your dad.

I have the big round one.
    Just for emergency heat.
    Finding kerosene is the problem.
I used to give unused kerosene to my brother and put in his heating oil tank.
I have been looking at a kerosene stove.
It's called Alpaca and I believe is made in South Korea but is available in the U.S.
If the electricity goes out then I can just use my generator to run my coal stove but if my coal stove breaks down then the kerosene would be put in action.

I have that exact same model Kero heater (round one). Its been a life saver, er, house saver, a couple times. I bought one on sale online back around 2009. I filled it up, tested it, learned how to use it. Then put it away. Then Hurricane Sandy hit 3 years later. I lost power that night and thanks to that Kero Heater I had a heat for 4 days until my electricity was restored. Temps were in the mid to high 30s F that week, so I was glad I had that heater. No worry's about frozen house and more importantly, frozen water lines if it would have been colder. That Kero Heater bought me time and options. A few observations: If you are sensitive to the fumes, crack a window or two. Also, take Kero Heater outside when lighting it or shutting it off when it's time to refuel. That little puff of black smoke that happens during startup & shutdown will happen outside. Less smell. I use Kero that can be bought at the pump as show in this vid. It is dirty/more smelly compared to K1 Kero, but, it's a heck of a lot cheaper. You can buy PINE Scent Kerosene Heater Fuel Treatment Additive. There are other scents available. And most importantly, every January, most places (Home Depot/Lowes/Walmart) put all Kero Heater's & accessories on clearance. Grab extra wicks, fuel syphon hoses, Pine Scent, and, that fancy K1 Kerosene if it's marked down in price.

I was around kerosene heaters growing up. In today's world for long term storage and safety I much prefer propane. Liquid fuels don't store as long as propane will and they are much more dangerous as a fire hazard, spilling, leaking etc. Those heaters you have do work very well, I've slept by them on many a cold night. But now with modern tech I can store propane in cylinders that take less space and the heaters don't require wicks or pouring fuels to refill. I haven't priced them to each other per gallon but I have 4 -40gal and 3 -30 gal cyl full which take up little room. If that was liquid fuel it would fill a small hut lol.

We have a 500 gallon LP tank, but to run the furnace fan would still require a little electricity. Someday when funds allow I'd like a second tank or a larger tank, enough to last 2 winters would be great.
There is a lot to be said for propane for sure. Maybe some day I'll do a side by side comparison video and break down the BTUs storage and cost. It's an interesting topic for sure. Thank you

@@OliveDrabAlliance Our back up generator is propane fueled. We run it for 2-3 hrs and it'll power the furnace, fridge, freezer and some lights etc. The fuel really goes a long way doing intervals like that and we maintain everything. We have a couple smaller Buddy heaters when we want to heat the room we're in. But the cooking and everything being propane allows us to have a 1 fuel source for everything power, heat, cooking which is clean and cost efficient. I wish we could have a outdoor tank but we are not allowed too.

Excellent point about the wick. Houses are "drafty" enough that even in the best sealed up house all of the air in the house will be exchanged in 12 hours. Most homes don't even take that long, but a carbon monoxide/CO2 detector is a good idea anyway. We had a bird make a nest in our chimney once and we all got real bad headaches and felt like crap. It caused a buildup of gasses in the house. At that time we had a regular furnace and even that could cause a dangerous build up.
      Thanks for watching.

Not sure how well you can use it indoors?

We have used kerosene Heat many times indoors during winter outages. I keep a supply of kerosene on hand and burn up a portion each year to help keep a fresh supply. As long as your wick is set right it burns very efficiently.
If it is a new heater, burn up a tank of fuel with the kerosene heater outside to burn off any oils from the factory, paint etc. somebody also said when you light it, light it outside until it's gets going, then bring it in. Same thing when you turn it off. I've never done that, but it could help.
Even the best sealed homes exchange all the air inside with air from outside every 12 hours or so. Most homes are closer to every 2 hours. You should have a CO2/carbon monoxide detector anyway, because even a regular furnace can cause that. Let the heater cook down fully before refueling and follow the safety guidelines and you'll be just fine.
Thanks for watching & take care

I tried pump kerosene from the gas station but i noticed the wick would clog faster. Half a gallon down i would have to dry burn the wick again. I switched back to the hardware store stuff. I only burn about 2 to 3 gal a year heating my garage.

That's weird. I've burned tanks and tanks of gas station kerosene and haven't run into that... I wonder.... Is your gas station kerosene dyed red? I've heard the red dyed stuff has issues.
