(Nice, Jason! I do have a question about the resources in your area though. I just watched a Canadian lad do a similar challenge. He displayed the layers of his clothing, including fishnet base, gloves, and felted bootliners. Explained the plan -- two fires, the first under a biggish rock to heat it up and then bury the coals under it with dirt and green boughs, the second a few feet away, to be fed all night. Oh, and he had no tools at all. Found a decent amount of yellow birch bark and kindling, and a forked branch to serve as fireboard plus a suitable bearing block and bow for his bootlace. Used exposed rockface to shape tools as needed, so far as that was possible. After working like a dog still no fire as sunset approached. So he took off in the fading light to search for one last chance -- a tree fungus called chaga. It's called the fire fungus up there. He finally found some -- about 8 or 9 feet up the side of a birch. A stick brought down 3 pieces he could use. The friction fire finally succeeded and the plan went into action. He was even able to sip a few drops of melted snow from the edge of the heat sink boulder! My question is -- anything like chaga in your neck of the woods? I'm guessing even good fatwood might not make an ember -- and apparently the chaga dust doesn't either, but once an ember is on it, it's almost inextinguishable.
You could sleep there...sitting up. I know it's possible because,.. . true story,... yesterday at the hardware store, one of the cashiers was dozing off while standing up. No joke. lol 😆
Such a sweet fire. and process. I am going more and more to building on a upside down fire platform, more of those rotten easy picking logs crossing layers and then fire on top. On a real over nighter one would need a car size pile of wood before it got dark. If I doze off, great but I wouldn't want to wake up to a dead fire. a coal bed that won't go out is only gained by lots of wood. Like that bon fire at new years when you come back out in the morning and its still a coal bed kind of fire. The conditions you had were pretty bad but they can get much worse. I keep thinking of the utuber up in norther Sweden that dies in the snow storm, kind of bad.
You have no idea how irritating it is to watch a guy cut a big log into kindling and then complain that fires take so much work to maintain. Dude, just put it on whole, tf is the matter with you?!

Is something wrong with the pine trees. Looked very poor, not many branches or pine needles. Thanks for the informative video.
Looks like a nice spring day... :-)

I would have used a few of the bigger sticks for a fire bed
