    This was a 215 conversion, I believe. All these have a turbo prop which means they would be 415 or converted 215s. 215s were originally radial engine aircraft. Most have now been converted to turboprops with much greater power. A 415 was the modernized purpose built turboprop on the same basic airframe as the 215.

    The 415 eats Air Tractors for lunch has room left over for ice cream! The turnaround for a 415 (or 215) is unparalled. P.S. A LOVELY VIDEO COMPILATION...THANK YOU FOR YOUR EFFORTS!!!!!! B.T.W.. THIS IS A 215...A 215T, "T" which is a 215 retrofitted with turboprops. Until recently, the world's largest collection of 215's was in Kingman, AZ where 215's were upgraded with turboprops. Javier did a FANTASTIC job on this video and the closeups are SPECTACULAR! I did not realize, heretofore, that the beacon under the port wing came on only when probe was down. COOL BABY!!!

    Sorry but this is the Canadair CL-415, the 215 had radial engines and did not have the extra vertical fins on the Horizontal Stabilizer.

      Sorry that is incorrect. That is a series four aircraft modified to a CL215T. The serial number of the aircraft is painted on the side. All CL415 serial numbers begin with a 2XXX.

      the CL215T is a CL215 trasformed to a plane that is almost equal to a 415, the only thing that change between 215T and 415 are the water doors, 215T still has 2 water door, while 415 naturally has 4 water doors ;)

    Pause the video at 6:38 and you will see the water door. The CL-215 has two doors, one per side and the CL-415 has four doors, two per side. The plane pictured is a CL-215t, with two P&W 123af engines producing roughly 2380 shp per engine.

    Sorry Sir, but this a CL215T as the author said. It’s an upgraded version of the CL215 with turboprop engines (but without EFIS cockpit) that developed Canadair for the Spanish Air Force remotorizing 215 airplanes. All these planes are operated in Spain, except one, in Canada. This enhanced version gave rise to the new model, the Bombardier 415, which incorporates the CL215T improvements and a full electronic cockpit.

    • @flyingbeaver57
      @flyingbeaver57 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I don't know. I remember flying into places near where uncontrolled forest fires were raging, and seeing lots of runway-based water and retardant tankers converted from old prop warbirds, etc. and not a single CL-215 (The CL-415 wasn't in service yet) in sight. I kept being told two things about these aircraft: 1) Canadians don't know much about building good aircraft, and 2) the government won't buy them because they "weren't invented here." Not a very good reason.
      So, I'd just put some gas in my DHC-2 Beaver (another purpose-built Canadian design) after unloading fishermen returning from vacations, and fly north again. I heard statement #1 many times (except from guys flying Beavers or Otters). It seemed to be a pretty common opinion.
      I forget now how many dozen countries have CL-215's and -415's in operation - it's quite a few. Just this year, production of CL-415's has been re-started, because the oldest CL-215's are getting pretty tired and the demand keeps growing. It's a good design that does the job it's designed for really well. That's as much reason as there needs to be.
      I don't know why some people would have such a hate on about purpose-built fire-fighting aircraft. The service record and the performance of the CL-215/415 speaks for itself. "Not Invented Here" is not unique to some in the United States; on the other hand a lot of forest fire fighters are glad to have them. Like the Beaver, Otter and Twin Otter, the Canadairs were designed and built to do a particular job. They do it well, and are efficient and cost effective. That's the reason new 415's will be rolling off the line very soon - fires put people in danger.

    Can someone explain how this is done. How does the traps work or what it´s called. The lower the plane and scoop up the water but I don´t really see how the water is collected. Great construction though!
    My mind thinks of hydralics but I don´t know if I´m thinking in the right direction.

    • @romanelliric
      @romanelliric 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Just dynamics! Water is collected thanks to 2 scoops lowering under the fuselage. The speed of the aircraft "pushes" the water inside the two tanks. That's all, no pumps are required to do the job. (sorry for my bad english).

    • @deltavee2
      @deltavee2 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Scoops on the hull near the back of the aircraft. Tremendous water pressure due to the speed of the airplane fills the tanks. That's about 30,000 pounds of water picked up in around nine or ten seconds.
      Edit: I saw a vid a little later that says it takes 12 seconds.
      Us Canadians kin engineers pretty good sometimes ;-{)

    CL-215, CL-215T and CL-415
    In 2016, Viking acquired the Type Certificates (manufacturing rights) for the Canadair CL-215, CL-215T, and CL-415 aircraft. Visit our Customer Support Pagefor more support and spares details.
    Canadair CL-215
    The CL-215 was designed as a specialist firebomber, particularly suited to heavily forested regions. The resulting amphibious aircraft is powered by two Pratt & Whitney Twin Wasp R-2800 radial engines and is capable of scooping up 5455 litres (1200 Imp gal/1440 US gal) of water in 12 seconds from a water source. The CL-215 Series 1 aircraft first flew on October 23, 1967 and the first delivery was to the French Civil Protection agency in June 1969.
    Production of piston powered CL-215’s continued through 1990 ending with the Series 5 aircraft standard.
    Read more about the CL-215
    Canadair CL-215T
    Originally the subsequent CL-215T was to be a simple turboprop powered development of the piston powered CL- 215. Canadair converted two aircraft in 1989 to act as development and technical demonstrator aircraft. The first of these flew on June 8 that year. Retrofit kits for piston CL-215 aircraft to the new “T” standard were offered, but Canadair elected not to continue with “T” Kits as the internal business case favored new production over conversion and instead developed the CL-415.
    Read more about the CL-215T
    Canadair CL-415
    The CL-415 was developed from the piston powered CL-215 Series 5 aircraft in combination with the advances from the “T” conversion program.
    Additional improvements over the CL-215, which first appeared on the CL-215T, include winglets and finlets, higher operating weights, an increased capacity firebombing system, (1621 US gal from 1440 US gal) and the addition of a foam injection system.
    Read more about the aircraft specifications
    Canadair CL-215T vs CL-415
    A 215T will carry the same load and perform similar to a CL-415
    The major external difference is the CL-215T has a 2 door bomb bay while the CL-415 has a 4 door bomb bay (which is better, is debated continually by the world wide operator base). The primary internal difference between the CL-415 over the CL-215T is an EFIS avionics suite in the CL-415

    At 35 million dollars a piece and a 1500 gallon water capacity they are not very cost effective for fighting fires, in contrast the Air Tractor Fire Boss cost 3 million dollars a piece and haul 800 gallons of water, one Canadair can not out work 4 or 5 Air Tractors.

    • @mapearce1
      @mapearce1 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +John doe I am a Canadian AAO....yup, love the tractors....we fly them 6 at a run....but then again...we fly CL-215T at 4 a group....yes...more expensive...but I kick bigger butt with a group of 4 Ducks than with 6 FB. But hey, give me the FB x 6, the CL-215T x4 and an long term retardant Electra....now I am really kicking but....but lord....that's a lot of aircraft to control...what...RW's on scene as well! Cripes....I am getting TOO old for all this radio traffic! But seriously...I have never worked a single Canadair....minimum two with a Convair or an Electra.....or, a group of 4. The Fire Boss or the Air Tractors are great little machines....excellent for filling in the gaps on the line.....each type and size of bomber has its place....as an AAO I do not care about cost....only the strategy and tactics I must use with each type of bomber.

    • @TheBasketshooter
      @TheBasketshooter 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm currently doing a Fluids Mechanics problem for class that declares that the Canadair CL-215T can hold 6,120 gallons and takes 12 seconds to fill to capacity. Although that still makes the Air tractor a more cost efficient plane if the plane prices you indicated are still accurate.

    • @WhitewalkerII
      @WhitewalkerII 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I suggest you pay for the maintenance of 5 planes instead of six and the cost of 5 pilots, plus training etc, instead of one.

    • @Ron_the_Skeptic
      @Ron_the_Skeptic 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jake: The 415 is a water bomber that can scoop up to 6137 litres of water from a nearby water source, ... Gallons and litres are not the same size, and a 415 is a more powerful version of a 215. The 215 can scoop up a load of over 5000 litres of water in 10 seconds. In US gallons, about 1300 - 1400 depending on which specs you believe.
      To Blue Sky's point, 2 Air Tractors could pick up a little more water, but then you have two planes to staff, refuel, maintain, and keep track of while dropping in smoke and drawing water. One 802F Fire Boss can deliver up to 14,000 gallons per hour (according to manufacturer's web page)(17.5 drops of 800 US gal, or one drop every 3.4 minutes!); one 215 can typically make 6 to 10 drops per hour, dropping 36 800 to 61 400 litres, or up to 16 220 US gallons. It really depends on how far it is from fire to lake but 3.4 minutes seems wildly optimistic! The further from water, the less advantage the smaller plane has. Also the 215 can scoop water from the ocean (or Great Lakes) with waves up to 1.2 m high (about 4 feet), I wouldn't want to try that with the Air Tractor
