Installed these on a riding mower th-cam.com/users/postUgkxetgfkJxfdT_B2vGYP-uNTLaBbim9OKTD . They were sharp out of the box, although I've never liked blade edges that were coated...not quite as sharp as I personally want. Using my belt sander, I removed the coating from the cutting edges and refined the edge enough to shave with them. So far, after three runs, these blades are holding up as expected. Even after hitting a few fallen 1/2 inch or so branches, the edges are still sharp as heck. No edge dings, no warping, etc. As far as installing them, the cutouts were of the proper size and shape to fit my aging Craftsman mower. Very satisfied.
Love that you are using the mulch kit. I have had one on my JD tractors for over 20 years. Great cut, clean lawn…and oh boy does it grind leaves to powder!! Nice video!
I've run Oregon blades on my rear discharge King Kutter mower for years. I averaged 3500 acres a year for about 8 years and they've held up unbelievably well. I did a lot of custom mowing with it till I got my Scag Tigercat zero turn. I have Oregon blades on it. Mowing really soothes my soul. 😃
Easy way to take off the blades is using a chunk of 2x4 and wedge it between the blade and the gap between the blades(where the grass travels from blade to blade once cut) on the deck itself. Been running 4 commercial mowers for 16 years and we have always done it this way and can do it one handed once you get used to it.

As usual, great video Tim. I use a 4" x 4" block of wood to break loose the center nut for my mower blades. I wedge between the end of the blade and the deck while using a wrench to loosen the center nut. It works every time and keeps me on the same side of the mower deck Using a wrench on the center top side spindle may loosen the spindle. I also don't use high pressure water on my deck. It tends to invade the greased bearings with water. Letting water sit inside the bearings causes rust. I use a large flat knife to work the built up grass loose then compressed 120 PSI air. AND I always wear good leather gloves. I enjoy your videos and thank you for taking the time to make them. Happy mowing :)

I am all about the mulching approach. I use the mulching kit all season on my X590 with a 54” deck. Good video Tim. I follow with aeration and a roller as well a couple times a year.
YES - nice video! I just installed a mulching kit on my JD X580 tractor and cut my grass. Now that the leaves are falling, I will be using my tractor often to cut up the leaves !!! 🙂

I use a small 2 X 4 block at the end of each blade and against any convenient housing abutment to hold the blade while loosening or tightening each blade. Makes it easier to work from the one side only.

Always good to have a spare set of blades, but you can sharpen them (or have them sharpened), even the one you hit the concrete with.
Like your videos I purchased the mulching kit from green farm parts excellent company when I tipped up deck some grease cane out the breather

I definitely would not use a 0 degree tip on a deck, Knocking the paint off makes your deck prone to rust and or corrosion. Use a less aggressive tip and let the water soak in and use a ph balanced detergent. What I like to do is when I buy a new mower is wash and dry the deck and apply a ceramic coating on the deck once a year. You will get a better cut because the grass doesn't stick to the deck as much and it's easier to clean off. I wash my decks once a week and blow off at every job.
Tim, if you're still using a conventional ratchet for such things, I suggest a battery operated impact. Nothing fancy, I've got a 1/2" 300ftlb "rated" unit that I use quite often around the farm. Comes in handy for everything from the 11 ton machine to the 1/4 ton mower ;). Very handy for blade swaps, even on a push mower. No more figuring out a way to hold the blade for torque off / on.
After I clean, the mower deck out i spray with wd 40 next clean out the grass doesn't stick as bad helps to keep rust down
Tim, you could always buy a lawn sweeper for your machine. Only have to drive around after mowing to collect grass and/or leaves. Just can't go very fast.

When you clean your mower deck for the last time in the fall you could prime and paint the worn areas on the deck. Might help to prevent or delay rust pitting.
+Philip Way one challenge I've had over the last couple of years is that I've used the deck long after the weather turns cold...to mulch leaves. So, by then, I have all of my washing equipment put away.
It has been hard for me to wash it when finished for the season. Maybe I can do better now with the heated shed.

the oregon blades are shaped for bagging/discharge and not mulching. the bi twist blades like the john deere are made to make the grass move throughout the deck to "mulch" it

Torque to 90ft lbs. Just did the 10 hr maintenance on our 60D mid mount yesterday.
Question, how do you know when the mower spindles are full of grease and that both the lower and upper bearings get new grease? it seems that two or three pumps may not be enough to fill the spindle and replenish grease in both bearings and I have not been able to see grease oozing out like in other grease points such as the front end etc. Thanks for the advise!
Some of the blades are painted with a rust proof baked on enamel and some are coated with enamel that has teflon in it to keep grass etc.. from sticking.
Is that a mulching kit you have? The one's I've seen on Ebay don't look like that. Do you have a part number?

I know this is an old video but I just stumbled on it and I want to pass on a little piece of advice when it comes to the 1025R mower blade replacement. This year I switch to Gator blades and hit a small rock with them and instead of the blade flexing it shattered and I mean shattered my bearing housing and bent the deck so bad I had to do a little body work to my deck to put the new bearing housing in because the blades were touching. With the OEM blades I have hit bigger stuff in the yard and harder stuff like the water meter that killed his tractor dead in his tracks and the only thing it done was bent the blade. Now I did notice that the gator blades are about three times as thick as the OEM. I believe this is the reason why I tore my mower deck up. This is the reason why I put my old blades back on and I have since then even hit the water meter yet again (this thing keeps coming up out of the ground) with no damage accept bending the blade. Those blades are a lot cheaper than a mower deck and/or bearing housing and shaft. This is the reason why I will stay with OEM blades. The gator blade did kind of chop up grass clippings a little better but not enough for the type of damage they can cause by simply missing a piece of large gravel in your yard. The gravel would cause enough Problem by going through a window without it also tearing up a $2,000 mower deck.
Gator makes blades that aren't as thick as the ones you had. If I remember right there are 3 different models. I think they are labeled as G1 G2 G3. G3 is the thickest and heavy duty blades. If you try gators again get the G1 which will be closer to stock thickness.
I use a pneumatic impact wrench. No need to hold the blades from turning it's so fast they don't have a chance to move.

My back started hurting just watching you flip that 7 gauge steel deck over LOL. I still have the OEM original blades on my 60D deck and ive never been real happy with cut quality. I think the high lift blades actually suck the grass upward so the blade cuts them off cleanly. Tire tracks for example lay the grass down but the high lift blades will suction the grass back up so the blade can cut them off. OEM blades miss those spots and the next day the grass will be standing up again. However I do most my mowing with a X700 series equipped with Gator Blades so I rarely use the 1025R deck anyhow. They do a really good job at reducing clippings even without a mulching kit. When it comes to mowing, the X700s are the superior machine in my opinion.
I’ve never been happy with my 748/ 7Iron cut quality.beat things I’ve found is keep air pressure even in tires, adjust garage wheels properly and go slow. I always lift my discharge chute too. It’s terrible for windrowing clippings.
I have an original 7Iron. Before they started offering them on the tractors. Not sure if that matters or not.

When I take something apart, I use Never Seize on the threads of the bolts before I put it back together. How about you?

I cut my hand once pretty bad replacing blades when the wrench slipped. I now wear leather gloves when removing and replacing blades.

My husband and I have a 1023E with a 60D and we are trying to find the mulching kit. It looks like u may have the 60D.
Great video Tim. I went with the Oregon gator blades. The coating on their blades will wear off. When I was cleaning and sharpening them the first time I scraped off what was left of the coating. I love the gator blades and wouldn't use anything else. I used them on my last tractor too. From what I understand the Oregon blades are made with better metal then most other blades. I got 2 years out of the OEM blades. I'll see what I get out of these. I also mow limbs and rocks. :-) ~~ Levi

No I don't. Sometimes I wish I did. I watched a video on the new 2016 X700 series and they now have a deck where you can flip a lever and go between mulch or discharge.

Every nut and bolt on my deere is metric. Had to buy a bunch of tools just to wrench on it. Wish Deere would use standard inch nuts and bolts.
Where do you find that plastic mulch kit? All I can find are the metal ones. (2021 1025R with 60D Auto Connect)

Do you have any pointers on leveling the deck. I have the hardest time doing so. I bought the leveling gauge from the jd dealer but my cut is still uneven.
Maybe could you post a video of how to level properly?

You could sure use an impact driver or impact wrench. It would help a lot with taking the blades off. Air ones aren't to expensive.

Did you ever use the Oregon blades? If so how did they work out? My 54" deck with the mulching kit seems to leave lots of uncut grass (I mow pretty high) and wondered if they would create more lift to help that issue.
+Patrick Downs I have not yet tried the Oregon standard blades. I am currently using gator blades. I do not like them with the mulch kit. I will go back to Deere OEM mulch kit blades as soon as I can. I messed up my OEM blades a few weeks after filming this by running over a nylon lifting strap with steel rings on the ends. It killed the tractor and tore up the blades pretty bad. At some point, I will sharpen those blades again and put them back on.
Great videos Tim. I recently got a 1023e/54D and went to sharpen the blades. Watched your video and looked very easy. I got the outer blades off fine. The center blade though when I put a wrench on the other side nut above the belt wheel would just spin off that side when turning the mower blade bolt. Any advice? It seems like I'd have to tighten that nut on the belt wheel incredibly tight to even have a chance to break the blade bolt free.
Use a 2x4 to keep the blade from turning.

I believe the blades need to be installed position at a 45 angle left middle straight up and right 45 angle.
No need. Belts will slip anyway.

No..they are belt driven, so they will not remain as you place them anyway.
Make sure you put some grease on them blade bolts they will come out much easier to change the blades

The deck is probably 150 lbs. Not sure. I can drag it around, and I can tip it up, but I can't lift the whole thing.

I've done some mowing with my mower deck. Ive got the 54" wide deck. Ive cleaned out from under the deck a few times & today was the 1st time i took off the blades to sharpen them. Hope it works okay.

The black shield is the ‘mulch kit’. It is available from John Deere.
you used the silver bracket to lift and tip the deck. Did you roll it in the wheels?
Hi Tim - I have a 1023 with the 60” deck. I just bought the deck and lift kit but can’t for the life in me find usable instructions for installing the lifting hardware. Do you happen to know where to find that or have a video on that? I also have the additional hydro ram for lifting the deck.

They are belt driven. They will slip around wherever they want.

Love my 1025R but, I sure have challenges on occasions.
1. Connecting hydraulic hoses for the loader and backhoe. The rings will not snap back back over the nipples... I've released the pressure in the lines thinking that was the problem with no success.
Any suggestions out there??
+Mark Hutson release the pressure on the tractor side as well by running the lever all the way around while tractor is off. If no pressure on either side, there shouldn't be much problem.
Having said that, Christy's hands are just not strong enough to make these connections easily.
Thank you. Certainly did help but, I still have a couple of the coupling that will NOT click over the nipples once the inserted... I tried two days and then just it sit for another day and it suddenly just snapped on??? Grrr...
sometimes if they are unused for awhile the loader or backhow side will build pressure. if the male side of the connection tip won't push in easily, put a rag over it and tap with a hammer to release the pressure
This has happened to me and I solved the issue by cycling the hydraulic selector valve while I'm pushing the hydraulic coupling on. As I'm pushing the pressure in the line is allowed to equalize with the tractor. Cycling the selector allows the line and coupling to bleed back to the tractor return side of the hydraulic reservoir. Give it a shot!

Hey bud, I got my 1025r yesterday! I had the dealer install the mulch kit. I thought the blades had a torque rating. Do they not?! That would be good to know in the future as I'd do it myself.

Two questions for you Tim, 1. What type of grease are you using to lube the zirc fittings on the mower. And 2, The John Deere users manual that came with my 60 D mowing Jack shows that there are two (2) washers a large one and a smaller one that fits right under the head of the bolt that secures the blades.I noticed that when you changed your blades you only had the one large washer to go under the bolt head. When I removed the original blades from my mowing deck I also just had the one large washer under the bolt head like you show in your video. I Purchased smaller washers as shown in the operators manual today but I am wondering if I should not put them on and just use the large flat ones? Thank you for your time.

Should all the blades be oriented in the same position when I reinstall deck? Like All at 3 and 9 o'clock so the ends pass each other at the same time. And will not doing this affect how the grass is cut like leaving strips of uncut grass? I can't find any info about this.
The blades are belt driven, so they won’t stay where you put them anyway.

We're considering buying a 2012 JD 1026R Tractor with 60D mowing deck and front end loader attachment. I will use it as my main mower. How pleased are you with this tractor as a mower?
Functional as a mower. Not as efficient or quite as good a cut as a zero turn.

FYI.. you really should torque your blade bolts to 90 foot pounds.
I have a John Deere zero turn that cuts like crap. I have to over lap 18 inches to eliminate a line in the cut. Nothing seems to help it cut better.
Have you noticed a difference in finish cut between the 54 and the 60?

Tim, I dislike pulling the mower engagement switch every time I back up. Is there a way to bypass that safety connection. My Husqvarna has a separate Key position on it.
You can disable the RIO using many different techniques. Look on greentractortalk.com for more info

um, many dont have compressors to run air tools let alone air tools.
Hi Tim, thanks for your great videos. I like how you get your whole family involved. I got my 1025R this past summer and have also got the front JD snowblower. You mentioned in one of your videos that you have added liquid to weight the tires. Can you tell me what you used. Some people are adding beet sugar up here in Canada. I understand the extra weight is great for snow and bucket work, but has it created a problem when mowing the lawn? I've got septic tank and bed that I cut the lawn over. Appreciate your advice!
+Paul Duyn thanks for the kind words. Yes, I use rimguard beer juice. I also have the wheel weights, so I have exaggerated this even further. I notice a difference in early spring if I mow when wet. Also, I tilled part of my yard last summer and reseeded. I notice in that area...so I just make sure to drive in different place each time I mow until it gets packed down again. Once packed, I don't notice, nor do I notice in the summer. The weight makes the tractor ride a bit better...less jerky bouncing.
If using the tractor only for mowing, skip the weight. If anything else, the weight is hugely valuable. Gives the tractor more grip in all situations.

I recently purchased a used, low hour, JD 2305 Tractor/FEL/Mid Mount Mower, but previous owner didn't have the owner's manuals. Everything was stored inside and seems well taken care of, but I'm having some trouble. Idk the correct front to back height setting for the mowing deck, or for the anti scalp wheels. Do you have vids, or any advice that could help?
Front can be slightly lower than the back.
Anti scalp wheels should be 1/4” to 1/2” off the ground when on a hard surface (concrete) at mowing height.
You don’t want the mower riding on those wheels. But you do want them close to the ground to deter scalping.
My deck does not have all that plastic underneath. Is that a mulching kit?

I just purchased my first tractor, 1025r tlb with a 54d deck. I have about 3 acres I mow of my own. I plan on doing various odd jobs and I get better to help pay for the tractor. Do you think I should change blades and service it before I put the deck away for the winter or wait till spring? By the way I am completely new to the tractor business and your videos are very helpful.
Congratulations! At a minimum, you should wash out the underside of the deck to minimize rusting.
The new decks I looked at have a connection to hook up a hose to clear out the debris. You hook up the hose then run the blades a few minutes.

Well that's a bummer, what is the port like under the deck? Would hooking up your pressure washer help any?
I have already made up my mind that whenever its wet out I'm just going to remove the deck, flip it over and wash it.
Prime and paint those bare spots. Rust has killed many a deck. At least here In Connecticut.

Informative, but I'd probably lay down a tarp so cleaning up the cut grass and possibly grease or oil wouldn't be on the deck or lawn.

I just bought a mulch kit for my 60D deck and it is all metal and yours is plastic. have you ever heard anything about the quality of the mulching compared to your plastic kit? why would they make the kits different for the two decks other than for size?

I saw that in the 1026R parts breakdown. I'm assuming you have a 1026R? They must have changed it.

+Tractor Time with Tim those Oregon blades were they high lift or just standard I know the mulch blades have less lift then std ones? I was thinking to myself the other day I wonder if they make high lift blades for these mowers?
They claimed to be high lift. I was a bit disappointed when I got them. The 'picture' showed 'gator' type blades. Still, I'm thinking the mulch blades are the best for me. As I said, they do not provide as much lift, but I really like how they handle leaves.

Ok, that is the one that I listed on my website under "60D standard blades". Folks using the mulch kit should use the other style of blade.
