The fact that two athletes with two vastly different approaches to planning and race strategy can finish a 240 mile race within minutes of each other is somewhat freeing to me.
Started watching this video right after I finished MOAB240 Premiere two days ago, then paused it and continued it yesterday, had to pause it again, and finally finished it today. Funnily, as I finished it, i realized that it had be close to 71 hours between me starting this video and finishing it. And this is how long you guys were on course, meanwhile, I had been to work twice, had two full nights of sleep, and ate 5 meals. This put the amount of time, energy, and effort that goes in races like this in perspective even more. Kudos to both of you. While I watched the MOAB240 film, I almost felt bad for @JeffPelletier not winning, but now when I have heard Jesse's story, I felt good that he won it. Drove to the race all by himself, who made all of his drop bags by himself, pacer for just 12.5% of the trail, no crew, and fighting against all the pains to win the race, watch & phone gave up on him. Kudos to the lady at the Aid station who made sure that Jesse wouldn't quit, otherwise, we wouldn't have got a chance to hear this great story. And one thing that many people almost take for granted is, Jeff is filming while running all these races which is an added task+added weight by itself. Keep up the great work :)
Making this comment when you said Jesse’s age. That is so wonderful to hear. Seeing someone at 50 in supreme physical condition takes a weight off of my shoulders. I was worried that as I age I may not be able to reach my goals. Seeing what Jesse has done confirms that I have nothing to worry about.
I am literally thinking the same thing at age 40, but I am feeling fit and strong and Jesse has definitely proven that you can be strong runner into your fifties for sure.
The difference in approach and mentality between you two is so amusing to me! Jesse scrambles his dropbags with 30 minutes to spare, where Jeff has multi-page spreadsheets. Jesse has no crew, Jeff has the freakin' Rossmonster. Jesse doesn't know how to use a watch and accidentally switches it into KM, Jeff has the best watch on the planet. Jesse literally cannot even remember what the brand of his shoes was..! and Jeff probably picked his pair based on stack height, outsole rubber compound, and details of lug pattern... AND YET they each crushed this race in their own particular style. Cool.
Jeff you sell yourself short. I have seen you improve in your videos and in your running. You are in great shape and if you put your mind to it you could win these races too. Jesse is right, you are moving up.
Comparison is the thief of joy. You could be in the best condition of your life and still there are people better than you that make you feel insufficient.
Kudos to Jesse and Jeff! Both men are making huge contributions to the sport, with very different approaches. (Jeff packs his drop bags months in advance, while Jesse packs his as the drop bag delivery van is pulling away!) They share a fierce love for ultra running.
I usually don’t listen to podcasts when I run but I put this on and listened for 2 hours while running today. My longest run of the year so far. Kept thinking if they can run 72hrs I can do 2😀
I thought 158 minutes, what can they possibly talk about. Jesse, amazing effort, for real, what an amazing run! Jeff, same. Thanks for this video, helps a lot!
Completed my 10th marathon last Sunday, listen to you giants talking, I look forward to increase the distances ( btw only creazy runners enjoy more than 2 hours like this)! Respect
This was a fascinating conversation, but what I loved most of all was having a front row seat to this very cool friendship that has developed between the two of you. That's great. Makes me think of what Dylan Bowman says: "Trail running will save the world." Looking forward to both your separate and any joint future adventures.
You guys are incredibly inspirational. I'm 32 and have have never been into fitness until about a few months ago. I'm doing the TMB hike this August, so for training I've started running with 13k so far being my longest distance. I found your videos after having your UTMB come up on my feed and I have not had a channel grip me like this in many years. I have watched both the moab video and this one back to back as I'm completely enthralled by ultra running. I have heard of people running these sort of distances, but never really looked into it. As someone who struggled to do 13k without stopping I can't even wrap my head around doing what you do, on basically no sleep, with the incredible terrain and elevation. Boy did this inspire me however. Probably more than I have been in many many years. I don't see myself being able to do anything like this, but I really can't wait to start increasing my distances with my next goal being 20k.Being new to running and figuring out training plans can be hard, but watching something like this just wants me to go out and give it my absolute best, because I know that however tired I feel, it will never be anything close to what you guys do. Thank you so much for the insight into your world, can't wait to binge watch your other videos past and future.
As a tip; don’t be afraid to walk, keep your pace low and don’t force it! Ultras are quite different to Marathons in that regard. It is about beating yourself and always moving forward, not about shaving a Minute off of your pb. You can do this!
Enjoyed watching and hearing your and Jesse’s takeouts, stories, etc from Moab 240 Jeff. Thanks for filming so much of it, it’s more difficult than most people realize or appreciate 💪🏻👊🏻
Great convo, as someone who isn’t in this world at all I love hearing the mindset behind top level athletes it’s so interesting. Like he was racing to the aid station to drop 😂
Loved the movie and this interview is wonderful. It’s like watching two old friends, catching up. I learned a lot from this interview and smiled a lot. Thanks Jeff and Jesse. Amazing race and hope to see more of both of you.
This honest and unrehearsed conversation was invaluable. You both represent the best qualities of our sport. For me (age 60, running since 1979, longest race the Cowboy 200, once a 4:16 miler), the duel between weathered wisdom Loner v. younger well-geared crewed/paced Sponsored Athlete was truly priceless. McMurtry might have written this as an epic novel had he lived, a Lonesome Dove 240. PS Jeff: Racing at 60 is glorious. Paraphrasing Sir Winston Churchill, It isn’t the beginning of the end, or even the end of the end, but it may be the end of the beginning.
Great interview! I remember that weekend, following the race live by clicking refresh on the tracker as you moved up from 10th to 2nd. The film is awesome but this discussion is even better, it's so much fun to hear what you both experienced during the run. Thanks for sharing this!
Oh this was just a great conversation. What made this conversation so great is that you both were so honest and willing to share your inner thoughts; and it’s just so great how different perceptions you had! Great finish Jeff and Jesse!
This interview is great, congrats on the results (to both of you!) and thank you Jeff for the beautiful film. I love watching your trail running videos - truly inspiring!
Great episode and race film! I've been waiting for the two for months. I've followed Jeff via his videos here and have done of ton of Keira races and have been fortunate to have done volunteer work with Jesse and he's packed me up after a couple of DNFs. Jesse is a SoCal legend!
Favourite part 2:24:05 “porcupine rim… I had a smile on my face!” Thanks you for all the amazing captures and finer details to this experience. Loved the recap of the battle in the making.
weird thoughts/completely crazy rationalizations are characteristic part of hallucinations/psychosis state, that part about you mind state was fascinating but I must say this whole run series are so nice to watch with this spectacularly close finish, ty!
This is such an amazing interview and concept! Listening to both perspectives, all the different battles you were fighting and both of your perceptions of the race!
Fantastic long form race recap . Met you in the Lakes at the end of your Fell Race and always look forward to your films. Jesse is so very engaging and also comes across as really humble too …. Loved this conversation.
Great video and conversation. Awesome to see two so totally different approaches. Loved the parts toward the end where you guys talked a bit about the gamesmanship (e.g. hiding headlamp). Keep ‘em coming!
Fascinating race post mortem from 2 absolute champions. I really enjoyed listening to your insights. The race video of MOAB240 was worth the wait! Appreciate everything you do Jeff and congratulations on an elite performance out there. Looking forward to following your adventures throughout this year. Run hard and best wishes mate. Cheers - Regan
Took a few days to listen to this but super fascinating play by play and provides a great perspective of what a 240 mile race entails mentally. Thanks for putting it together
For people who don't run, it looks very easy- it's because of your mindset in this race- no tears and complaining. But runners who have even a little experience in ultra running know that it is a big and difficult thing. Thanks for this inspiration. Great job Jeff!
This discussion has some great information about the race, as well as crewing and pacing a runner. I may be pacing a friend at this years race. So glad you did this!
I enjoyed the Doc and this so much! So interesting to hear from a guy like Jesse - his approach rarely finds its way into TH-cam (though it would be funny - 2009-style vlog filmed on a rock or something :D) this said: I appreciated both SO MUCH. THANKS for the effort you put into your training, run and documentation, so good to be able to be part of it somehow :)
As someone who runs Ultra from the middle or even back of the pack with the simple goal to push myself, it is fascinating to hear this in depth discussion from two guys running it competitively and listen to the strategy playing out. Amazing content as always Jeff.
Congrats on a race well ran and the chance to run hard for the win. You really captured the event well. I was at oasis as a volunteer and rd 46 crewing a buddy that was around 8-10th then. It was cool to see you both roll thru with completely different mindsets and tactics. Jesse was in a rough spot and really out of it mentally without much support. Funny to hear his recollection of his time there. I was the guy whose girlfriend was a PT (wife is a massage therapist) and I helped massage his calf and KT tape him and tell him what he needed to hear to not be as worried about the pain he was getting. I spent some time talking with Audrey as well and you seemed to be in a good space and had a good head on your shoulders still when you came through quickly. Thanks for putting together this long format video and talk. I’ve been working behind the scenes at ouray100 for a few years now and learned a lot there but I learned so much from both of your accounts of the event and plan on taking that knowledge to the starting line of Moab this Oct. to see what I’m capable of. Thanks again!
I saw the length of this interview and I was going to not listen, but so glad I did. The behind the scenes is almost better than watching the race itself! Amazing work by both of you, super cool to see everything involved in running these types of races!
I really could not stop grinning in the end when the both of you were so excited to finally discuss that incredible finish. And I also loved how you both spoke so highly and appreciative of each other - real sportsmanship! Chapeau to the both of you! Enjoyed every second of this talk and I can only imagine how much fun this race must have been, I mean this is what its all about! Thanks for sharing this long piece, Jeff and on to the next adventure! 🏃🏼♂️
And yes I‘m late to watch this, but its difficult to find time firstly for that one hour doc‘ and then that almost three hour debrief! 😆 Worth any minute though. 🙂
Took a few days to listen to the entire conversation. This was so interesting to hear. We have seen your point of view on the race through the film, but now we're hearing all the nice little details als all the decisions and thinking that goes on during a race. It was very insightful on how you actually DO these crazy events! Thank you so much for the amazing film and this interview, absolutely amazing!
so many fantastic insights here! Jesse had so many hiccups and potential pitfalls and your training and planning was dialed in - but in the end both of your finishes came down to two people with such admirable persistence and will. the film was amazing - very well executed - but the true story of the race was told here.
@@JeffPelletier I kind of treated it like a podcast while I was doing chores and it was perfect for that! I had also seen Audrée's insta story earlier last week saying it was a three hour conversation so I knew what I was in for
Just so inspiring to hear both your experiences for MOAB but also getting into your brains. Just so fascinating. I hope you do more podcasts like this in the future.
I watched the Moab 240 movie and followed up with this Podcast. Jesse has hit the nail on the head. You couldn't script a better finish to the run/race. This was a great listen, you can really feel the tension of the race building through the exchange of experiences. I've only been running 18 months and my best distance is 100km and I was thinking I'm done at that but now feeling inspired to push further. 🏃🏞️💪
When you listen to his last minute preparation and limited training… and the fact that he did not use many pacers or crew staff… it makes you realize he must be one hell of an athlete to win this race at age 50!!
I really enjoyed that you too the time to go everything, it was fascinating to listen too. I think my main takeaway is don't race for the aid stations.
As someone who plans to one day to ultras and longer distances than the marathon as I’m working towards my second this year (I’m 17) this is so interesting and towards the end hearing about the recovery issues just had me giggling and that facts of long distance running / what it does does to the body and why we do it to ourselves almost felt like an ad to stop running, anyways great video !!!!
This is fascinating. Such insight into how these runs can go. It's extraordinary that two runners who take such a different approach can be so close at the finish. Jesse is so chaotic and Jeff, you are so ordered. I love the mutual respect between you both. I'm interested in how fast your last 20 miles was?
Great racing and great story, gentlemen. Inspirational. Jeff you may have a perforated septum in your nose. Go to an ENT doctor and have them check it out.
Wait can you explain a little further the issue of the crew leaving the aid station early so Jesse didn’t have a ride? What does having a ride mean in this context? Thanks!
Watch the film from the Moab 240 here: th-cam.com/video/PjXmYmr1xSA/w-d-xo.html
Such a cool community . These guys are superhuman yet so humble and supportive of each other

I loved the thorough nature of this! It took me a while to work through it, but a 240 mile race debrief can't be condensed into a one hour show.
Crazy to hear Jesse's race experience compared to yours Jeff. He had less of a plan and prep and crew than you and still crushed. Just AMAZING!

This is fascinating. Such insight into how these runs can go. It's extraordinary that two runners who take such a different approach can be so close at the finish. Jesse is so chaotic and Jeff, you are so ordered. I love the mutual respect between you both. I'm interested in how fast your last 20 miles was?
Amazing
This guy is a legend. Messed around and won a 240 mile race just trying to drop out.
very nice podcast! i learned a lot.
It’s great to know that even you guys make mistakes, get lost, drop food etc
Epic.
How do you end up putting notes to your drop bags in your prepares them in three last 30 mins before the checkin? :)
"How many drones have you got Derek" 🤣🤣 so funny
Great racing and great story, gentlemen. Inspirational. Jeff you may have a perforated septum in your nose. Go to an ENT doctor and have them check it out.
Thanks, you could be right! 😟
Worden er ook groepsessies georganiseerd voor core en dergelijke in de buurt waar je zit?
Wait can you explain a little further the issue of the crew leaving the aid station early so Jesse didn’t have a ride? What does having a ride mean in this context? Thanks!
Jesse was overthinking it in the moment, it didn’t really make sense 😂
@@JeffPelletier Ahh thanks for clarifying! What a cool debrief of the race!!
i thought it meant they didnt want him to drop
The crew left early so he wouldn’t try to get a ride, but he could have got a ride from anyone else so the whole thing was moot.
Listening to you guys talk it sounds like women sharing a natural birth story.
😂
is this talk also available in podcast format somwhere?
Unfortunately, I don’t really have a platform for that setup.
Jeff, if you didn't have to spend physical (and mental) energy filming you would have won, IMO. Well done anyway! 💪💪💪
