    Thanks for this video! I watched it when you first made it, and knew the day would come when I'd need it. The filing part took a bit longer for me, but still only about 15 minutes. I'm impressed that you were able to install it alone. I had my two teenage sons helping, and it was still a challenge, but we got it done, and now carrying the bikes is much easier! 😀 Anyways, thanks again for the great video.

    Thx Rick. I struggled for quite a while watching a couple videos on the installation and was about to give up after watching a video that said you had to lower muffler. Didn’t think I could re attach rewatching yours the key was lifting the rear driver side. Bingo needed that extra room to finagle hitch without lowering muffler. And did it solo. Quite proud of myself. You da man Rick!

    Rick, I finally got the Curt installed on my wife’s 2018 Crosstrek.........you must have arms the size of a wrestler! I had a younger guy help me lifting the hitch up to the sub-frame and we struggled......I didn’t fell too bad because I’m over 70 but the other guy was 26 and no slouch.......surprised that Curt didn’t see fit to use longer bolts for the front holes since the addition of the leveling blocks really keeps the bolts from extending all the way into the nuts........had to check afterwards to be sure that the bolts were all the same length......your video really impressed me after installing my hitch....all’s well that ended well........the overall install is very well thought out, hitch weight to lift aside!

      Hi Steven, thank you for letting me know the video was helpful. That is what it is all about! Happy towing and carrying stuff! Cheers.

    Just finished putting one on my 2019. Video was on-point and covered everything I needed to install. 1-ish hour install with wife's help. Spacer makes it level/in-line with back end of vehicle; no spacer would make it more level with roadway. Will be personal preference. I would suggest lining it up with bolts and then supporting it (hitch end) with a jack. You can only hold that thing up so long...I found out the hard way.

    Just as he did, I also did the tape to keep the washers on, and also used the muffler to temporarily support one side while I bolted the other side. That said I didn’t have a file so I used a corded Dremel with a metal coned tip (worked well but would have preferred a file for more control in a tight space). That was a very interesting install (don’t want to think about the headache if you got a bolt stick in the frame….). I did myself as well, but would recommend 2 people as well if you can.

    Came across this searching for bike racks. I just installed this on Friday, but I removed the tail lights, bumper cover & impact bar. So much easier to access the frame rails (hand fits right in) vs cutting a hole & trying to fish the bolts/brackets into place. All done in under an hour.

    Hi Rick, I'll offer a few points to others who have not yet installed their hitch systems. I liked the way you filed a square slot instead of drilling a larger hole as I've seen in another video about installing hitches on the CrossTrek from a hitch manufacturer. The only thing I would say is to make equal sized squares on either side of the hole (vs just on one side as you did on yours). The reason for this is that the integrity of the frame is compromised less when you do it this way, and from what I've seen, the frame in this area is less than beefy. Another thing I'd suggest is to use the center hole for the filing to get the backing plate in there, leaving the remaining holes used for mounting untouched.

      Thank you very much for the tips and suggestions. I always appreciate it. It is my favorite mod. :)

    • @ptmalm
      @ptmalm ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheJackShack I believe that I made that comment prior to installing the hitch. If I recall correctly, two of the holes are smaller than the third (front one?). I think I probably went ahead and filed only the larger hole to minimize material removal. From a strength perspective, I'm not sure if the added support from the front/rear mounting would negate any issues with enlarging the center hole, but again, as I recall, I enlarged the larger hole. It would be good to know how you did yours.

    I was able to do it solo after watching you. **tip for those trying it, make your notch whole big enough for both bolt head and retaining bracket. At first i only made it big enough for the bracket and the bolts could fit, had to file it down a bit more. Test everything before you commit.

    Great video. It gave me a good heads up for installing my hitch. I did find that the left side (driver's) was a little harder to access for opening up the hole in the frame. The exhaust was in the way. I was able to install the hitch myself in about an hour. In all, very easy install. Thanks for the video

      Great video Rick, I agree with Ken wrt driver side hole. Took m about 2 hours if I don't count the interruptions. I used jack stands to hold hitch up. square file is way to go but make sure bolt will go in thread side first because the angle requires a little more access then the bolt head first attempt. Also, torquing down the driver side front bolt was challenging to get the wrench/extensions into position with muffler/pipes. I think if I had to do it over again I would take off exhaust.

    Excellent vid. I installed the same hitch on my Trek, and yes, getting the hitch up in place is the most difficult, with only yourself (as I did as well). The blocks of wood held it in place, and made it a lot easier.

      Hi Steve, I was able to do it with out removing the muffler. It really isn't a bad job at all. Just pick up a small file if you don't have one and you'll be fine. Nice to have a helper to lift the lift up when ready, but otherwise it really isn't bad. Happy to help anytime with Crosstrek questions. I appreciate your watching.

    First off, thanks for making this video, it was very informative as to what you get with the hitch and the steps involved for install. Second, after doing this same install this afternoon, I think you made your life harder by putting the car on stands first. I'm 5'9" and with the car on the ground, I was able to prop the hitch up using a knee while I got the nuts started (the hardest part.) There's a little less clearance when initially getting yourself and the hitch under the car, but definitely doable.

      @DinkDiink 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Chaz I was working on installing my hitch yesterday and had the hardest time getting the bolts into those holes. In this video he made a small cut on the side, but after fitting the washers in, the head of the bolt wouldn't fit. We had to bore out that hole much larger than this video shows. I was wondering if anyone else ran into this issue? I thought a file would do it, but it took hours with a file and only got one side done. I didn't use jacks either, I had plenty of clearence to work.

    • @chaz720
      @chaz720 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I used a taper file so I ended up with a triangle shaped notch, but it was similar in size to what is shown here, maybe a little smaller. I do agree that the bolt head will drive the size of the notch you need, not the washers. On the first side I would file a bit check the washer, file a bit, etc. then when the washer fit I started trying to feed everything though and got the bolt stuck. D'oh! I had to take the bolt off the fish wire and continue filing with the washer laying in the frame rail and holding the fish wire off to the side, not ideal. On the other side I used the bolt head to gauge when I was done filing.

    • @DinkDiink
      @DinkDiink 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yea I messed up and dropped the washer in the hole and spent another few minutes trying if fish it out. I ended up borrowing a dremel for the 2nd hole and went much quicker. Installing the actual hitch took less than 20 minutes. If anyone is reading this who plans to install the hitch yourself, I recommend using the bolt to measure the hole by, don't attempt to use a file, it'll take forever. Have a ratchet extension for your ratchet and torque wrench and when positioning the hitch in place start with the driver's side first, put bolts in to hold it in place then move on to the passenger's side. Also, I'm a smaller framed women and I had my sixteen year old daughter helping me. If we had the proper tools on hand (and had the dremel to start with) this job would have gone much faster, but sadly my tool box is lacking in most things. All in all, this video is a great tutorial on how to install the hitch. It's not that diffacult and doing it yourself can save so much money to put towards other things like a really nice bike rack.

      I believe that little section had to be cut out if I remember correctly? My 14 had the section you are referring to, but i don't think it was replaceable? There is still a hidden hitch that can be purchased, but it is 400 vs 150. Thank you for watching!

    I just got my Xtrek last week and will be installing a hitch soon. I like this car-so far-but it's strange that the designers opted to remove the bumper pass through that was available on earlier models.

    • @AZdroptop
      @AZdroptop  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      HI And congrats on the new Crosstrek. Well, the pass through is still there, its just that the wiring harness is too big to fit through. One subscriber, Jaime Diaz, cut the harness then used wiring connectors to reconnect after passing through the hole. I plan to follow his routing just need to take the time to do it. Here is his link if interested. Good luck with the install and let me know if I can help. www.subaruxvforum.com/forum/subaru-xv-members-journal/158361-my-2018-crosstrek-limited-build-thread-5.html

      Btw, I'm wondering if we're on separate pages about the pass-through. The thing I'm talking about is the 'blank' that used to be on earlier models. In the following link, it's the red trapezoid shape located on the bottom of the rear bumper... www.torquenews.com/sites/default/files/styles/news/public/image-1084/a-crosstrek_upgrades_2017.jpg
      I've seen people use it to hide their hitch receiver. My bumper doesn't have it. Does yours?

      Oh ok, I know what you are talking about now. Sorry about that. Yes, my 18 does not have the cut out, but my 14 did. I thought you were talking about a place for the wiring to come through. :) Sorry about that. The link did not work for me by the way.

But when I think of it, theres no room for us to move the hitch when installing it because the holes on the car are just big enough for the bolts. im thinking its the car's frame? when i screen caputred your video, i noticed that yours is the samm its really unoticable, but if youll pay close attention you can tell that is probably couple centimeters off.

      The Crosstrek was a great car for me because I wanted something comfortable for the road with the ability to go off-road on easy to moderate dirt roads. It has plenty of room for day to day stuff, but can get a little cramped with 4 adults and a good amount of gear. Great options for the money and decent MPG.

    Really like the idea of just cutting a slot instead of hogging out the bolt hole. Some of the online installations really butcher the sheetmetal.. When installing the wiring kit will you run it under the car or under the hatch ? I always thought the hatch pinching the harness will eventually cause problems.

    • @AZdroptop
      @AZdroptop  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you. I agree, some really cut it up unnecessarily. From what I can tell there are already holes with caps underneath so I plan to run the wires under the car and into the rear area near the spare and over to the built in wiring. Not super familiar with the process yet, but that is the tentative plan. :)

    Very well detailed video. A hitch is one of those things I feel the Crosstrek needed from factory, and I was a little afraid of having to either install one or pay someone to put one on but this hitch looks amazing and installation (though taxing) looks pretty straight forward.

      HI Andr'e, thank you very much! If you have someone along to help lifting the hitch up the install really is very straight forward and I think you'll be able to handle just fine. No clearance issues at all after about 10,000 miles. Best of luck and thank you for watching.

    Tounge weight and tow limitations are alot less on the Crosstrek itself, the hitch is beastly with a 2" receiver but you wouldn't be able to tow to it's limit. Good thing is you have more options like bike racks and foldable baskets.

    I watched the install video on the etrailer.com site for Crosstrek. They strapped off the exhaust system, unhooked the exhaust hangers and lowered the exhaust a bit. Hi Rick! Have you checked your mounting points lately at the frame? Is it still holding? Some folks have noticed tearing of the frame when they maxed out the tongue weight. For example, tongue weight on their hitch may be 500 pounds, but that amount of weight is stressing the frame and tearing where the hitch is bolted to the frame. Thanks in advance for responding.

    • @AZdroptop
      @AZdroptop  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow that doesn't sound good at all! I just went out and checked and I have no indication of a problem that I can see. I don't think I have had a huge amount of tongue weight on there however. What are folks overloading it with? Like a motorcycle hitch carrier or something like that? The Crosstrek's max tongue weight is 200lbs, but this particular hitch has a tongue weight of 525.(Only good if the car it is on can handle it) Thank you very much for letting me DadManDude! Good video Rick. I have installed 2 of these hitches in the past...Crosstrek and Outback...and am amazed that Subaru does not manufacture built-in threaded holes to mount a trailer hitch into the frame...that would make the install a breeze. Thank you Steve and congrats on the 19! Very cool. I got my hitch for similar purposes and it has worked out great. No hit on mpg unless I am towing my trailer a lot and it makes a nice place to mount the gopro. :) I bought the harness from etrailer.com as well and it is just a plug and play. At this point I tuck the set up under the back mat and just hang it out the back and under the hatch door when I need it. No issues so far. As you will see in the the linked video the harness does not fit through the Subaru provided holes. My plan is to clip the plug off, feed it through, and then reconnect the plug with a splice. Thanks David, I thought about the jack stand, but I don't think it would have extended up high enough. It took awhile to wrestle it up into place, but honestly even doing it myself it wasn't that bad. God bless you as well and thanks for watching and commenting. Cheers

    Nice job! I've installed three of these (02WRX crosstrek and a jeep cherokee) Sometimes you can balance the hitch on a floor jack. but regardless its always interesting by yourself.

      It was mine ,the exwifes and the new girl friends. The WRX was easiest. The crosstrek was the toughest to get on.

    Good day Rick. I like your videos. I just ordered a Crosstrek and I want to install a hitch. The question I have is: why did you file the end hole instead of the middle hole? Seems to me that leaving both end holes (where the bolts are installed) intact would be better. Thank you in advance.

    • @AZdroptop
      @AZdroptop  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Dennis, thanks for the question. I think in the long run it is just easier to file the rear hole so when you put the rear metal washer through you don't have to mess with feeding it through? I bet you could use the middle one if you want to...I just followed the directions. :) Best of luck and thank you for watching the video.

    in my looking for a hitch I found Subaru specs saying 1000 lbs tow load continuos or 1500 in shorter runs. EEK! That's not much! I think they are going for longevity (of your transmisison)?

    • @AZdroptop
      @AZdroptop  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep, 1500 lbs is it here in the states. I believe it is a bit more in other countries. I generally don't tow more than about 500.

    I know this is a silly question but I have a 2019 crosstrek, would this same hitch be compatible with the 2019? Thanks!

    • @AZdroptop
      @AZdroptop  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      As far as I know Subaru didn't change anything with the body or frame so you should be good to go no problem. I just checked etrailer.com and they don't have hitches listed for the 19 yet, but you could always give them a call to double check. Best of luck!

    i didn't have to file down the hole like you did I was able to just send the nut and washer though the larger hole and place them into the smaller... then just put the bolt and washer inside the larger... no need for the cutting of the frame

  • @jaasun71
    @jaasun71 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I used two 5 gallon buckets to hold the hitch up while I installed the nuts. The hardest part of this is getting the nuts on. Dealer wanted $250 to do this !

      I know right! Crazy install cost. Nice job on the using of the buckets! Much better than my ninja skills :)

    Hey Rick! Little while since we spoke. Experience any issues with departure angle after installing this bad boy?
    I know there’s the eco hitch mount which is like $400, but can’t justify that price for having the removable hitch point.

    • @AZdroptop
      @AZdroptop  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      HI Drew, good to hear form you. I haven't noticed anything significant with the hitch on there other than when I leave the ball receiver on while off road. Have scraped that a couple of times, but no issues when it is off and the hitch makes a nice camera mount. :) I agree with you on the ECO hitch, very pricey!

    I've been looking around at cars and your videos are helping me narrow down my choices and I am leaning towards the 2018 Crosstrek. The only things I have to decide on is a base model (and mod it up myself) or the Premium. Do you or any of your viewers know if on the base model of the 2018 Crosstrek if the spots where the fog lights are (they look like covers) can be popped out to install fog lights? Also I suck with doing electrical stuff. Electricity hates me so if and when you do the wiring harness please record it lol. Thanks for all your videos!

    • @AZdroptop
      @AZdroptop  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi momo I am glad to hear the videos have been helpful. I honestly do not know if the wiring is there and just the fogs are missing? Or if there is nothing at all except the space for them. I can check with my Subaru buddy and I'll let you know what he says. Why are you leaning towards the Base over then Premium? They are less than 1,000 different in base price and you get a good amount of extras for it. The all weather package and fogs are probably worth it? Thank you for watching!

    • @AZdroptop
      @AZdroptop  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It looks like the kit is a little pricey at 335 to 375 bucks and sounds like it comes with all the stuff you need including wiring. Here is a link to instructions.subaru.oemdtc.com/690/h4510fl001-fog-lamp-kit-2018-subaru-crosstrek

    • @momochangames
      @momochangames 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I just don't need all the extras that come with the Premium. I may end up having to go that route but I'd prefer not to (I really don't need paddle shifters) which I've seen on all the Premiums I've looked at.

    • @AZdroptop
      @AZdroptop  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I hear you. It is good to save where you can for sure. That is how I felt about Navigation and eyesight. Cool features, but I didn't want those either. To be honest if I could have gotten Sirius/XM in a Premium I would have gone that route. At this point I am happy with the Limited because I absolutely love the Push button start and touch to unlock. Didn't thank that would be a big deal, but I love it!
      I will say this for the paddle shifters...they are nice when you are going up 6% plus grades on the highway..helps to put it in manual mode and use the paddles to stay in they gear you need to keep the rpm's up so it isn't always shifting. Best of luck and let me know if I can answer any other questions.

    • @momochangames
      @momochangames 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I guess I can always build it on the Subaru website and if a dealership doesn't have it in my area they could ship it but then you add shipping charges to it. I like trying to do things on my own. I will keep you updated on what I end up doing :)

    • @AZdroptop
      @AZdroptop  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you Brad, it has been a lot of fun finally doing some real mods to the car. At this point, other than putting on the black center caps when they arrive, I don't have any immediate plans. I have an amped sub that was in the 14 that I thought about installing, but I am pretty happy with the sound right now so I'll probably give it to my son. I think I will get out and do some more off road stuff and determine if a Lift is worth the time, money and further changes to the ride characteristics. Thank you for watching and commenting on her Brad...Cheers

      Great video Rick! Thank you so much. I had trouble getting a torque wrench with any extension/no extension on the rear driver side bolt. The exhaust or struts get in the way in any orientation. I had a to use a shorter socket wrench and tightened it down as hard as I could (prob around 80/90 ft lb). The rest of the bolts are confirmed 110.

      Awesome Jim, best of luck with the install. The file I used was a smooth round file with very fine teeth, but I think any smooth file would do fine.
