  • In this video we burn some passive fire protection products to show you how they protect structural elements or prevent fire spread, and also what to be careful of. This is done as part of the postgraduate course in Structural Fire Engineering at Stellenbosch University.

nice one... am wondering if a thin intumescent spray on steel duct can provide fire resistance in terms of insulation say 60mins using standard fire curve in furnace.

You are unlikely to be able to turn a single plate of steel into a fire wall with insulation resistance using only intumescent. The steel normally fails insulation criteria before the intumescent has even activated. It is for structural resistance, and not compartmentation, that intumescents are applied

Thanks for the nice video Prof, may i know what is the product and substrate used for the epoxy in 10:00? I think it wasn't introduced in the earlier part too.

At around 10 minutes it is a solid layer of epoxy so is not on an substrate. Hope that helps.

@@firesun Hope you are well Prof. If you don't mind, could you kindly share the source of the solid layer of epoxy? Am looking to run some tests on a similar sample but its not widely available. Thank you!

@@raycjg The samples tested in this video were kindly supplied by Carboline and Pyro-Cote (except for the intumescent on timber which failed which came from a third company).
