I'm not feeling stuck. But I deeply admire Watts' voice. Realizing it's a little better now is just as good a reason to come back as feeling stuck. :) Hope you feel more motivated towards life. Cheers
This video screams to anyone who will listen to follow your passion. It cannot be said any better. Find your passion. This is one of the best I've seen.
Hopefully you continued on that path because most just get sucked back in by the bs, watch this video once a week until you are doing what you love, I am and I still watch it... It puts a smile on my face and a tear in my eye Everytime.
I'm from Beirut, Lebanon. I work on writing and drawing by myself on essays and sketching projects. It doesn't make any money. But I don't care. It allows me to be creative, and skilled with a pencil and paper. Not on the computer. Even though I don't have any money, I'm happy with it.
Me too, I must have listened to this a hundred times, Ive taught my sons this also and they havent suffered the mistakes I made as a young man, Thank you Alan wherever you are.
And I'll be teaching my son this, too, so he doesn't suffer from the same mistakes I made. I only wish I'd discovered Watts when I was a young man! Such wisdom, such compassion -- and, of course, none of it anywhere near our schools or our culture.
i have heard this speech like 5 years ago , have been coming back to it occasionally thru these years still dont have a clear answer. For me its kinda became the point of life to finally find an answer.
BornSlippy I would recommend listening to more videos from Alan and you can also try Actualized.org . Assuming you already haven’t, you will probably go through a nihilistic stage where you realise everything is meaningless then transcend that by realising you construct all meaning and can really live the life the way ‘you’ want it to be, as if you were just playing. Some of the concepts that helped me along the way over the last 5 years where Spiral Dynamics model, Non-duality, dissolution of ego, spiritual enlightenment etc. I’m by no means enlightened, so I’m in the same boat as you but recently went through a necessary existential crisis to come full circle in better understanding life, existence and personal development. Hope some of these references will help you along the way. Just a word of warning, becoming radically open minded to self explore these concepts can lead to some emotional hardship. I recommend doing this when in a stable stage in your life.
Life lesson: you only figure out what you desire through direct experience, not simply through introspection. So go out there in the world and try as much as possible, then sit down and ask yourself what you did desire.

I recomend reading Mastery from Robert Green. Study your childhood have already the answers of what do I desire. It's more on a abstract level than it's painting or writting or any other direct path. But basically when you was a child, you exactly knew what you liked or don't liked.
If you say that getting the money is the most important thing, you will spend your life completely wasting your time. You will spend your time doing things you don't like doing in order to go on living, that is to go on doing things you don't like doing, which is stupid! ~ Alan Watts
Hey Edwar... you are back... what year is it? Did we make it? Are we living the dream? I hope we did and u are just watching this video looking for this coment you left years ago as a promise. A promise to ourself that one day we will be happy. Living our dream with no regrets and if you have one of those regrets or several. I want you to know that it's ok!! You are worth it. So just enjoy it... and if you couldn't make it real yet.. it's ok too! You are on your way... so keep being strong little boy... I am so proud of the man you've become. I love you.
You know I realize I dont know what I desire, or question if I even should desire at all. Seem to change so much, i feel lost, and dont know where to invest my time. Im so fearful these days of waking up at 50 or 60 and think wtf, why was I even here.
I wanna make coffee, as well as I can for as many people as possible. I want to ski as many mountains as I can, for as long as I can, and share the joy it gives me with as many people as I can. I want to fall in love, and spend every day of my life showing it. I want to do all of this, live a life full of diing it knowing I coukd die at any time and still be satisfied. Thats what I desire.
Growing up without money isn't fun, it's horrible. This makes sense if you have money from your parents. Having nothing, not being able to travel, not experiencing anything, sitting on a step smoking a cigarette on a hot summer nite with no air conditioner isn't fun. This is misleading, it's easy for someone to say they don't care about money, when they know full-well they could have it if they needed it. Additionally, all the clips from this show people doing things that REQUIRE money, climbing a mountain or bungie jumping? Get ready to dish out a couple grand
You misunderstood him mate. He is not saying that money is not important, he is saying that it is not THE most important. He is teaching us that we all should find something that we will do with passion and money will come anyway. That we should not waste our lives doing something we hate just to get paid. Cheers!
Well, I'm 31 years old now, my parents hadn't any money, when they came to Germany. Trust me, I know how it is to be poor. My parents started to work their asses of to give me and my brother a better opportunity. I felt responsible for their suffering, I studied, got good grades, and finally became an officer at the German armed forces, afterwards I studied to become an investment banker and to found my own company. Life always felt a little odd to me...like I was living somebody else's life. I've been to Vegas, Dubai, drove astonishing and really fun cars, made party, all the things...and yeah, it was fun, in very short period of time. a couple of years ago, I got into a depression after a heart attack. I lost quite everything, except my second wife, who is truly the love of my life. She doesn't care about the money, fortunately. We took a break from everything and made a 1 month trip to Norway, with a 30 year old Honda Transalp which I bought for 300 bucks and repaired myself through TH-cam Videos and some help of a friend. We only took some clothes and 500 Euros for food and gas with us, on our journey. Well, it was the best thing that could happen to me. It was the best time in my life and I've never felt so free before. We slept in a tent in the woods, ate some low budget food on a camping stove and came with almost half the money back. You don't really "need" the money. It's an illusion. Well, of course you need it to eat and for a roof over your head, but you don't need it like the capitalism is trying to tell you, how bad you need it. now we're trying our best to buy a very cheap piece of land, where we can spend a quiet and nice life, maybe with a dog or two...and some sheeps from farmers who give them for free. Hopefully giving other people like us a chance to own a piece of land for 1€. Trust me, having less, is often the better option. my friends, who run the company I've founded, are earning about 300k a year, but still working about 80-90 hours a week. I don't want to know, how my life would have been, if I didn't had the heart attack. Must feel horrible to live an unfulfilled life and realise it in your 60's.
I always come back here when I'm feeling stuck. Someday I hope I won't need to come back here again.

I have this quote tattooed as part of a larger project - "What do you desire" and it is everything.
“Better to have a short life that’s full of things you love to do. Than a long life spent in a miserable way.”
That was my wake up call in life
Mine too.
I don't recall mine, but Alan was for sure the man to help me step back and see.
Hopefully you continued on that path because most just get sucked back in by the bs, watch this video once a week until you are doing what you love, I am and I still watch it... It puts a smile on my face and a tear in my eye Everytime.
I missed it - just realized
Sometimes you don’t know what you desire until you find it, so it’s important to try
