I really want to explain to him how it's able to let you jump in and play mid-video but..... I don't think anyone cares.....
    ...
    Well I want to anyway.
No it doesn't use save states, because it lets you continue from any instant, not every couple seconds. Instead, the video is the game running in real time, and a record of gamepad inputs. Especially since its an older game running on an emulator, you can tie a set of inputs to every single frame. So you could say on frame one these buttons are being pressed, frame 2 these ones, etc. It takes up nearly no space compared to an actual video file or even a bunch of save states.
The other confusion might come in, well what if the game has a randomization element? Random number generation in computers uses the computer's "clock" (not time of day, but number of CPU cycles since it was turned on). Since this clock is incredibly fast, there is no way a human could predict what number they will get when they play the game. But an emulator can lock down those random numbers to be the exact same every time, since the game plays back the exact same every time. So the clock starts at zero at the start of the record and counts up at the same rate, adding a set amount to the emulator's fake clock for the game to use, each frame. It could also be included in the recording (for example, Frame 344 these buttons were pressed AND this clock number was requested in-game).
If you want to see this in motion, you can look up TAS (Tool-Assisted Speedruns) to see speed runners essentially "cheating" the game. Placing inputs at their leisure one frame at a time, then playing it back. This allows the community to find the theoretical limits of a game, without needing to rely on human reaction time and input mistakes.

AFAIK what you said about RNG isn't true; video-games (and computers as a whole) use instead algorithms that provide a series of pseudo-random numbers (as in, they look random for an observer, but are actually the same sequence if you start from the same number). Functionally it's kinda like instead of using dice for a board game, you use a very long list of pre-rolled numbers, one that any computer can generate on the fly.
That could lead to an issue with the same sequence of "random" results appearing in different runs; to solve this issue the RNG (random number generator) is usually "seeded" with a starting number that, ideally, is different for each run, meaning you start from somewhere in the middle of that list. That is where the clock does often plays a part; it's usually the easiest way to provide a random enough starting point to "seed" the RNG.
BTW, you don't need to handle the RNG separately because it's just a function and associated data in the game's program, which is thus stored in memory, and as a consequence saved in the savestate; if the emulator is stable you are guaranteed to reach the exact same result if you start from the same initial state and supply the exact same inputs.

Ah yes, they rereleased Crystalis for $40 and bundled some free games with it!
Jokes aside, I'm VERY glad collections like this are getting made again, the more retro games available on modern hardware, the better

3:38 my guess is, the 'video' is saved as a record of button inputs on every frame, rather than a literal image capture. You're watching a script actually play the game, and you can just stop the script playback to take over yourself. Tool-assisted speedrunners use this kind of thing all the time.

why did you hate stretch mode so much?, I use it all the time, cause I don't like seeing wasted space in my tv, it makes me feel bad everytime you say that i'm a horrible person for liking it.

    • @YSN
      @YSN  5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

I'm not being serious, it was just supposed to be a joke. Everyone can do what they want obviously and sorry that what I said made you feel bad.
The reason I keep bringing it up is because seeing something that's clearly distorted really bugs me a lot. I used to work as a graphic designer, so making sure things are in proportion with each other is something I used to spend a lot of time on. Me and other people in the business have seen our work being stretched "to fit spaces" countless times which basically ruins all the hard work and hours put into our projects. There's nothing quite like the feeling of agonizing over pixels for hours to make something perfect and then have someone come by and completely disregard that by stretching the image. I think people who work on video games probably have a similar reaction when they see their old 4:3 game stretched across a wide screen.
That being said, I know people don't do it to piss other people off. When I bring it up in videos, it's just to show support to fellow creative types who feel the same way as me.
Anyway, that was a really long explanation. I hope you enjoyed the video regardless!

@@YSN I wouldn't say I'm too upset over what you said but it did to me sound close-minded. Nice explanation though but most people aren't graphic designers so viewers aren't going to get that's why you say that, so even though that's the intended meaning most people will think you just sound ignorant and dismissive of others personal preference. The feeling you get from seeing your pixels stretched out is the same feeling I get when I see two giant black bars on the side. So irksome :S So just suggesting taking into consideration how most of your viewers might take away from that. Still just a vary small comment you made but I thought I'd just give some feedback

Hello, i love this channel and your dedication towards retro gaming. Just wanted to ask you or anyone who is looking at this post; that since past couple of months i am trying to find out one old NES type soccer game which is more like anime style gaming where we play as a protagonist and regarding the gameplay there is only one player displayed on screen while dribbling the ball and the players can shoot the ball with super powers like in Shaolin Soccer.... If the power is op then the keeper fly away like an airplane and the goalpost net is destroyed and so on..... I used to play this game when i was a kid and now i am 33. I am quite sure that lot of other players played this game as well and it would be a great appreciation if anyone tells me the name of this game. I am really desperate right now..😫😫😔😔.. ( Note::: It is not GOAL franchise, which has also super power shootings like in cartoons..) Thank you in advance.. 🙏🙏🙏🙏

Interesting that SNK is doing this. Like making a "virtual console" for the switch. 20 titles at $2 each for a total of $40. Not sure which SNK consoles had those titles, does that include the neo geo pocket color or just the other neo geo consoles? Neo geo pocket color tried and failed to compete with the gameboy.

Nintendo probably couldn't fit the whole selection of games, on a single cartridge, and so DLC made MUCH more sense, as opposed to putting out a new cartridge. I really hope they put the bottom of the barrel online, for download, so that, in ten-fifteen years, when Nintendo isn't hosting the content, anymore, I wouldn't have to give up the good games. Of course, I wouldn't buy it, on Switch. It actually _does_ have the graphical capabilities (😂), but the Switch's JoyCon controls, for arcade and fighting games, are garbage, if you're going mobile or -- because the Switch's POS "Pro Controller," which is $56, is poorly designed _and_ executed, with easily fraying analog caps and a horrible, blocky design, molded in third-rate plastic, is a huge waste of money.
Besides, with the PS4, I can take any of three mobile devices and play everything, with a *much better and cheaper controller* than the Switch (2017; 6.2" screen @ 220 dpi). An iPad (the onscreen controls are better than a JoyCon, but even an MFi controller -- either the SteelSeries Stratus or a MadCatz C.T.R.L.i, are $30 - $45), as well as a _far superior display,_ on an iPad Air 2 (1994; 9.7" screen @ 264 ppi), an iPad mini (2015; 7.9 inch screen @326 ppi) -- or just *far, far* better built-in controls and a better screen (2012; OLED screen @ 220 ppi, with much deeper blacks -- and the "casual," colored Japanese models (@220 ppi).
