  • An open source project to let you remotely operate your radio over a network. It's in development and nearly there. Just a few issues when using a tablet or phone. It works fine on a laptop.

    Did you try running this on a Pi Zero?

    • @loughkb
      @loughkb  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did, and it almost worked. While in RX mode and streaming audio, the zero showed around 34% cpu utilization. About the same in TX mode. But! When switching back from TX to RX, there was a 4-7 second 100% cpu spike before the audio stream started. And from that point on, the audio was the same 4-7 seconds behind the radio on RX.

    Kevin, I submitted two sets of patches to fix the baud rate settings and configuration label, and a bunch of grammar, spelling and so forth in the configuration dialog. Also found some bugs with the memory settings which I need to file (or fix). Also to get around the small button problem on the tablet, you can pinch the screen to zoom in. Thanks and 73 de W3DJS

      That's great! I was kind of hoping that a side-effect of me doing a video on it, was a few more programmers out there jumping in and fixing it up. :-)

    The MFJ product I believe was developed by Howard Nurse, W6HN, who has had the Commcat program for some years. I’ve been using Commcat, but Howard is discontinuing it mid-2021 to retire.

    So I have a model B+ sitting around and an ic-7200 in the shack. It would be cool to eventually use my iPhone when away from my house to get on the air. Like you said it’s not there yet, but It’s something to play around with.

    This looks really good, and I though I'll try it out, so I used the latest and greatest Pi image writer which allows you to set up the wifi and pi name and password. So far so good. I did all the other steps, cut and paste from the wiki and could not access the Pi (Zero W) via the https on my network. The SSH works fine. So I was noticing that there was an alternate set of instructions for the Zero, Orange Pi, etc so I started over and went through all that and still no joy. The HTML does not appear to be working using Firefox. I suspect it's something I have done or not done. Any ideas? I figured I should see something and I was wondering if there has been further developments with this project as a lot of the comments etc appear quite old. Thanks.

    At the very least, it seems effective for receive at this point. And, just shooting from the hip - maybe not having pip3 installed has something to do with the issues? I don't have any reason to think that's actually the problem just throwing it out there.

    • @loughkb
      @loughkb  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      RX and TX work fine from my laptop.
      You do have pip3 installed and working. It's used by the very next line to install a python module. pip is used for installing python things and has nothing to do with the actual software itself running.
      The issue seems to be with restarting the RX audio stream when switching back from TX.

    Can you not run this on a browser direct on the pi save some latency?

    • @loughkb
      @loughkb  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sure, but what would be the point? You'd be sitting right there at the radio where the pi is.
      The utility here is to sit in another room, out in your garden, on your porch, somewhere away from the radio with a laptop or tablet and use your radio.

    Well, as much as I really wanted to get this software operational, after a day and a half of trying, I have thrown my hands up in the air and given up. (I hate giving up by the way) I don't know if there are errors in the install scripts (or my install method) but the software just didn't boot up. A downloadable, working image file would be great. Next project, the KL remote mag loop controller. 73 VK3AWA

    I assume this only works with SDRs or rigs that function like SDRs. Older radios without USB and/or ethernet ports cannot connect to this device, or can they? Has anyone succeeded in connecting an RPi to a venerable old boat anchor like a Kenwood TS-830s (the only radio I own at the moment)? Hams are nothing if not the original makers of the world. It would not surprise me if someone out there has managed to update his old rig with a port for something like this. Anyone?

    • @loughkb
      @loughkb  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      As I mentioned in the video, you would need to use a signalink or something like my Duinovox to interface the pi to an older radio.

      @@sincerelyyours7538 They simply provide an interface for audio and control data between a radio and computer. Most often used for digital modes, but also required for the computer to relay audio and control of the radio across a network.

      If you don't have a CAT interface USB or serial port on your rig, it's not going to be easy to remote control it. One option that might help is connecting a cheap SDR receiver to the IF stage. This would at least give you some SDR features on RX. A while back I used a hybrid setup where I had a Flex-1500 connected to my PC as a receiver and an old Ten Tec Corsair II as transmitter. The AF output on my PC went to the line input on the Corsair. Though I still had to manually set the TX frequency and various other TX controls on the Corasair front panel, the set up did work. However, if you want a full transciever remote control setup, I suspect the easiest/cheapest option is either get an SDR type transciever or an older one with a CAT interface.

    Great stuff too bad is just for a Raspi. Would be nice if I could run a lot of this stuff on a cheap Chromebook. I am working to get HamPi running on an intel Chromebook with the latest RaspBIOS desktop. I did try the skywave Linux but it was too much trouble even after switching back to a more reasonable window manager.
