Glowworms in Motion - A Time-lapse of NZ's Glowworm Caves in 4K

  • A Time-lapse of New Zealand’s Glowworm caves as they have never been seen before. Filming this involved sleeping in caves for multiple days in complete darkness with just the sounds of the cave to keep us company (and the occasional eel). Read the full story of how we pulled this off on our blog: bit.ly/Glowworm...
    UPDATE: This video won New Zealand Geographic's 2015 Photographer of the Year award in the Time-lapse category
    About the Series:
    Living a Kiwi Life is about a Canadian couple (me and Jenna) who have lived in Canada all our lives and made the decision to move to New Zealand having never gone there before. We quit our jobs, sold our houses and cars and left everything we knew to explore an unknown.

    +Emma Bedard, I can’t reply to your comment directly because of your account settings. Thanks for the comments on our videos. As for getting around NZ the absolute best way is to have your own vehicle, campervans are ideal as there are lots of places to park in NZ. We’ve got some stuff about the best way to get around and some the various companies on our blog. A cheaper option is to get on and off the various buses that travel the more popular tourist tracks. I would recommend Rere Rockslide as the coolest attraction in all of NZ but it is out the way. Other seriously cool options are Sandboarding, Tongariro Crossing or Taranaki and Shotover Canyon Swing.

    I was here as a child (maybe 8 years old). I'm 52 now and still remember it vividly. When people ask me where to go / what to see in NZ I always recommend Waitomo. It's not something you see every day. We did the whole Cape Reinga to Stewart Island thing one year (my family lived there when I was a kid). I have relatives all over NZ but I haven't been back since 1973. This place is the one that had the greatest impact.

    • @debpatterson4645
      @debpatterson4645 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      One thing: when I was a kid and all this time, I've heard it pronounced (at the caves) like Why Toe Moe, but a couple of places I've heard Wait imo. Can you list the proper MAORI pronunciation? My dad (a kiwi) always said Why-toe-moe.

      I'm 35. Once, I did my own thinking independently of the past and thought of how I already looked ahaed at the future as a property of the past. Knowing that even later, I would see the same about now. So I stopped anticipating the future and was like "This is the environment now" and adapt to the one that's here now. My awareness of the next one is very nil but I know that just becaue it's as though it doesn't exist doen't mean it's truly never coming and when it does come, I will adapt to that one from scratch and look back at how I didn't even think the current one existed and already did what I wanted to do at the time. I don't care to bother with it. Some people when they're old enough, their brain adapts to think that way. Some of you young people have to work to create a future with it way of thinking and can't take it for granted. You might be making plans. You might not get around to it and then lose interest but feel like you already did what you wanted to do discovering the answer for yourself. To pull off long focused 10 day plans of getting jobs done such as organizing things, you have to have seeds in the process of preparing a plan on how to do later parts and start working on adjusting your mind far enough ahead or something like that. They are just seeds and are not meant to be used in their current form and are meant to undergo improvisation along the way.

    Hey question, did you use a slider for this? If so, which one? Also, would a video using a gimbal still look decent? I'm going here next year and don't have 60 hours to spend in a cave but want to at least capture some cool footage. Thx!

    • @Stokedforsaturday
      @Stokedforsaturday  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I used a dynamic perceptions stage one slider. If you go to the blog link in the description I list most of the gear used. You would a camera with very low light sensitivity to get a good result with video and a gimbal. Probably a sony a7sii or something similar. Even with that the results won't be that great but they should show up.

    Been to New Zealand recently and it was the best time of my life. Only thing was that they didn't allow any cameras including GoPro in the cave so wasn't able to get any pictures, surprised you got to camp inside for this amazing video!

      Yah, there are a bunch of different cave options and we got lucky with this one getting to camp in it

    I'm a bit curious, did you edit this video much to get the glow worms brightness that high, or are they actually that visible to the naked eye? Beautiful video though, something I'd love to see at some point in my life!

    • @Stokedforsaturday
      @Stokedforsaturday  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +kozy they are long exposure time-lapses which makes the images brighter. In person I would say they are as bright after your eyes adjust though.

    Beautiful work man!
    What length motion rigged slider did you use? Are their areas in the cave where the glow worms are not over water- i take it? What cave or area was this shot in? It wasn't shot on a tour group or anything like that was it? I'm very curious! haha

    • @Stokedforsaturday
      @Stokedforsaturday  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      both 4ft and 6ft lengths. Some areas are over water and other's aren't. I wrote two blogs about the two videos we made if you are interested in that:

    I agree with the campervan comment. Spent November 2004 touring the south Island. Hired a campervan and mobile phone from UK before flying out. Loads of sites all over. We used 'Top 10' Never had to book a site, but if you know where your going to be the next night, its worth phoning ahead if you want a parking area with a power point, only a few dollars more and worth it for the fridge, lights, radio without running the vans battery down.

    Hey Jordan. :) We're heading to NZ in 3 weeks and will be doing a Spellbound Tour on one of our first days. Just wondering if you think it's possible to get any decent footage-pics inside the Gloworm cave with either a GoPro 4 Silver or an old Canon DSLR. I'm guessing it's going to be difficult but what the hey will give it a go. Congrats again to you both on the announcement. Enjoy!

    • @Stokedforsaturday
      @Stokedforsaturday  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey, I'm excited for you. You'll have a great trip. You're unlikely to get a decent photo with either of those cameras. You would need a long exposure (30 seconds) on a tripod and you might get something decent depending on how close you were. The further way you are from the glowworms the longer the exposure needs to be. I've never been in the Spellbound cave but heard it was really good! Most tours don't allow tripods but if you do the Ruakuri Trail Walk at night you will see some glowworms along the trail/in caves that you can try and get some photos of with a tripod. Have fun!
