    Unpopular opinion: I preferred the way the 819's whistle sounded when it was busted. More specifically - I like the way it sounded at the start of its 1988 trip. It sounded distinctive, and (to me,) gave the engine a unique voice no other locomotive has. I honestly don't think it even sounded bad (until later that is, when it started fully coming loose.) I don't mind it now that it's been fixed, but the old squeak definitely made the Cotton Belt stand out, and is one of the reasons she became my all-time favorite engine.

    We lived in Pine Bluff 1944-1951. Old depot looks as I remembered it. Family rode Passenger trains to visit relatives. I was a school boy but fondly remember those trips behind the steam engines. Always a pleasant trip. As I recall, that depot was a busy place in those days.

    I love this engine and I'm friends with Joseph Darrel Cason who was one of the crew that worked on this engine, and he was also a fireman as well on this engine. I wish he got to be engineer.

    I believe that if the museum donated 819 to UP steam, that Up would rebuild her. Lets be honest that museum can’t fix it up alone

    • @brucetharpe762
      @brucetharpe762 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Nothing is impossible, but the 819 is very underrated unfortunately in today's world of steam, and she needs to be advertised on the internet, or some other platform to gain support and funding for her restoration. The volunteers also need time, and parts to devote themselves to 819.

      WP67GT500 1 We can sure dream, but I’m certain UP is happy with what they currently have. 5 steam locos (2 of which are operational of course, 4014 and 844) is a lot already.

      As far as I know, it's still in storage at the old shops along with 819 and most of the associated rolling stock.

      I was at the museum a couple months ago, and the auxiliary water tender was on the track to the right (driver's side) of #819. If I remember correctly, it has the number "814" on the back.

  • @edwinsinclair9853

    Don't you just love all the people standing in gauge and on the rail itself. Completely oblivious that other trains might be using those mainline tracks while their attention is completely on the 819. Unfortunately, one of the reasons that most class one's won't run steam locomotives because of safety and liability on their property. People get focused on one thing.

  • @nitetrane98

    Lot of comments on the whistle. IIRC the whistle had been cut down for some reason during it's first rebuild and actually used to sound much better.

      If only UP could at least help them get it back to operating condition and help save this locomotive, that would be a hell of a dream, just sucks that this engine was a beast and it definitely had potential and it still does.
